Sign Lupul to an extension this summer or wait until next season?
If your Brian Burke do you try and sign Joffrey Lupul this summer to a contract extension or wait until sometime next season? My thinking is if he does it early enough he can get Lupul at a better term because if he puts up the same stats next season, he will want even more $ and years the longer he remains un-signed.
If he only wants a 5 mil cap hit then give it to him as fast as you can. I don't see him scoring less than 60 points a year and 5mil cap hit is around what other players would have gotten.
i would trade him this summer. if he reverts back to his old self, which is quite possible (especially if Kessel is traded) we get less in return the longer we keep him around. i am skeptical that he will repeat this years numbers ever again
i think he is worth in the $5 million x 4 years range. i know people are saying this year is a fluke but there has been steady progression in points through out his career. it has been injuries which has been his biggest problem making him look worse then he actually is.
having said that, lupul might need to be the piece that is moved in order to make a trade to improve this team. if thats the case its bad form to sign a guy to a multi year deal only to trade him although it does happen.
if given a choice i would rather resign lupul and move kulemin and or mac if necessary. lupul is just about the only player that kessel has shown chemistry with. even if we were able to bring in another rock star like nash or parise, there is no guarantee that they will have the same chemistry with kessel that lupul has

You must think Burke is going to be fired as well then this summer. Because as long as he is GM, Phil Kessel will be a Toronto Maple Leaf.
Wait and see how next season goes. If he continues with his pace keep him. Guy has the top compete level among our forwards except maybe Grabo. Infact I have toiled with the thought that he should be the Captain. He worked through alot of adversity to get himself here. He loves Toronto and has represented us well (him at the allstar game was awesome). I do not want to see him traded as of now with what he has proven to us this season, not only with points but the intanjibles he brings.

I would give Lupul the C too unless we get someone better in the Offseason which I don't see happening. He would mak a better leader than Phaneuf. As for resigning him id we can't acquire a top 6 forward this offseason than resign him.
