The Stars didn't give up on Mike Smith. He was traded to Tampa as the centerpiece to acquire Brad Richards. He was valued highly by many teams at the time, including Dallas, where he was blocked from the starting position by Turco.
Great piece about Doan and a genuine tribute to him by Roenick. The silver lining of a Coyotes move may be that Doan is forced to finally go to a more competitive organization. I think you can easily make a strong argument that Doan is one of the few reasons the team is still here in the first place.
