2011-2012 Magic Number Deluxe thread!

Figured I'd start one up since we are getting relatively *close* to clinching a playoff spot and will soon start to eliminate teams from our perspective. And this is deluxe because I'm considering more than just the standard magic number, see the tables below!

NOTE: Unless tiebreaker is decided (see below), assuming Devils lose the tiebreaker and would need 1 more point to clinch. Once we eliminate a team, I'm no longer going to keep track of their place in the standings or the tiebreaker information with them!

Updated through Saturday's games

Playoffs have been clinched

Current playoff seed: 6th
Current 1st round matchup: Florida Panthers

Current highest possible finish in conference: 5th
Current lowest possible finish in conference: 7th

Current standings:
1) x- NY Rangers
2) x- Boston Bruins
3) Florida Panthers: 91 points, 3 GR, 31 ROW (max: 97, 34 ROW)
4) x- Pittsburgh Penguins
5) x- Philadelphia Flyers: 101 points, 3 GR, 42 ROW (max: 107, 45 ROW)
6) x- NJ Devils: 96 points, 3 GR, 33 ROW (max: 102, 36 ROW)
7) x- Ottawa Senators: 92 points, 3 GR, 35 ROW (max: 98, 38 ROW)
8) Washington Capitals
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9) Buffalo Sabres
10) Winnipeg Jets
11) Tampa Bay Lightning
12) Carolina Hurricanes
13) Toronto Maple Leafs
14) NY Islanders
15) Montreal Canadiens

Eliminated teams (teams that cannot catch us):
Montreal Canadiens (eliminated 3/20)
Toronto Maple Leafs (eliminated 3/20)
NY Islanders (eliminated 3/23)
Carolina Hurricanes (eliminated 3/23)
Winnipeg Jets (eliminated 3/27)
Tampa Bay Lightning (eliminated 3/27)
Washington Capitals (eliminated 3/31)
Buffalo Sabres (eliminated 3/31)

Upcoming eliminations (within one to two games):
Ottawa Senators: 3 NJD points or 3 points lost by Senators

Points needed to clinch playoff seed..
8th: clinched
7th: clinched

6th: 3 points

Points away from being eliminated from playoff seed...
Eliminated from Atlantic Division race and top 3 seeds
Eliminated from 4th seed
5th: 1 points

Points needed to be gained to control our own destiny against...
Flyers (5th): 6 points

Tiebreakers by team:

Italics = tiebreakers decided already
Underlined = secondary tiebreaker decided already, only considering head to head for now unless it's tied

Flyers: Lost (Devils can only tie in ROW, Flyers won season series)

Panthers: Undecided (Panthers own the secondary tiebreaker)
Senators: Undecided (Devils currently ahead by 2 points in the head to head with 1 game remaining)

TOO EARLY!

Haha I'll feel a lot better discussing this when we hit 90 points.

That, and when Buffalo will GTFO.

Every team lower than 10th is all but officially eliminated in the East.

Buffalo, and Winnipeg can still make it.

Washington has a tough schedule on the road this week with Chicago tonight, Detroit, and Philly.

We don't play any of those teams again, and can't knock them out ourselves.

Though we did win the season series over all of them.

We are 5.5 games ahead of Buffalo with 10 left. If they catch us we aren't doing damage in the playoffs anyway

Winnipeg is only on pace for 88 points, so realistically if we crack 90 points we'll be in for sure. Anything can happen, so we need to win as many games as possible, but I'm not worried.

For the love of God, Buffalo isn't making the playoffs.

You're right, but a lot of people don't understand why I am legitimately concerned.

When there are games like yesterday quite often when the Devils don't show up it's hard to have a lot of faith in this team. It's one blunder that hasn't slowed down or gone away.

It could be Winnipeg too. Not just Buffalo.

I know the chances are low, but I wouldn't put anything past it.

The Devils have approximately 0% chance of missing the playoffs. That's why nobody "understands why you're legitimately concerned."

I think they will make the playoffs.

The question is will it be 8th seed? Or 6th?

They gotta start showing up more though.

The ROW tiebreaker thing is in the back of my mind at times too. Though if we get to 95 points there is no doubt in my mind it will factor. 93 points, and it probably won't make no difference. Would make me more comfortable.

Every point that we get, and every point the Jets fail to get, gets subtracted from the magic number.

I kinda like the Jets. Devils above all though.

I know you're a Buffalo guy yourself.

The Devils have no chance of missing the playoffs. It's all about the seeding at this point.

Started this thread because we are on the verge of eliminating our first team, so not too early

Added two new lines representing our highest and lowest possible finishes at the current time.

Will update the rest tonight and throw in tiebreakers, etc.

Even seeding isn't going to change that much. We're probably like 65-70% to take 6th and 15% for each of 5th and 7th.

Lot of games between all the teams. We have two against Ottawa, one against Pitt. Ottawa also has one against Pitt, one against Philly and one against 'Peg, Philly has one against Wash, one against Florida, and two against Pitt, etc. It's going to cut down on movement pretty heavily and our actual clinch is going to come much earlier than you'd expect.

Love seeing this thread instead of our lottery odds. I'll enjoy watching these numbers tick lower and lower.

I think we end up 6 or 7. More likely 6th as 4th and 5th seem to be getting out of reach.

Oh no Carolina wins now! What are we gonna do? Forget Buffalo! Now I'm worried about Carolina! What if they catch us!?

Just kidding just kidding.

Trying to poke fun at myself.

Although it would be funny if Carolina somehow grabbed 8th place.

Every team loses by 3 once in a while. We're not the only team to do that.

This team handles adversity very well and tends to bounce back quick. We're not missing the playoffs.

Honestly, it's entirely possible that we could lose every game in regulation the rest of the way and still make the playoffs. This season is going to have lowest scoring 8-seeds ever.

Still bitter about '02, '06 and '09, I hope that team never makes the playoffs again.

I hope they keep MacLean and stay in the basement forever.
I don't irrationally hate any other team in any sport more than the Canes.

The irrational hate is becoming a bonus though, as my boss is a Bruins fan and it's common ground between the two of us. I love working in an office where the only thing I need to do to get on my boss' good side is say "**** the canes"

I wanna beat the Canes more than any other team cause of the last game. I would love to see Kovy get a hat trick, and point at Mac Loser laughing hysterically on his way to the bench.

Bad things happen when Maclean, and Kovy are in the same building though. Kovy don't score either unless it's for the other team.

And if you think we're gonna be able to make the playoffs losing every game left in regulation that's crazy.

Can anyone really say if we lost 5 in a row no one would be worried? We could probably go less than 500. Definitely less than 500. 3-4 more wins will get us in no problem at all, but we're gonna have to win some games.

By the way I don't think we're gonna lose 5 in a row just saying we're gonna have to win a few more games that's all.
