What's the deal with Montoya after this? Had a soft spot for the guy after how his career has gone.
Also, smells like another Roloson situation. Sign him, get some good mileage out of him next season, then sell him for some assets depending how the season is going. He's probably happy to have a say in where he goes and to be making more money than he'd get on the open market.
Wooooo!!! Couldnt be happier about this signing. Nabby has been stellar this year. Could this possibly be the extra icing on the cake for a big ufa to sign here this season?
Im not gunna name any names or pipedreams (*cough* suter *cough*)
Fine with me. He may retire as well. There are some people saying that the insurance ends this year for Dipietro in his contract. Insurance has been picking up the tab this whole time for his injuries and Wang isn't going to pay 4.5 million so DP can hang out on a beach sipping on margaritas while he nurses another lower body injury. He will buy him out and save 13.5 million overall.
What's funny is that if DP gets bought out, combine his 1.5 cap hit with Nabby's 2.75 cap hit and you get 4.25 million which is still less then what DP would be earning overall.
No fair enough. You gotta do what you gotta do. I just thought it was pretty funny, that's a hella long time. DiPietro was well on his way to being a solid goalie before all these injuries, it really is too bad. Oh well, he'll get his 27 million and be set for life, I doubt he would even try to come back after that, just enjoy the money and not keep beating up on his already broken down body. Not a bad life.

so i get to watch another year of this idiot giving up soft goals?
the guy cant play a puck to save his ****ing life.......and when he does actually play the puck, he does something stupid with it.
and he has a five hole that is slightly smaller than the grand canyon.....
i guess its another top 5 pick for long island in 2013.........

That actually makes Detroit trying to sign him make a lot of sense. Detroit loves goalies that can't play the puck at all.
Before they hit the ufa markets Hamrlik,Aucoin,Niinama,Blake,Frans Nielsen and Moulson all publicly pushed for extensions.Tightfisted Isles only kept the ones who signed team friendly deals:Nielsen and Moulson.

Aucoin was way overpaid and what be crazy to turn down that contract.
Hamrlik was not doing good with the Isles and was not going to be resigned.
Blake. See Aucoin. I was happy he left.
I liked Janne but he was no star.
Isles dont let all star free agents go easily like any team. Ryan Smith
Is one guy who NYI got burned on in recent memory.
Nabokov's whole story of last season has ended quite nicely, much like a fairy tale ending. He and his family like Long Island and he likes being an Islander, it's as simple as that. When he was claimed, to think any of this would happen would be crazy, but things just seem to work out for the best eventually and that's what happened in the end.
I love this re-signing and I love how things have turned out for Nabokov and the Islanders. He's been really good for the Isles this season and it's great for them to keep him and it's for a very reasonable price. They have their starting goalie re-signed now and they can look to address other areas of need in the offseason. The team is going in the right direction and has been for a while now; moves like this prove that.
It'll be interesting to see what they do with Montoya this summer. I imagine he will make it to free agency and test the market.

Montoya just got back from injury and has played well in his first start. Al is a very solid #2 Goalie. Isles have two sOlid prospects,DP, and Nabokov now. Considering we gave up only a 6 th rd pick for him, losing him as a free agent this offseason is not a problem.
Not following you here.... DiPietro is out for the rest of the season and has one foot out the door.... Montoya is UFA.
If anything, signing Nabby makes the Isles a better team now, and in the future because it allows them to develop Nilsson and Poulin properly.
As far as rasing draft position in a losing season, they're damned if they do, damned if they don't. They have plenty of good young prospects, it's time to make the team more appealing to potential UFA's that can catapult them into a playoff team.
The Isles didn't improve the goaltending position, it's still fairly average even when the signed Nabakov. This move didn't improve the team and it'll be another season of mediocrity if Montoya/Nabakov/DiPietro are the goalie tandem.

How can you say Nabokov hasn't improved our goaltending since last year?
This seems great for NYI. Nabakov would have been a hot commodity if available IMO. Maybe not like previous years but he would have had 2 or 3 teams after him for sure. To have a high profile player commit to another year is a good message to the league that they are looking to build a winner.

Read the post he's referring to...it said re-signing Nabokov made us a better team now and in the future. I must agree with Kershaw for the most part, that if anything the Islanders are the same at the goaltender position as this year b/c Nabokov is already here. It's semantics really. Now if Nabokov is better next year, then you can argue differently.
In terms of the Islanders goaltending being average, it probably is according to stats. Nabokov has played very well, but the bar has been pretty low for Long Island and league-wide goaltending is sensational for the most part. If the Islanders can tighten up team defense, then Nabokov can be better. I mean, Brian Elliot with a sub 2.00 GAA is really mostly a product of Hitchcock's system, though I'm sure he's played very well this year.
