Here's an issue for you. We have two needs in the top 6 - a big center and a top 6 winger. So here's the question:
Would you prefer to draft a franchise center (Grigorenko / Galchenyuk) and shift Desharnais to wing, or draft a franchise winger (Forsberg) and keep Desharnais at center?
We have no star caliber forward so to me it doesn't matter whether it's a center or a winger. I don't think our pick is going to be playing with us next season anyway so we can't draft based on the lineup we have right now.

Desharnais is good, but he's not Sidney Crosby.
It is a matter of organizational depth though isn't it? If you clearly have a glaring need for a particular type of player in your prospect pool, shouldn't that affect the draft? I mean, not looking only at current team needs.
I'd say that if the gap is small between the BPA and the player that best addresses your need, you draft that player. If the gap is huge, draft BPA. I believe there is some room to maneuver here.

What's our bigger draft need going forward?
Mods, feel free to merge with the draft thread.
Draft the franchise center...they are near impossible elsewise to acquire. Habs been 15 years without one. Can sign the Coles or Giontas for top wingers.

Not to mention Kristo and Gallagher while we have zero depth at center. I don't see us going BPA here.
What we draft now doesn't even involve our current team. Grigo or Galchenyuk are a few years away of being top 2 centers on the habs. By that time, many things will have changed on the team. One of DD or Plek might not even be on this team in 2-3 years. BPA for me but i really hope the BPA is a center, hence Grigo or Galchenyuk.

Zero depth at center?
For next year, we have DD, Plek and Eller as our top 3 Centers for the top 3 lines.
On the wings, our top 3 line wingers are MaxPac, Cole and... and... Gionta? Bourque? Moen? I really can't name 9 good wingers that are ready for top three lines for next year.

This. I'd honestly rather get a winger though at this point it looks like unless we win the lottery we'll take a center. I'd love to have top 3 lines that look like
and after Yakupov, I'm firmly in the "Dumba" camp.
Kid has all the elements, especially mental, to turn into an elite dman along the lines of a S.Weber.
Grigorenko or Galchenyuk are the flashier picks, and might even be the more effective "immediate" contributors, but I'm more than willing to bet that 4-5 years down the road, Dumba establishes himself as one clearly one of the top 2-3 players from this draft class.
Defense isn't where we need the most help, obviously, but you draft Dumba & that makes it easier to perhaps package one of the other talented prospect dmen for some offensive help.

In the minors, we have no center depth, not to mention that the combination of DD, Pleks and Eller aren't championship calibre right now. Our wingers? MaxPac, Cole, Gionta, Gallagher and Kristo. Our center depth is far weaker than our wingers right now.
A good deal of Montreal's re-building program rests with the balls that will be expelled from a machine. Beyond that it's Timmins opinion of what is BPA.
Hopefully Gauthier is getting a mani-pedi that day and is nowhere near the thought process.
I hope it is not a defenseman because I find them harder to judge at 18 years old. They generally develop later hence why high percentage underachieve taken this high in draft and many top ones come later in draft ie. Markov, Sean Weber, Chara, Lidstrom, Subban to name a few

1. Nail Yakupov 1 Sarnia (OHL) 10/6/93 RW L 5'11/189 42 31 38 69 +15 2. Mathew Dumba 2 Red Deer (WHL) 7/25/94 D R 5'11/183 66 20 34 54 -4
3. Filip Forsberg 3 Leksands (SWE) 8/13/94 LW R 6'2/181 43 8 9 17 +3
4. Morgan Rielly 4 Moose Jaw (WHL) 3/9/94 D L 6'0/190 18 3 15 18 +6
5. Alex Galchenyuk 5 Sarnia (OHL) 2/12/94 C L 6'1/197 0 0 0 0 0
6. Griffin Reinhart 6 Edmonton (WHL) 1/24/94 D L 6'3/202 55 12 23 35 +23
If we keep dropping I would love to draft Reinhart also! The recent injuries to Galchenyuk are worrisome.
Anyways, I'll blindly agree with whoever Timmins picks !
