What do teams do with tossed hats?

Donate them to charity? Ship them to an impoverished nation? Trashed? Recycle?

I believe that is the case, they are given to a charity, I think some teams allow the player who scored it to pick the charity.

I think there actually is a lost and found situation in a lot of cases for fans willing to wait a while after the game.

At the Wells Fargo Center, they are displayed in the main concourse area under which hattrick the hat was thrown.

Columbus keeps them behind glass. Also some players keep them or take a few they like and save it.
