I've made up my mind on Gilroy. Excellent skater, decent shot, good passer, but ZERO hockey sense.
For a guy that skates as well as he does, he provides zero offense in the offensive zone.
Don't mind him as a 7 guy, but not a top 6er...
Give him a full camp and some time within the team system, it doesn't happen over night. All of the tallent is obvious and he does a lot of things well but with time he could be the #5, 6 RH shot the Sens need.
He's high risk and low reward so far. He often plays deep in the o-zone which would be great if it led to goals but it doesn't. Too often one of the forwards has to play his position for him on the counter attacks.
That said, if he signs cheap I might keep him for 1 more year as a depth guy. Maybe he'll get lucky and start to cash in on his chances. The only other right side D that are ready to play are Carkner and Gryba but I'd sure want to see what other ufa is available before finally deciding on Gilroy

I will admit he can skate better than I originally thought. That being said, his shot never seems to be a threat, he is an adequate passer at best, and I completely agree he almost always makes the wrong read. That was my big issue from the getgo. He jumps into the rush, all the time, even when it doesn't make sense. The one or two times it works he is 12 feet away from the net and he makes a high risk pass. Can't hit the open net, either.
He belongs in Europe, in my opinion. Harsh, but I can't possibly justify that game in the NHL.
Everybody planned on making Gilroy into the new whipping boy and that's exactly what's happening. Everybody is way too critical and over-analysing his play. The Plekanec goal was a beauty of a shot and if Spezza or Karlsson had done that one on one vs. anybody we'd all be creaming our panties in excitement. Whatever, I guess people need something to complain about.
Not even close. Kuba was beyond horrific. A liability every time he was on the ice. I can NOT believe how much he just changed his game around. I swear to God I think someone transformed him or something. Unbelievable.
Gilroy is much more capable offensively and defensively. I just believe there are better options like Borowiecki.
I don't think he's been perfect offensively or defensively, but watching the game today, I did appreciate that he was getting some good opportunities. You've gotta think they'll probably go in eventually. Now he does scare me defensively sometimes but I don't think he's been all that bad from the times I've noticed him play.

I really dont think they will... He has a career high of 4 goals...and 15 points(Im not counting this season because apparently 2nd assists dont count, and passing to Stamkos inflates your #'s too much to use as evidence)
For all the pinches and for how much he joins the rush and actually does something(get a shot or complete a pass)... I dont see us being any better with Gilroy in the lineup... We lost one of our better defensive Dmen for a rover who isnt nearly as good in his own end and I would say maybe marginally better in the O zone...

Lee was the whipping boy, regardless of what he did people just crapped on him, even though he was doing well in his role. Gilroy makes mistakes of judgement often, so people pointing this out aren't making him a whipping boy.
While Plekanec made a great shot, Gilroy had no business jumping on a fake to the outside, ever. Plekanec was alone, had no support, if he wants to go outside and have no angle to shoot from, let him go. It was a terrible defensive play IMO.
Gilroy needs lots of work defensively, but he does have offensive upside, just isn't showing yet.
As mistake prone as Gilroy has been at times, I am still happier with him in the lineup over Carkner.
Gilroy isn't nearly as poor defensively as some are making him out to be. It's his lack of offensive production to me that is more concerning for a guy that is supposed to produce.
