Red Wings see no reason why they shouldn't tighten up defensively, despite injuries
Quote:
DETROIT – There is a direct correlation between the Detroit Red Wings' growing injured list and their rising goals against total.

But it doesn't have to be that way, coach Mike Babcock said. The more skill and depth this team loses, the tighter it should be playing defensively.

“I think there's lots we can do,'' Babcock said. “We can try to limit our errors and be sound defensively.''

The Red Wings have allowed 20 goals during a five-game winless streak (0-4-1). They have yielded three or more goals in seven consecutive games, which they had done only seven times in their previous 24 games.

Having scored more than two goals only twice in eight games, they can't overcome mistakes like before.

“We're not going to score that way, so let's play real well defensively and dig in,'' Babcock said. “Is there anything wrong with digging in and playing tight to the vest?''

They will need to do that Wednesday against the Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Led by outstanding goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, the Rangers are third in the NHL in goals against per game (2.15).

The Red Wings, meanwhile, will be without goalie Jimmy Howard, who is day-to-day after re-aggravating a groin injury that caused him to miss three games earlier this month.

The club recalled Ty Conklin from the Grand Rapids Griffins. If he clears re-entry waivers at noon Wednesday, he will start against the Rangers. If Conklin is claimed, Jordan Pearce will make his NHL debut.

“We're going to play a good, hard-working Rangers team that has good depth and goaltending,'' Babcock said. “We're not racing them to 10. We can't win like that. But there's a way we can win. Let's embrace it.''

Time to start a roll, Wings win 3-1. Z, Miller and Smith with the goals.

I like the Wings. You guys are usually my bandwagon team in the West whenever the Rangers are out of it.

Let's agree to each get a point and play for the extra one in OT.....as long as you let us win then

Here's to a good injury-free game. Really pulling for both teams to start hitting their stride as the regular season winds down.

I hope so. Then we know for sure this team hit the rock bottom and it's gonna trend up from next game.

Was it the 10-3 game someone was referring to? The most goals the Rangers scored all year is a little more than half of that 6.

Doesn’t look good.

Conklin + still injury ravaged + away game = recipe for disaster

Who knows though, maybe the Wings can finally get back on track.

I had a chance to go to this. Good seat and not even face value. I turned it down. Not worth the money for a chance to watch the griffins lose.

Another game that'll be blacked out on Gamecenter.

Will watch because the Rangers are damn good and the Wings have been playing better, bit by bit. The wins haven't been there, but we're slowly getting there.

Nyquist with Datsyuk? I guess that and the Z line will be worth the time to watch the game.

Please don't be a sieve Conklin, please.

No joke on Conklin- kinda feel bad for the guy every time I've seen that commercial since he started struggling and got sent down to GR.

Here's my proposal for a motivational tactic for the Wings- use CGI to replace Conks w/ whatever Wing is dragging the team down the most each week. Would have loved to seen Bert, Mule or Q walking out of that bathroom stall at times over the last few weeks, plunger in hand.

For some odd reason I have a great feeling about this one. Datsyuk-Nyquist. Z's line.

Wings win 5-2. Dats 2 goals, Nyquist with one, Filppula and White with the others.

Don't have the greatest feeling going into this game. Any point the Wings could get would be welcome, hope to keep it tight and minimize the chances. Conks has played well in Grand Rapids and is actually game sharp for the first time since late October so we shall see if that makes a difference.

Maybe by passing on the chance to see this one at the Garden the Wings will make me regret my decision. We can only hope.

I think you should have gone- there's still Datsyuk, and the Rangers are a fun team to watch. I like their mix of skill and grit, nice core of young F's and D, great goalie. Maybe you've seen a game in the Garden, but I haven't yet and wouldn't pass that up.
