Datsyuk said he is not playing tonight after skating for "27 minutes and 37 seconds." not sure about Saturday in San jose

MacDonald starting in goal tonight for Wings. The plan was to not play Howard back to back coming off groin injury

Bertuzzi said he is playing tonight.

Very optional skate for Wings, as expected. Datsyuk, Bertuzzi, Kindl, Ericsson, Smith and goalies on the ice.

Not thrilled with sending Nyquist down. At the very least, he looks better than Emmerton.

Not a good update on Nicklas Lidstrom - he said he "felt worse" today, skated only a little bit, will shut it down for a couple of days.

You might be right that it is more than a bone bruise.

Lidstrom should go somewhere for a second opinion, or a more advanced scan if one exist, i don't believe it's just a bone bruise not a chance.

Bertuzzi back and Nyquist sent down doesn't even feel like an improvement for tonight's game. Cleary-Franzen-Bert line?

Bone bruises can take awhile. I've had one on my wrist, it took 2 weeks for the swelling to go completely down and 3 weeks for the pain to go away completely. And that was when I was 19, where you're made of magic and flesh. At 41 it can take longer than that.

Could be worse, Holmstrom could be playing in Franzen's spot.

Is anyone else concerned that if Lidstrom was considering returning for next year (I thought the probability of him returning around 80%) that his frustration level with this ankle injury could change his mind. He seems to be really irritated with the slow recovery and with it happening so close to the playoffs, he could feel why go through all of the offseason training and a long season just to be below 100% for the playoffs again. Doesn't make me feel good, that's for sure.

As for Lidström: I had a bone bruise in the akle last summer. The year before I had torn ligaments. And thought... well... bruise... how bad can that be. With the torn ligaments I could not walk properly for 2 weeks, did sports after 6 again.

The bone-bruise was so ******* painful and nagging that I did not walk AT ALL for FOUR weeks, used crutches for 5, been out of work for 6 and did not do sports for 9 weeks. Granted, I did not get the treatment and rehab a pro does. But judging from my own experience I would not expect him to miss less then 5 weeks. It simply hurts much, much more then torn ligaments and is more nagging. Sure, the origin was not being hit by something, but twisting the ankle in my case, so maybe that makes a bit of a difference. But still.... It is not a severe thing long term and I guess if it was playoffs he'd already play with a pain-hemming shot. But to really let it heal look for him to be out for another 2-3 weeks easily!

Problem is: It is MUCH worse then it sounds! you cannot compare it to a "normal" bruise in muscles or something. You have blood INTO the bone and that is damn painful. Main problem is: there is much less normal blood circulation in a bone then in a muscle. So the blood that spilled into can not be transported away quickly. That is why it lasts for ages. Very irritating. I had to wait for my MRT for weeks and thougt of the worst things. I was imagining torn ligaments all over. And when I heard "bone bruise" after not being able to walk a single step for 4 weeks I was like "wtf?! I am NOT simulating!!!" The doctor then explained to me that it is very often that way (longer term, very painful). So I feel a bit of relief that the "Iron-man" of the NHL seems to be in similar trouble then I was, thus proving that there was REALLY something

Honestly: No reason for long term-concern, but definately something that takes at least 4-6 weeks for a pro with all the medical help and rehab they have, if I shoud guess. It is very hard to imagine what that really is. I can tell you: Bone-bruise is MUCH worse then torn ligaments in the foot in terms of pain and time-frame. But it does not have the risk of instable foot and thus reinjuring. So a pain-shot should do if neccessary, I guess. So no risk for the playoffs....

Why are they still making Lidstrom walk around/excersize? Geez, Let him rest for a week like they thought maybe they should. He won't be able to play anyways, anything else is just making it take longer.

Nobody is 'making' him exercise. Lidstrom has a regimen that he performs daily. Without the ability to skate he probably feels like he has to do something in it's place. He's working on his own.

I doubt Lidstrom is doing everything "on his own." If he's working out on a bike or whatever, it's because he's been told it's not going to make it worse, and he has to keep in shape somehow while he's out. It sounds like it's just as much about pain management as it is about the thing healing and Lids being 100%, though, and him getting on the ice was probably them seeing if he's close to being able to play on it, because he may not be 100% when the playoffs roll around and they need to know at what point he can go.

Lets not forget generally speaking, the body of a 42-year-old is not likely to heal as quickly as the body of a 22-year-old. I'm grateful that this happened when it did, rather than in the playoffs. The Wings may not currently be holding the President's Trophy, but the prognosis for this season is still optimistic. I believe in this team.
