This is the argument I've been waiting for, but I've been surprised it hasn't been brought up yet (or I overlooked it). You said early on in the ELC thread that you felt he might be Dallas' most NHL ready prospect.

I didn't get the impression that he was as NHL ready as Chiasson or had the ability to dominate a game like Chiasson. I was definitely surprised the team puts him ahead of Alex to be totally honest. However, I trust Les Jackson when it comes to player development. He's a big part of Loui Eriksson getting top minutes despite the coaching staff not really wanting to go in that direction. He's also a major part of these great drafts Dallas is having. So I don't question the decision from a hockey standpoint or that Smith is ahead of Chiasson in terms of ability any longer. I have no problem being wrong when it comes to Jackson.

The draft is more of an inexact science because you're talking about teenagers, but most of the decisions we seem to know about from the pro level that Jackson has been involved have seemed to be fairly smart moves.

The idea that several guys are going to be jumping straight to the NHL next year from juniors/NCAA/Europe is not one I'm on board with unless injuries force their hand, but I'm more than OK with Dallas' development team, scouts, and GMJN identify an exceptional player and giving him an opportunity.

I don't think Reilly's NHL assignment is completely reflective of the organization's views of the two prospects relative to each other.

I also don't think this was much of Jackson's decision. There really isn't any harm for any prospect to play at least a handful of games in the AHL. Joe probably told him he needed one of these NCAA guys to fill a hole in the NHL lineup and Jackson probably recommended Reilly as the best candidate. Perhaps it's because Reilly is the better player, perhaps because he feels Chiasson is too important to rush.

If Chiasson is indeed being developed as a center prospect then he's not even a candidate for promotion because that's not really an area of need for the NHL club.

"is indeed" .... Is there a story saying the Stars are discussing this?

I know someone on here asked if it was possible just because he takes faceoffs, but "is indeed" would indicate someone from the organization said something.

Not trying to say they won't ... I'm just genuinely interested if the team has said anything one way or the other.

Oh yeah ... because unless he is moving to center, then Chiasson and Smith fill essentially the same role. Both guys appear to be excellent two-way wingers.

As far as why Smith goes over Chiasson, my guess would be Smith is probably the better goal scorer, but it's not like Chiasson's ability to score is poor.

I haven't found any indication one way or another. It is technically possible they move him although probably unlikely. I just mentioned it to cover all of my bases.

I'm a bit surprised .... Niagara loses their 2nd game in a row, and now the series is tied 2-2. They flat out dominated Oshawa the first 2 games.

I don't meant too, but I always forget about Troy Vance. Anyway, his team just got swept in the first round of the playoffs. He's in the exact same position as Stransky, and he's obviously available to come to Texas should Dallas choose to bring him in.

Disappointing playoffs for Stransky for sure. I'm sure the losses weren't because of his lack of production though.

Matej Stransky's teammate and fellow 2011 draft pick (Colorado) Duncan Siemens is joining Lake Erie (Colorado AHL affiliate) for the remainder of the season.

They actually have a chance of making the playoffs unlike Texas.

Saskatoon's head coach/GM is pissed about the team's effort this year and last year in the playoffs.

He said they are weak team that doesn't play with determination and falls apart when they are challenged. He wants to add 7 to 10 top players as Saskatoon prepares to host the Memorial Cup next year, but the article indicates that Matej Stransky's place with the team is save despite the coach/GM saying there are no untouchables.

It would have been nice to see Stransky get some pro games in this year (the lack of news would seem to indicate this won't happen) since a guaranteed Memorial Cup berth means his season wouldn't end until just before or after the AHL Calder Cup finals start.

Nemeth (#12) back in the lineup, same as Klingberg (#70), who got a point in the past game. Series tied 1-1.
3rd game underway, stream can be found on the usual sites.

Emil Molin also suited up for Brynas' last game but didn't actually see the ice.

Skellefteå AIK (John Klingberg) took a 2-1 series lead on AIK (Patrik Nemeth) yesterday.

Emil Molin suited up for Brynäs again, but he again didn't touch the ice. His team has a 2-1 series lead on Färjestad BK.

Ilves won 3-2 after OT, lead relegation series 3-1.
Jokipakka with an assist, -1, 24.27 ice-time.

So one more win and they avoid relegation, right?

Yep. I've heard they fully expect him to stay another year there. Should get huge ice-time and responsibility next season, he's already one of their most important dmen on the PP.
I'm fine with that, if Nemeth and Oleksiak join Texas Stars next season.

Yes that makes the most sense IMO as well. I wouldn't be shocked to see him play out his contract in Finland (13/14 according to Elite Prospects).

To retain his rights, Dallas has to sign him to an ELC by next June. Since he'll be 22 years old on Sept. 15 (2013), he'd sign a 2 year ELC. He could play out the final year of his Finnish contract and blow the first year of his ELC (Larsen blew a year of his ELC in Sweden). Then he'd only have to play one year on an ELC in North America.

On a side note Jere26, what does a top Finnish d-man earn a year?

I heard Väänänen might be the one who earns the most with 300k €. Depends on the team (Helsinki teams tend to pay more). Ilves though has financial struggles. On average a #1 dman earns about 200-250k € IIRC.

Ok so right now, about 1 euro = $1.333 USD.

So a guy like Jokipakka could earn $266K-$332,500 USD. On his ELC, he'll likely earn $67,500 USD (max AHL salary) + $90K signing bonus or $157,500 USD. However, since he signed the deal a couple years ago, he's probably not making exactly that much in Finland ($266K-$332,500 USD).

I'm not sure how the tax situation works in Finland, but I'll just assume it's at least reasonably similar.

I meant the percentage of money they are holding on too as opposed to the actual tax system.

Not sure, I'd think he could earn more in the AHL. Right now Ilves has a total budget for the whole team's salary expenses of 1 600 000 €. Thats ridiculous. That's only just over twice as much as Woywitka earns by himself
