I think because some other teams were offering Hossa alot more to sign with them. He took a lower priced contract with Detroit because he thought they had the best chance for the Cup.

I know Lidstrom has taken two pay cuts since 2001 to allow the Wings to sign more players. 2002 comes to mind when Nick, Yzerman, Fedorov and Shanny all took cuts to sign Robitaille, Hasek and Hull.

But Lidstrom has also signed contracts before free agency and signed for reasonable cap hits. Holland and the Wings have said that they wanted to pay him what he was worth, and until three years ago he was the highest paid defenseman I believe. (At least top three)

I don't consider Hossa signing with the Wings a discount. He was making the same as Lidstrom, had a great year and cashed in big the next year. What was he making in '06-'07?

I have a feeling that's gonna change soon. They will need to sign some players that they need and won't be able to afford to pass on a player because the price is too high. THey will pay up in the next two years.
