I can make similar arguments for both the teams and coaching staffs under Williams, Mularkey and Jauron. You think Gailey will be here for 2013 if he has another losing season?
I like Nix, but the coaching staff is far from anything but average.
Jauron's tenure was marked by statistical stagnancy regardless of what the eye test proclaimed, and Mularkey took them to a 9-7 season and was run out of town too quickly IMO. I can't speak for Williams. And how is next year relevant to your argument? Good, bad, and average coaches all get fired.

To be fair, Mularkey stepped down, but that's besides the point.
This could be the most optimistic Bills thread ever. Perhaps the start of a new era! Ok...I'll chillax. I'm just very excited about that pass rush if Williams signs.

Williams set the franchise back years with his gigantic ego. The Bills had a top 5 defense when he took over. He dismantled it because the Titans were #1 under him and he wanted to recreate that instead of working with what he had. People say "he took a 3-13 team and got them to .500!", but what they forget to say is he made them a 3-13 team in the first place from what was a playoff calibur team under Phillips.
Mularkey came in advertising smash mouth football. Instead we got RB throwing the football on 3rd and 1.
DJ had a worse grasp of clock management than most 14 year olds playing Madden online.
I can't think of a single time that I've really been scratching my head over any coaching decisions that Uncle Chan has made. That in and of itself is an improvement.
Damn, Gaither is off the table at LT. Chargers re-sign him.
I hope they get Levi Brown or Marcus McNeill to visit. Not sure how I feel about either of them (McNeill solely because of injuries), but they should do some due diligence.

Chan def had some moments last year that left me scratching my head. I can't recall and specific plays, but I know I complained in these threads a few times about it.

Then you must've blacked out on some of the games from last season. Chan most definitely made some Jauron-esque decisions.

Either that or take a franchise LT with our 1st if at all possible. However, now that Meachem's out of the question, I wouldn't be opposed to drafting the best WR in the draft at #10 if he fell to us, which I believe is a very good possibility based on the reports I've read.
Bottom line is this - landing or not landing Mario Williams will be a huge determinant of how we draft. Of course there are plan B's, C's, etc. but getting him or not getting him can completely change our options. Assume we do get him, I'd be all aboard drafting a stud WR or a franchise tackle. There's always the outside possibility we go pass rush regardless, but I believe if we get Mario, that won't be taken care of until the 2nd or 3rd rounds.
Other free agents that have been quiet so far that I would like the Bills to take a look at are Dallas Clark and Gary Brackett. However, Clark might be waiting on Manning.
Levi Brown is awful, he almost single handedly got Kolb killed last year. no way do i want that guy here. i'd rather find a journeyman/draft an LT at 10 than go forward with him IMO
Kyle Orton signed with the Cowboys. Kind of a head-scratcher for me there; I thought he'd be looking to try for a starting job somewhere but he got three years and probably good money to be Romo's backup.

Orton signs to be Romo's backup, Campbell signs to be Cutler's backup...
I don't get it. Wouldn't they be better off signing somewhere where they can compete for a starting job--or at least behind a weak starter?

One thing I forgot to mention about McNeill -- Nix knows him from San Diego.
As for Clark, don't think we'd offer up the money on a TE2...but we do need one. I'd prefer a good run blocking TE, but hey, if we can run a poor man's Gronk/Hernandez with Chandler/??? then that works too.

That's what I was thinking too. Campbell especially last year didn't want to be a backup, then settles for being one now. The money must have been right for these two. There were still QB-weak destinations (SEA, CLE, MIA off the top of my head) that they could have had a chance to start for, barring no one else better being given the chance first (Flynn for example).

Three teams having early conversations with Giants free-agent WR Mario Manningham: SF, MIA, BUF.
Super Mario's priority #1 for me. If we end up with Manningham in addition to Williams, as long as we don't overpay severely, I might be alright with it.
Right now though, I say focus on Williams above all.

Yeah, but you can't focus on Williams exclusively. If he takes a week to decide what he wants to do, they're going to miss out on most of the other free agents event worth talking to.

Martellus Bennett, Kevin Boss, Leonard Pope, John Carlson, Joel Dreessen, Bo Scaife, Jeremy Shockey, and Visanthe Shiancoe are all free agents.

Carlson is off the market. I think Boss would be worth a look. Maybe Bennett but I don't know enough about him.
If Nix and Gailey really want Manningham I would be ok and give him a chance, but if they're just signing him because they feel the need to spend money then I would be upset. I'm glad they are finally putting some money into the team but I just don't see him being that much of an upgrade over Jones and Nelson.
