Will Carlyle take the "C" away from Phaneuf this summer.

I know there has been lots of speculation that Phaneuf should not be the captain, and is not the most liked guy in the dressing room. Also lots of talk that he does not get along with the younger players very good. Now that Carlyle has taken over the team do you think he will take the "C" from Dion?

I know that some of you guys will say sure, BUT who does he give it too if he takes it away? That is a good question. If he does take it away who do you think should get it?

We have seen this done on other NHL teams where they have taken the "C" away from a player and given it to a better suited Captain.

This is a huge long shot, but if Nash or Parise would to somehow land here in T.O, they could be candidates for it. No I am not implying that they will be Leafs, but you never know. The chances are very slim that they would come here.

So will Carlyle start fresh with a new Captain next season?

Nash would be a great captain here in Toronto. Too bad he will likely never be a Leaf.

He should.

Whether he will or not is a different story. As far as I'm concerned, Phaneuf is a disappointment in the sense of the great Captains before him that wore the blue and white. I can't name a worse leaf Captain to be honest, its quite sad.

No, from what I hear he is a fine captain. I think people think too highly of someone wearing the "C". If it's only one person that is showing leadership in the room then we are screwed.

I don't think he will, but I'm starting to think it might be the right option.

Maybe Phaneuf is suited best as a secondary leader - or maybe not even one at all.

He certainly has the tools, but sometimes I wonder if he can really help motivate the guys the way he needs to off-ice.

My only problem with giving someone else the C, would the new C and Phaneuf clash in the way they'd try to lead the team? I think Phaneuf would try to be a secondary leader no matter what, but who knows if that'd actually help, a la Iginla in Calgary.

Has this ever happened before? Where a young captain was removed of his duties as captain before?

A few captains have been stripped of their C, Marleau, Hull and Lecavalier all come to mind.

Leafs brass made such a big deal about bestowing the C on Phaneuf, even going a full season (or was it two?) before naming a Captain, that I don't see them just stripping it unless it's for a major reason. Phaneuf would have to screw up royally to loose the C.

I can picture Carlyle taking Phaneuf aside at some point before next fall and telling him what he expects from a captain. Carlyle is very direct in what he wants from his players so I imagine if he hasn't already spoken to Dion, he will at some point.

I doubt it. I'd like Lupul to be the captain (or have an A at least) though. I've heard him say countless times that he considers himself a leader on the team. He's a great example on and off the ice with where he is today. Vocal and well spoken guy as well.

Phaneuf - C
Lupul - A
Grabo - A

Komi shipped out somehow.

I like the looks of that.

He's not going to lose his C until there is someone who blatantly should have it instead. Stripping it is just asking for drama.

Who makes the choice of Captain on the Leafs though? Obviously with Phaneuf it wasn't the players and I suspect it wasn't Wilson. Does Carlyle have the power to go to Burke and tell him he's going to have to look stupid yet again in public and allow Carlyle to appoint a different player to wear the C? It isn't going to happen

He'll keep simply because no one else deserves it, despite the fact he doesn't himself

And what, exactly, have Parise or Nash done with their teams now that would earn them the C if they came here?

I like how everyone who says yes totally knows how the Leafs dressing room operates.

We should petition to have Gustavsson as captain.

I agree.

But I think they are also basing it on his play of recent and also his inability to get his team to play up to standard (as they have played before). But even still, that shouldn't merit them taking the C off his jersey.

I'm surprised the Leafs have never made a goalie the Captain.

The first two posts are about how Rick Nash would be a better candidate, so I think we're a little lost on this theory

Is there a legit justification for him keeping it?
