Heh, just watched the video and Tommy's serious face is pretty funny.
The name,"Tommy Wingels" and, "serious face" don't sound like they should ever go together, so we should be glad with whatever product we get from him.
His personality is so different from what I perceived it to be by just looking at his roster photo. I don't see him smile much at all on the ice or bench. He's all business, just like he is in this video.

Agreed. His face makes you think he's a big goofball (in a good way), but when he puts his business socks on, he doesn't mess around lol.
Great for Wingels nice to see more players be brave and have an actual backbone.
He must of had lots of sensitivity training.

As stated above, he was playing at Miami U when Brendan Burke "came out" to the hockey team. (Brendan stopped playing hockey, but stayed in hockey as "management".)
I think a lot of players would be willing to support this. I think excluding Wingels and Miele, they wanted to get "icons"/very popular players to do the promos (at least initially).
I would not be surprised to see more players participate going forward.
Besides, any prejudice is divisive in a lockerroom.

There is a lot of truth to that bolded section, LS
I think you're also right about them putting the "faces of the NHL" on first. It's a very smart move and would only serve to encourage others to step forward.
My knowledge of openly gay athletes is admittedly small. All I can come up with off the top of my head is: Martina Navratilova, Greg Louganis and Billie Jean King. All greats in their sports. Greg even brought the USA nice, shiny Olympic gold (4, to be exact).
I don't care what lifestyle you live, if you can get us some gold, get out there and play dammit! The Chinese are kicking our butts at the summer games
Wingels is a great player, and a great person as well. I hope the You Can Play project does progress sports to be more accepting, and I hope we see openly gay athletes.
Wingels is awesome on so many levels. It's nice to have players who are quality on the ice; it's even better when those players are even more quality off of it.
Even despite the struggles this season and a potential rebuild, Wingels is a big part of why the Sharks future isn't looking completely miserable.
I watched this rugby player on the Ellen show a year ago who was apparently the ONLY PRO ATHLETE to ever come out WHILE being an active player. I mean that's crazy and sad how he's the ONLY one to do so. He also said that he knew loads of players that were gay, but obviously, still in the closet. I'm pretty sure a good hunk of pro athletes in America are in the closet. And that sucks how they are too afraid to come (can't blame them) because of the backlash they'll receive from homophobes in the sports world. Really, really sucks.
And great video by Wingels. Loved him ever since he got called up, but respect him a whole lot now.
During the Boston game Wingels (of all people) was leaving the ice and one of the Boston players punched him as he was trying to get on the bench. A man behind me said "I hate it when <insert slur for gays> pull that kind of crap." I was speechless. I should have send something. Lesson learned.

What I wonder is why there hasn't been any notable retired athletes that come out. It's almost certain that there have been some gay star athletes that are retired. It's pretty hard to come out during your career because that could have a negative effect on you and your team. But I'm surprised nobody has shown the leadership to admit who they are after their career is over.

Great video mao2meow.
A lot of people use that 3 letter "f word" not meaning it literally, though.

Yeah, a lot of people use the 3 letter "g" and "f" words as general derogatory comments, but they honestly aren't using it literally. That doesn't make it okay though. It's not full blown homophobia in that sense, but it's still not right. Even though I've always supported equality, I sometimes used the "g" word in a derogatory manner back in middle school. I quickly realized how wrong it was for me to use the word that way and stopped.

That's great! If only everyone thought the same way!
I know a lot of people say the 3 letter slurs casually, heck I've done it! A year ago I took the "It Gets Better" pledge and have stopped using those slurs & I also tell people that I am around that I won't put up with others using it around me.
I just want to be more sensitive, even when someone who says it isn't homophobic & is using the words to describe something stupid, it's still insulting.
