To wind up with 82 points and a average a point a game for a whole season. Do you guys think he can do it ? He's been on one of his hot streaks 4-2-6 over his last 3 games, can he keep up this pace or something similar over the next 12 games ?
I never wanna doubt what JT can do, BUT, he has some really difficult games left against teams fighting for playoff position, or even just to make the playoffs. And those teams pretty much know, shut down Tavares, and you shut down the Isles.
Two part question, do you think he will do it, AND, does it really matter ? Does averaging a point a game put you in the "elite" class of the NHL ?
Yes, I think he can do it even though we do have a tough schedule...
Do I want him to... not really I'd rather him take the rest of the season off so we can improve our draft pick lol. Of course I know that's not realistic but I wish it was the case...
i dont care if he does it or not. i just thank jeebus hes on the team and is committed to it.
I ask myself all the time how/why on Earth he has so much faith in this team lol... I'm thinking they made a side deal where if he ever needs an organ transplant Garth will donate one to him
Like in bad defense?
He is a 0 +/- for the season.
I think he means Tavares always goes up to a ref and says look I didn't touch that puck that's moulsons goal or whoever. Hes done that like 3-4 times in his career.
It would be nice if he would stop giving points away.
no kidding. He's got such a great attitude about the game and his team.
TSN had a "top players in sports, under 23" and...
1) Stamkos
2) Rory McElroy
3) "Marginally Talented" John Tavares
-----
This morning on TSN radio there was a question of "who would you start a franchise with?" Crosby, Stamkos, Other......and "John Tavares" got some votes.
-----
People are starting to take notice of this player.
He's among the best in the NHL at making those around him better and he's improved dramatically since he was drafted.
I think the 82pts would be "nice" - but completely unnecessary.
This is a franchise player (he just needs an actual franchise now)

Yup. JT is a very unselfish player. He probably wanted to make sure MM got his 30th goal of the season. He did this last year too with PA. He kept trying to set him up late in the year so he got to 20 goals on the season even though it may have cost him getting to 30 goals himself. This kid is going to be a great team captain some day.

LOL either that or they throw money to him under the table tax free
I believe JT is a warrior and he is very loyal. He is a rare breed of talent that see's a low team struggling and figures I can make this MY team and win a championship and me immortalized as opposed to being traded to the Red Wings or Flyers and winning it there

Link? I would like to read this.
Regarding the OP, I don't see why that can't be done or possibly better. One thing about JT is it seems like anything is possible with that guy. I really do believe there is no limit to his upside. But he could put up 3 points in the remaining games and wouldn't change my opinion about him. I still hope he can do it though. The higher he sets the bar for himself, I think the harder he tries to do better. That is a scary thought if he finished the season with 82 points. That would make next season fun to watch for that alone.

Wasn't it ESPN where that brilliant quote came from?
edit: oh wait, maybe you are just adding in the ESPN quote to the TSN comment, sorry.
Yes, he can reach the 82-point mark. However, he will not. My personal opinion is that he will finish just shy of 82 points, probably in the high 70's.
No, it does not matter if he reaches 82 points are falls just shy. To us, as Islanders fans, we know what he is capable of, we know how important he is, and we know that he can eventually surpass the PPG benchmark. I say benchmark because I think it is the barrier where a player is commonly known as "elite". However, Tavares has already become widely recognized as one of the elite players in the league. Whether he finishes with 82 points or 78 points really does not matter in the end.
This ! Imagine if he had St Louis or Lecavalier passing to him on the powerplay. Definetly would have at least 10 more goals at this point. No offense to Parenteau who is the first Islander to have 45+ assists since 1996 I believe. But St Louis is an elite player, and Lecavalier isn't far behind. I still believe Stamkos would score at least 40 goals on THIS Islander's team if he was here instead of Tavares. Stamkos is great. Not saying he is a better player than Tavares, just saying Tavares is a better playmaker than Stamkos, and Stamkos is a better goal scorer.
