My apologies, move over MLK, Sean Avery is here to assure racial equality.
Hey, if you're going to crucify a guy over comments that may not have even taken place, you might as well get the alleged facts correct.
I still laugh at the topic regarding Avery's party and the cops showing up. The first topic was "Oh, what a bad guy. How dare he have a party! And he hit a cop!", 10+ pages of that. Then the facts came out, it was revealed nothing happened, certainly no assault, and that topic got...maybe 2 pages.
Fans love to think the worst of him, based off his on-ice personality. He's a ***** on the ice, and he crosses the line there often, no one will deny that. But off-the-ice, he's a genuinely nice guy.
Exactly, and he did it well. Ironically a lot of the players people hate on the ice, people have pretty nice things to say about them off of the ice. It's usually the big stars that you hear the bad stories about.
Avery says some dumb things, for sure, for attention and probably because he's not exactly a genius, and also in order to create an on-ice image that he'll continue to sell for years probably. But off the ice he's quite well spoken and has stuck his neck out for some pretty serious issues and charities. Ironically a lot of the people he's seems to have pissed off throughout the league or have had big spats have probably done worse. I mean, didn't Martin Brodeur have an affair with his sister in-law? What a gentleman.

He was in the community in a couple of the cities in which he played. In at least one of them I don't think the consensus was that he was a genuinely nice guy.
Sean Avery's hockey career appears to be at an end. Or is it?
A week after being told he was no longer in the New York Rangers' plans, Avery told Bravo TV that he is calling it quits while appearing as a guest on "Watch What Happens Live" with socialite Nicole Richie.
"I am officially retired," he said. "I threw my skates in the Hudson [River]."
While it wasn't immediately clear whether he was kidding, Larry Brooks of the New York Post later tweeted that Avery was in fact serious.
"No, that wasn't a joke," Avery told Brooks. "Yes I'm retiring at end of season and it's okay."
However, Avery's agent Pat Morris has denied the reports, saying Avery was joking and has no desire to retire. Morris also said Avery's future plans will be determined by interest this summer or early next season.
in the end it was brooks reporting it. give me a break the guy doesn't know anything
He was an effective agitator. He knew his role on the team and embraced it. I don't see why that's so frowned upon by so many fans, especially considering the majority of the teams have a player in a similar role.
When he did his job, and he threw an opposing team off their game, there were very few better.
He threw himself off the game. He agitated oponents by taking stupid penalty at the worst times possible. Liability that tried to make a joke out of the NHL. That doesn't even include how much of a how he hurts the team in the lockerroom and off-ice. Holland said it the best, he doesn't respect the game.
Fans love to think the worst of him, based off his on-ice personality. He's a ***** on the ice, and he crosses the line there often, no one will deny that. But off-the-ice, he's a genuinely nice guy.
A genuinely nice guy who makes fun of his teammates?
And all the time he spent toiling in the AHL, before being cut, and complete lack of desire of any NHL GM to have him for free on waivers, proves that he did not in fact do a great job, or even a good job.
That said, he was a character, and we don't have enough of them.
His numbers and effectiveness prove otherwise. Chris Chelios finished toiling in the AHL. Guess his whole career was awful, amirite?

Yeah, Adam Oates and Jeremy Roenick were awful as well. Pat Lafontaine? Scrub. Peter Stastny, Marcel Dionne? Awful players, they never even won a cup!
God, he's got you so rattled you that you come up with these reasons to diminish his career that you insult some of the best players to ever play
Some of the stuff he has done has been pretty funny, I didn't like him but he was one of those guys I loved to hate. I wouldn't mind seeing him in the NHL again but I don't know if that's very likely anymore.
As for his off ice personality I don't know the guy so I am not going to make assumptions about that, he was not really a dirty player (Just an agitator) and I don't have a burning hate for him like some of you guys seem to.
... and I'm one who was totally taken in by the whole Avery thing when he first came to Broadway and when he came back... and back again this season... again.
He's an effective player, but this? What is this? I don't even
I have a hard time with the fact that fans of the game don't understand why the sloppy seconds comment was the most out of line thing you can say as a professional player.
it is just baffling that people don't understand it and think it is funny.
Edit: actually there are probably worse things you could say but this one is up there.

I like how everyone else ignored your post.
I agree. I honestly don't see how people can argue Avery's childish antics were worse then Brodeur having an affair with his sister-in-law. It's laughable.

Apparently a few vulgar comments and you are the #1 most wanted. Yes, it wasn't funny. But at the same time everyone making him out to be a villain is even more baffling.
