Well, the good news for us is, they can't make him get back on the plane. If he wants to stay in the NHL, he can.
Right, but once he burns his final year owed to Nashville his only active contract is going to be a KHL contract. Under the Radulov Rule... err... transfer agreement between the NHL and KHL he likely would not be allowed to sign a new deal until he satisfies his contractual obligations in Russia.
I'll still take him for the play off run. It'd be nice to lock him up long term, but I really wasn't expecting it. Move forward, sign both Kostitsyn's, and hope Rads helps the team go deep enough in the play offs to convince Suter and Weber to ink new deals.
Medvedev is the KHL commissioner and also a primary figure (owner maybe?) and active in the management of the CSKA Moscow club. Unlike MLB where Bud Selig had to put his interest in the Brewers into a trust and transfer control to his daughter, Medvedev here is control of the league and it's rules and also his club.
FWIW, Radulov's 2012-13 KHL contract is rumored to be worth $5 million. He can buy it out for 2/3rds of the value or $3,330,000. I know that the Preds and Radulov's NA agent Jay Grossman have discussed an extension on a couple of occasions already and know the ballpark of where each is willing to go. I don't believe the Preds allow him to burn the final year of his ELC and/or leave Nashville at the end of the season without having reached a clear understanding of whether he's intending to re-sign here or head back.
For now though, we are getting back a dynamic asset that the franchise has been without for nearly 4 years at a time when we can really use his services. I'm willing to trust that Poile has weighed the options and knows what he is doing here. I know he has done his homework and I'm going to put my trust in that and enjoy the on-ice product the next few months. I'm not asking anyone else to do that, all I'm saying is that's how I'm looking at it...

Ok, true. Unless he signs an extension with Nashville.

I just don't see why he would stay here... why would be buy out his khl deal?
looking out for number one, why would a 25 year old re-sign in the nhl this summer when he could go back, make tax free income, and play in the olympics in russia.... and then come back to the nhl as a 27 year old?
It looks like radulov is finally going to have to fish or cut bait.
if he wants to play in the NHL for an extended peeriod of time, he can negotiate a contract extension, with a signing bonus big enough to cover his buyout, and just stay here....
if he wants to play in the KHL then he plays the playoffs for us, and goes home, presumably free to sign with Medvedev's club now that his KHL contact is bought out.
I doubt seriously if he goes back to Russia for one year then returns here again, even if he would qualify as a UFA under what will be the new CBA

Medvedev is the president of SKA St. Petersburg. Him and the league are very shady in many ways and I certainly would not take anything they say too literally.
Nothing new here. Same stuff , just the view from the side. Just apply the buyout required amount into his sign up bonus.
Unless Medvedev gonna hostage his parents, he is free to do what ever he wants.
watching as an outsider whose team isn't effected by this issue.... But glad you guys are gettin him back
wasn't it said by Rads agent that he could sign in the NHL next season or something like that to the effect of UFA still holding onto his rights in the KHL but him being free to return to the NHL and if he chooses to return to the KHL next season or if there is a lockout then UFA still holds his rights IF he returns to the KHL.....
Why is this so confusing... I mean it seems each side is saying something different.... did maybe the KHL commish mean if Rads returns to the KHL
oh it even gets better.... when is the date for this? is it in a month or so.
" said Medvedev.
"Radulov's departure turned out to be civilized. It's not a coincidence on Monday Alexander and his agent flew to Ufa. And the fact that he will play in the NHL… We will hope that Nashville, even stronger with the Kostitsyn brothers and Radulov, won't last long in the Stanley Cup, and Alexander gets free in time for the Russian National team."
It sounds less dire when in full context. Medvedev basically lays out what he hopes happens...including, in no uncertain terms, that he hopes our playoff run is short.
Now...the part where even he speculates that Radulov would love to use this as a springboard to a UFA bidding war is a little troubling, since that really doesn't concern him...
I think its safest for our sanity to assume nothing more than rads being present for this years playoffs.
and if you notice a few pages back I siad the tinfoil hat view of this would be that he comes back, burns his ELC, tanks the playoffs, and is available for Russia at the WC's... and now we hear that Medvedev has voiced that very thought

That's fine. At the first sign of not performing, he can sit the bench.

lol......he'll just go back to Russia....he only needs one game to fulfill the contract.
The way I see it, Rads coming back, even if for just a few games and the p/o's this year, brings everything full circle. He finally fulfills the remainder of his contract, at least in some fashion, and we finally get to at least have him for some stretch of the season up until the very end. After that, if he has no other contract except with the KHL, so be it. What's done will be done and he can do what he wants after that. If he comes back after reaching UFA status and signs with X team then that will be perfectly fine with me. Point being he gets his obligation over with, hopefully plays very well for us, and after that it is all in his hands as it should be. We should be happy we get him back for this year and let what happens in the summer come and worry about it then.

If he leaves without team permission he gets suspended again and deemed a defective player. There would be yet another set of hoops for him to jump through to become a free agent in the NHL.
If he does phone it in during the p/o's I seriously hope the entire team gathers around to beat his ass before hopping on the next plane to Moscow, however. As long as he's ours he better damn well play.
