The Business of HockeyDiscuss the financial and business aspects of the NHL. Franchise sales, valuations, TV contracts, ratings, expansion, relocation, the CBA and work stoppage discussion goes here.
i love watching the difference between Winnipeg and Quebec....it says so much about our respective cities.
in winnipeg nobody believed it would happen (except for a few in the know) until the second the words came out of mark chipman's mouth....there was always doubt and disbelief and it was approached with nothing but trepidation in fear of getting our hopes up....even those in the know were nervous that it would be snatched away at the last second.
the people of quebec have no doubt in their minds whatsoever...they have believed for years that it not only should happen but will happen......their confidence is enviable.....we believed we were not good enough, quebecers believe that the NHL owes them....selling tickets years in advance, travelling to away games en masse in a grand display.....that would never have happened in winnipeg.
in quebec they are already talking about who the coach will be and their meter is boldly predicting an imminent conclusion...in winnipeg our meter didnt go to 100% until 3 days after it happened, just in case bettman changed his mind.
i admire the quebecers for their confidence....i will be in the stands for sure when the jets play their first game there....wearing my WHA willy lindstrom jersey.
That's because I think in Quebec everything happened so fast with the arena, with the possible new owner creating a sport network out of thin air, there's always stuff coming in to keep the hope alive. Quebecor are not stupid and they created a big sport channel just to get the Nords game. It's hard to not see this leading to a NHL return in Quebec.

This post is in vain. Had the shoes been on the other foot and QC got a team first, there would have been doubt and fear of Bettman changing his mind in QCers as well. Then should Winnipeg have been second, there would have been much less negativity and more optimism after QC would have paved the way.
So really, just flip the cities around in your post and the situation stays the same.

in vain??...odd choice of words
you could be right...im sure it helps that winnipeg blazed the trail in their eyes.
if i recall though even before the jets return there was significant optimism in quebec...remember the flood of quebecers in new york and such.....i think it is more about the historic confidence of each city in general.....i dont think winnipeg would be as confident as they are in quebec had the situation been flipped.
personally, i would be more worried being second...only because GB so clearly would rather eat glass than have more teams in canada...two in two years might kill him.

I dislike him as much as the next guy, but I think this is overblown. He's already gone on record as saying the league wants to right some wrongs and get back into some markets that have lost teams. And as much as he probably doesn't want to leave Phoenix, he wants the league making money even more. And the league would do that in Quebec.
With the Jets return, TNSE refused to keep the old logo and any uniform remotely similar to their old ones. Rumor has it, they only settled on the "Jets" name because the fans forced their hand on that one.
What are the chances that Quebecor goes with the Nords name and a logo the same as, or similar to, the old one? It would be a brilliant marketing ploy to do so, especially for the Nords, and especially in Quebec, where heritage and loyalty seem to be so much more important to people than it is in other parts of the country.
If the potential owners in Quebec City want a team badly enough to build an arena now, imagine how badly they will want it after their arena is under construction – or when it is built and sitting empty. Imagine what they will pay for a team then. Imagine the leverage the NHL would have … well, assuming the league doesn't have another team to relocate.

I don't live in Quebec, but like in Winnipeg there can only be one name!

(I don't have a problem with your characterization of Quebec City and Winnipeg, and it was well-intentioned and nicely put anyway.)
Regarding your last point, certainly Bettman and most of the governors would rather have a viable team in Phoenix or another U.S. market such like Seattle or Kansas City. Nevertheless, as Elliotte Friedman alluded to on CBC radio yesterday (linked to either in this thread or the Phoenix thread), the roaring success of Winnipeg will have served to mitigate the reluctance that many US-based governors would have had to relocating a troubled franchise to Canada.

Pretty much 100 percent, as PKP has already said he wants to keep the name and logo.

If they do use the Nords name, let's hope they don't use the Wolf logo.

Don't worry. PKP has been seen wearing the old Igloo logo on numerous occasions. I would be VERY surprised if he decided to use another name and another logo. If he buys a team, the Nords will be back.

The original logo would be fantastic, but at the very least there will be a new jersey.
Winnipeg must have sold 100,000+ jerseys this year. All that money never would have rolled in if there wasn't something new that everyone suddenly felt they had to have.
I had two old Jets jerseys, but I emptied my pockets to the tune of over $500 in order to get the new home and away this year. I wouldn't have needed to do that if they had kept an older design.

I know it's anecdotal (and wouldn't nearly balance things out :-D ), but I probably would have bought a Jets jersey if they'd gone with an older logo.
Although... can you still gets Jets jerseys with the older logos? I have t-shirts with both the new and the old, and I only wear the old one.
True North put a stop to production of merchandise with the old logo on it. Makes good business sense, especially if they go to a retro third as Mark Chipman has suggested.
If the Nords came back, and played in the old jersies in the old barn, I think the nostalgia might just become overwhelming for some of the fans. Nothing quite like experiencing something you thought was gone forever - I know, I did it this past October, but I at least had the newness of the building and uniform to keep at least one of my feet firmly in the present.
I want the wolf logo for the Nordiques, don't forget that the original jersey was the worst seller across the league, because it so 80s and outdated. Maybe they can adjust the wolf logo a little bit, but i'm sure it can be a good seller. The Nordiques will be old logo are in Colorado, this is a new era, so a new logo , like they did for the JEts.
