Leafs fans now chant ‘Fire Burkie'

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sport...rticle2376093/

Quote:
What is clear is that there’s a vacuum at Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment right now – a lack of adult supervision that will unfortunately be the new norm until the sale of Teachers' stake in MLSE is finished. Tom Anselmi is more or less the ranking guy under Larry Tanenbaum but there’s no sense that either of them are in a position or have the inclination to relieve Burke of his job, which for most franchises would be the next move given the mess that has become 2011-2012. But, really: what else does this franchise have but Burke? It’s pathetic – but it’s true. No other Canadian team puts it’s G.M. front and centre. Few teams in sports do it. There are times when this franchise – I swear, I believe this – is the Chicago Cubs (minus the lovable nature.) It will never win. Ever. Somehow, some way, they’ll screw it up.

There were ‘Fire Burkie’ chants at the Air Canada Centre Tuesday night, as the Maple Leafs embarrassed themselves yet again in a 5-2 loss to the New York Islanders in a game that ended with acres of empty seats and nasty, braying remnants. Matt Moulson’s first of two third-period goals, with Matt Frattin in the penalty box serving a delay of game penalty, broke open a 2-2 tie in a game in which the Leafs managed 14 shots, 24 hours after firing just 13 shots on goal in an 8-0 loss to the Boston Bruins. The dressing room was closed for 20 minutes after the game, which gave the Leafs ample time to practice their blank stares and shrugs.
Quote:
Burke is going nowhere. Not with negotiations on a new collective agreement coming; a bad time if ever to bring in somebody and expect them to hit the ground running. The only way that changes is if sometime this off-season, Burke gets rid of one of his many assistant general managers. That will be a sign that the game has changed, that somebody in the new ownership group has the ear of somebody else. Much like a head coach being ordered to get rid of an assistant coach, if Burke is told to divest himself of, say, a David Nonis or two it will be a sign that the suits have awakened; that the guys who actually do up their neckties instead of letting them hang on either side of the collar have awakened and want to take back their team.

Truth is, more and more of Burke’s supporters will tell you they do not care whether or not Burke’s back. They’re all talked out; tired of the made-up, personalized trade deadlines and desire to meddle in the affairs of other teams and the league in general. Bored of the broad pronouncements, the sappy attachments to the Colton Orrs of the world; the tiresome tilting at windmills and the flippant “I could have traded for four first-round draft picks,” stuff. ‘Fire Burke,’ they started to chant loudly enough in the third period that the P.A. system at the ACC seemed a little louder than usual during stoppages. Really, at this stage the only response is a shrug and a ‘whatever.’

All that is missing is Burke brings back Ron Wilson to be a special assistant to the President. Make that an 8 headed managment team. A case of Too many cooks in the kitchen.

I actually thought they were trying to drown the fans out with the music.... but figured it was just a coincidence. It was very hard to hear the chant (I didn't hear it) on TV because they were so quickfire on the music

I wasn't at the game, but I don't remember hearing it at all on TV.

Did anyone hear it?

I heard it on TV, well stream actually.

It wasn't that loud, but I heard it. Maybe because I had my 150$ earphones listening to the game?

it was faint, but people were posting about hearing it in the GDT as the game was going on...

the thing is something like this will just pick up momentum

i don't see it slowing down

burke is the idiot who said that 'it would not be fair to subject wilson to that again' thus telling the fans their actions payed off

blair only heard it because he was sitting right with the only guys yelling it on media row

Burke has always been condescending to this fanbase, with his big talk about the Big Blue, the flippant remarks, the loud declarations on all the things he plans on doing, his philosophies and rules, his blueprint, etc.

I've always said it, why does he actually need so many assistants? Either he can handle the job himself, or the committee can run this team into the ground without him. For the life of me, I can't understand what they have Nonis, Loiselle, Dudley and whomever else working on day to day. They stink at pro scouting, they can't assess their own team, they rarely make a hockey trade without taking on a big salary risk (Lombardi, Lupul, Giguere, Phaneuf) that fails as often as it pays off, they suck at UFA signings, they get bent over the barrel on the Grabovski negotiations...

They should just fold the team and give us the Phoenix Coyotes or something.

Anyway, you can't fire the GM two weeks after the coach, that would smell more bush league more than not...

I heard it (the Chants, via my Rogersondemand stream, faint and all, but you could hear it. As well, the music DJ was trigger happy, blasting the music a split second after the whistle went to drown out Leaf Nation.

honestly, even MLSE's own Andy Frost is having enough of this - just listen to the frustration in his voice and how he's slowly becoming more and more negative towards this team.

Burke should be fired. This is not team USA. This is Toronto, Canada and your fake promises and lame excuses has grown old. He should be fired on the reason that he kept Wilson here as long as he did.

Ship him out.

Don Cherry for GM! Lol, atleast he puts Canada first!

Could it be you simply nodded off ND in the 3rd period from all the excitement of the Leafs mounting a blazing 13 shot attack that you missed it?

I heard a Fire Blair. There was a lot less interest though. No one really cared either way.
