Jets @ Pens | Tue Mar 20 | 6PM CST | CONSOL Center | Game 73 | "Lunchpail Edition"

Last 10: Pittsburgh 9-0-1; Winnipeg 5-4-1

While the Pittsburgh Penguins try to track down the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, the
Winnipeg Jets are simply hoping to qualify for the postseason.

If both teams succeed, Tuesday night's matchup could be a first-round playoff preview.

The Jets begin a crucial three-game road trip with a monumental challenge as they try to snap the
franchise's 10-game losing streak in Pittsburgh amid what will be a raucous atmosphere for Sidney
Crosby's first home game in three months.

The Penguins' 11-game winning streak is over after they blew a two-goal lead in the third period and
lost 3-2 in the final second of overtime Sunday in Philadelphia, but rivals may worry Pittsburgh's
best hockey lies ahead thanks to the health of Crosby and star defenseman Kris Letang.

Although he didn't have any points against the Flyers, Crosby totaled five assists in his first two
games back from concussion symptoms - wins over the New York Rangers and New Jersey last week.

The superstar center has averaged more than 16 minutes of ice time since his return.

"I just want to make sure that I am getting better and feeling better each game," Crosby said. "I
think as a group we played really well here in the last few. Most of the time we've done some really
good things. So, we just want to keep building off that."

The Penguins also want to catch the East-leading Rangers, whom they trail by three points.

Pittsburgh, though, has a game in hand and seven of its final 11 contests at home, where Crosby
hasn't played since a Dec. 5 loss to Boston.

The Jets (34-30-8) may wish they didn't have to play any games in Pittsburgh. The Penguins (44-21-6)
have averaged 4.5 goals while winning 10 in a row at home against the Winnipeg/Atlanta franchise,
which has won four times in 23 all-time visits.

Hart Trophy candidate Evgeni Malkin had five points to power the Penguins' 8-5 win over the visiting
Jets on Feb. 11. Ondrej Pavelec yielded all eight goals to fall to 0-5-0 with a 5.42 goals-against
average in Pittsburgh.

Making his eighth straight start, Pavelec gave up a pair of untimely tallies Sunday against
Carolina. The Jets led entering the final period after Antti Miettinen's first two goals of the
season, but the Hurricanes answered with a pair on 19 third-period shots for a 4-3 win.

"This one will stick in there for a long time," Jets coach Claude Noel said. "To me, the bottom line
with this game is that if we don't make the playoffs, we don't deserve to make the playoffs. That's
the bottom line. We don't deserve it.

"You can go down the road record (11-19-4) all you want, you can go down all the other areas you
want, but if we don't make it, it's because we don't deserve to make it."

The Jets are still 8-4-2 in their last 14 games, getting 21 points from Blake Wheeler and 19 from
Evander Kane in that stretch, but they slipped four points behind eighth-place Washington in the
East after the Capitals won Monday at Detroit.

Winnipeg, which has a game in hand on both Washington and ninth-place Buffalo, visits the Capitals
on Friday.

"We're going to play a team that's fighting for their playoff lives," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma told
his team's official website. "They're talking about playoff hockey. ... That's what the next game is
for us. We know we're playing a team that could very well possibly be the eighth seed and that we
could be seeing them again in the playoffs as well."

Somebody is up late/early Nice work as always.

I think people over estimate the effect of a good team, anybody can beat anybody in this league. Go JETS!

Somebody fell asleep 10 mins before 1am / Midnight, and just woke up to hit the "post" button. Back to sleep now.

Oh, but before that: I agree. The Jets CAN win this, they CAN win road games, etc. This road game nonsense is all in their head. They will have to put EVERYTHING on the line tonight, but it's doable, though very difficult. That's a durned good team in Pittsburgh.

Go Go!

It's going to be tough, but this is the position we are in. We're still in the hunt, but now we have to find a way to win consistently on the road and it needs to start tonight.

Let's hope Malkin doesn't try to prove he is better tonight. I think he has ripped us to shreads enough for one season.

the ***** to be honest

For all the hate I have thrown at Antro this year.. I am more then willing to say that he has been playing quite well as of late.

His subtraction from the lineup could really hurt that line.
They have clicked recently

Really sucks to lose Antropov with the way he has been playing.

I wonder what kind of ice time Noel will give that line.

It's also funny to think how quickly things can change in professional sports. Maxwell gets waived by the Jets and goes to Anaheim. Plays a bit there and then gets waived again. Comes back to Winnipeg and gets put in the AHL. Would he have thought when he was first waived by the Jets that he would be back in the NHL with the Jets in March as they embark on the most important road trip of the season, and as they march into Pittsburgh?

Let's see.

Pens 9-0-1 in their last 10
Crosby and Letang back and playing great
Crosby's first game back in Pittsburg
Pens mad as heck about losing to Phili
Pens also highly motivated to catch Rangers for first over all
Jets struggle horribly on the road.

vs.

Pens meet the streak killers!

Gotta put my vcash on the Jets.

Please win, Jets, please win.

I'm hoping for a win here, but to be honest, I am expecting a loss. Prove me wrong, Jets.

don't feel like this is the Jets best option!

I have to avoid the tinfoil hat right now because unless something has happened drastically to Maxwell since his cup of coffee with the Jets earlier this year this move is a head scratcher at best and at worst....Ok I won't go there this morning. 36 games, 22 points, and a -6 for the first place Ice Caps...............why Not Cormier or Klingberg, i would think a taste of this NHL playoff hunt for the Jets would be a very real learning experience for two prospects that could possibly crack the roster one day?

Machacek was an awesome call up since he was the leading scorer for the Caps but this one is puzzling? Perhaps Machacek and Maxwell are line mates in St John’s and have some chemistry?

It's ok we're only playing the Pens so what could possibly go wrong

This is the 2nd toughest game of the year on paper next to arriving in Detroit at 3:30 in the morning on a back to back to play the red hot Wings at home. My optimism scale is registering at less than 1% this morning. I am hoping tonight at about 10:00 pm I am shaking my head and saying:

"I guess that’s why they play the games"

So...anyone got thoughts on why we would have recalled Maxwell over Cormier or Macanaur? are they both injured? Would Macanaur need to go through waivers?

Sorry, Maxwell hasn't really been on my radar at all this season so I found it odd that he'd be the one getting the call.

EDIT: i see ps shares my concerns. Though i'd love to see klingberg up i can see why they would have prefered a natural center, but i still don't get how Maxwell > Cormier/Macanaur

agreed, after losing just about every faceoff in the 3rd against Carolina, I woudl think you'd want somebody who can win a few around for this game. if Winnipeg is going to win, puck possession will be a huge factor

The Jets will need to greatly tighten up their neutral zone play versus the last time they faced the Pens in Pittsburgh... or they'll just get shredded again. It can be done, in theory.

This basically sums it up for me as well. I have a bit more hope now that I hear Thiessen will start, but then again, it's not like Fleury played well in the Jets last game vs. Pittsburgh. So much offensive firepower on that team, don't know how we're going to handle it.
