theyre stats are not the same since nov 11ish. about a 0.15-.2 difference in S%

but i agree, we could benefit from a better, more consistent goalie, but i want to keep dubnyk as a backup/challenger, and then theres the issue of finding someone else. i'd look for a low cost, middle aged ufa who would come on the cheap, ala smith/elliot/theodore this year, and run a dual goalie system.

I think you've answered your own question - Khabibulin is a 4 time NHL all star, Stanley cup winner, IHL league MVP, and can't win with the current team. You could say he's washed up, but his play early in the season would indicate that he still can play.

Dubnyk appears to be an acceptable starter. (40 games, weak defense, acceptable save percentage.) I'd rather Edmonton spend the cap dollars on a strong defense and the forwards, than overpay (ala Luongo.) for goaltending. Looking at Detriot, their brainstrust appears to agree.

Thats just so they can accuse the Oilers of tanking all summer long.

If Dubnyk didn't "put one in himself" every game he'd be a lock for the Vezina. He's currently ranked 17th among goalies in SV% that have played 40 or more games. I think he gets piled on here when theres so many other individuals to point at

At times this year yes Elliot was the best goalie in the league. Never said Khabi was a bum and Dubnyk was a star. I said he's been on a nice little run since the D got healthy. Yeah his puck handling skills are beyond bad and hes prone to some weak goals, but he has put a good string of starts together. This is encouraging for any fan of the team. Lets be honest he and Khabi are going nowhere until after next years trade deadline. I for one would be happy if he turns into a serviceable number 1, its one less thing on the to do list.

To your we need a better goalie if we want to contend Chris Osgood says hi.

Missed the game
Why did Horcoff only play 8:55 ? & why doesn't this happen more often

Hurt his back or something and was out the rest of the game?

I wasn't watching overly closely.

I noticed in the 3rd that he was replaced by Belanger on that line. Did he get hurt?
edit: ahh back spasms

Speaking of TOI, Petry played 28:50
Really makes me wonder what his contract is going to look like after this year.

Dubnyk can go either way. Saying he'll never make it as a starter is just as foolish as singing his praises after one good night. 25 is young for a goalie.

Is 17th good enough though. 30 goalies have played 40 or more games this season that puts Dubnyk just below average. Dubnyk has been very good, bordering on elite for the last 10 games or so. The problem is that that goaltending isn't always there from him. Maybe he'll be able to find that consistency, but he had similar runs last year that ended up getting him a sv% on the season that was right below average.

Just below average isn't good enough. Yeah it's better than Khabibulin, but Bulin has been a legit starter for a full season in this league once since 03-04. Considering the unfortuante defense this team has, and likely will continue to have next season the Oilers can't afford to have a goaltender who gives up a bad goal a game in almost every one of his starts.

It's sort of weird how closely the goaltending has mirrored last season (minus Khabibulin's otherworldly first 10 games). Dubnyk got hot in the end and Bulin couldn't buy a game to save his life. Khabi had 2 wins from January to April last year. So far from January to late March he has 1.

Glad to see the boys winning; though I am even more elated to see the Habs continue to win.

This was the only Oiler game you've watched all year. Admit it.

For my part it was the first Panther game that I've watched all year.

I'm still trying to figure out the unmitigated hate for the Oilers on the main board. It's freaking confusing.

Who cares? They'll hate us even more when we become a winning franchise again.

Yeah, I yearn for the day when we're not being told that our team is irrelevant. That'll be nice.

Pure jealousy, (Hall, Nuge, Ebs, past glory) let them hate us frankly it will make their tears of unimaginable sadness (later on if and when we win the cup again) that much tastier and satisfying. (scott tenorman must die)

I laughed when i saw the flames jersey on that guy behind the net with the bear stickhandling, is that their shootout coach?

Him and Smid are definitely going to get some massive raises. But you know what, they've carried this defense all year and deserve it. Just imagine if we can add a #1 dman to play against the top guys, how much better it will make Smid and Petry look.

Thanks. I PVR'ed the game but likely won't even bother to watch it. Just can't muster up the energy to watch another meaningless abstract game against a team from "Florida"

What possessed the NHL to think that people could ever care about a hockey club in Florida?

Just too surreal. I haven't looked at the schedule but I can just imagine the next game must be in Carolina.

If the Southeast division dropped into the sea would anybody notice? Just throw Washington in an Eastern division and flush the rest.

Thanks NHL..

ps I don't know what the record is but this could go down as the shortest pgt in this boards history. I see nobody cares about the game last night.

the biggest thing i did notice is how the oilers crumble under pressure.

put any sort of aggressive forecheck on them and it's instant panic and miscues. you'd think by game 75 they'd have improved. doesn't look like they have in that aspect of the game.

just brutal.

Dubnyk was excellent. Every single forward (and yes this includes Omark) was backchecking hard and committed to defense. The ice was horrible. Incredible number of pucks bouncing over players sticks (both sides) killing good scoring chances.

We won.
