Gomez

Ok, lock this up, flame it, whatever

Reading up on the trade board... if Scott Gomez is bought out...

He isn't horrible at faceoffs...

We could sign him and Penner and make a 'rehab' line...

I repeat... he's not horrible at faceoffs...

With him AND penner, you'd have the "Second Chance" 2nd line...

And now, feel free to throw stuff at me

Maybe on a basement contract for our 4th line, but even that is something I would hope to avoid. As someone else said, I'd rather take a shot on someone like Stoll.

For 700k or less I'd take him as a 4th line C. For anything more than that no.

I admit I would take Penner if the price is right (low as hell)... though I still believe this bargain-Bob mentality amongst the Ducks fans has to stop

The main reason Gomez gets bashed on HF is because of his horrible horrible contract. Other than that, he's a fine 3rd line center and it was only a couple of years ago he was a 50+ point center. With that being said, we have too many small bodies already. I'd rather sign Stoll for the 3rd line role but wouldn't want either for the 2nd line position at this point.

Don't give Murray any ****ing ideas! There are other guys out there who are good at faceoffs as well. BM already likes boom and bust, down on their luck kinda guys and it rarely works. That being said, I won't be surprised if Murray tries to sign Penner this summer.

Oh my god I actually read the full OP.

You want Penner AND Gomez as a rehab line? And make that our second line? Any team with a rehab line can expect failure. Any line that can be called a rehab line has a high chance to fail. If we're not winnin for Mackinnon then by all means do this. But otherwise...terrible idea. I don't mean to offend you but Gomez could center Perry and Malkin and he wouldn't break 40 points. Penner could play the left wing on our top line and maybe get a marginal 30 points. Put them on the same line and that's a whole new kind of suck. I'd take a Bonino, Palmieri, Hagman line over that.

Hey, at least he's thinking outside the box.

The idea actually has some merits under certain conditions. If they sign for REALLY cheap, and if they are only expected in a backup role. What I mean is you intend to have a 2nd line of young guys, and you intend to have a scoring 3rd line, and Gomez and Penner are on the 3rd line serving as backups for when the young 2nd liners have a down period.

The problems are a) I don't have enough faith in our prospects as is to be a 2nd line, even with backup b) I doubt Gomez and Penner will sign for cheap enough (3rd line type salaries) to make that work... they'll probably get better offers than that c) team is soft enough already and should be looking to improve that d) trying to have 3/4 scoring lines is a really bad idea for a budget team because scorers are more expensive per minute than checkers.

In fact d) is actually the main premise of a big post that I was planning. I meant to talk more about it, and how Murray's insistence on trying to get more scoring (he's said it a few times in interviews) is hurtful with the budget. And also actually counter to what's going on in the NHL right now. This is one of my bigger issues with Murray, I think he's building on an outdated plan that is made even harder with the budget.

But even as scorers they don't work. Imagine icing a line of Bertuzzi-Morrison-Cogliano...that line would be useless offensively. Maybe chipping in 20-30 goals collectively for the whole year.

Penner-Gomez would be a step down. You could add Perry to that line and it would still suck.

Even in the scenario of having a kid line as the second scoring line. You don't use one of your four lines as a rehab center.

Let's assume Blake, Koivu, Teemu don't return. We keep Hagman and sign Penner and Gomez

You run
DSP-Getzlaf-Perry
Ryan-Bonino-Palmieri
Penner-Gomez-???Cogliano
Beleskey-Holland/Pelly-Parros

You could switch Penner and DSP but the LW spot on that top line would hardly improve (and from what I've seen it would look worse) and then you've got a third line that consists of one hitter who requires great passing to finish plays and score, one sieve of a hockey player who can't finish worth a damn, and a guy who chips in in sputters.

You could try

Penner-Getzlaf-Palmieri
Ryan-Bonino-DSP
Cogliano-Gomez-Perry
Beleskey-Pelly-Parros

but that's just a new kind of suck. Perry's play will take a step back because of Gomez and Cogliano's stone hands. Getzlaf could benefit if Palmieri plays the way he's expected to (20-30 goal scorer) Penner won't do much to help. Seriously it's not like they didn't TRY to put him with better players. He's played on lines with Richards, Carter, Gagne, Kopitar and it was the same story. next season is a contract year for Getzlaf and Perry. This setup is detrimental to them.

I understand thinking outside of the box, but don't think outside the atmosphere either. There are MUCH better options than Gomez and Penner.

Gomez is done as a top 6 player but Penner is likely just having a down year in an organization that is majorly underachieving offensively. The thought that he will bounce back and be a 20+ goal scorer again is not absurd at all.

His goal totals since coming into the league:
29, 23, 17, 32, 23, 7.

The 7 seems to me like an outlier. Just like Getzlafs 9 this year will be an outlier. Penner is a 29 year guy who didn't make the NHL full time until he was 24, I doubt he's gone from a 20 goal top 6 forward to a 7 goal 4th liner in one season. I'm not saying I want Penner back but I'm not totally against it if he's cheap. I'd rather see Penner signed (at a reasonable price) than see nobody significant brought in at all which is what I think happens.

And in case nobody noticed, Penner is not the only one putting up uncharacteristically bad numbers for LA. Richards is on pace for 45 points, his lowest total since 2007. Althought I think the addition of Carter has kickstarted their offense enough that they make the playoffs. Which I hate.
