Perkins: Long-suffering Maple Leaf fans may finally have reached their limit

http://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs/...ed-their-limit

Maple Leafs have good reason to feel embarrassed for their team: If the Florida Panthers make the playoffs this season, the Leafs will own the longest streak in the NHL without a post-season appearance.

Quote:
Kudos are due those Maple Leaf fans who finally spoke up. No, seriously. It appears many have reached the breaking point.

The customers at the Air Canada Centre who last month chanted “Fire Wilson,” in recognition of tasks undone by former coach Ron, were quickly rewarded. A few days later, Wilson was gone because his good friend, general manager Brian Burke, deemed it cruel and unusual punishment for him to hear that particular music again.

It brought to mind earlier direct action inspired by a local crowd, namely the “We Want Beer” serenades from Blue Jay fans, back in their baby-steps days, directed at then-Ontario premier Bill Davis. There was no escaping them. Eventually, the province got around to it — but it took FIVE YEARS, the first tap not turned on until 1982.

The Leaf folks got much faster action and perhaps emboldened by that success, a portion of the clientele has began directing its displeasure at the GM, who has failed to deliver on enough of his blowhard vows and, almost 3 ½ years along, has provided a team closer to last place than the playoffs.
Quote:
Historically, this is not a fan base known for rabid demands. Sure, they would on occasion boo players out of town, like Larry Murphy — how did that one work out? — but grumbling acceptance of the status quo, however lousy it might be, has been the hallmark of the Leaf customers for a long time. The championship drought since 1967 is embarrassing enough, but for by far the NHL's richest franchise to possess the longest streak in the league for not reaching the playoffs, which happens if Florida makes it this year, is downright humiliating.

Yet the fans keep coming, buying the overpriced beers and the jerseys — and the condos, of course — and staying loyal to the logo, however many times it is changed to sell more shirts. This phenomenon is viewed as both a positive and a negative, depending on how one interprets cause and effect. But that argument aside, until now the fans hadn't stood up and directly caused anyone to be fired.

Yawn.

Can a journalist in this friggin city at least come up with something new if they're gonna spew their bull**** to the masses?

How many years have idiots like Simmons, Feschuk etc have said that fans are at the breaking point but yet the ACC is always packed to the rafters no matter what?

The light at the end of the tunnel is a potential lottery pick this summer. Or would fans rather have another 9th place finish?

The whole article is a real piece of work, but this is the best excerpt. "and staying loyal to the logo, however many times it is changed to sell more shirts." Yeah and other NHL teams don't change their logo, hell all sports teams change their logo to sell more merch. What a moronic comment.

Yup, we know they suck, we don't need a new article every 3 days to tell us how they suck.

Criticism and finger pointing is easy. Finding solutions is more difficult and requires intelligence and a whole lot of luck.

They need to loose all their games and deliver a top 3 pick

Call up 4th liners from echl who will be over their head here in the nhl

Every win is aslap in the face to the die hard faithful leaf fans

It's not a broken record, and interest is really waning. And you guys saying that "it can't happen," are clearly way too young to remember the late 80s and very early 90s before Fletcher. Back then, you could buy good tickets at the MLG box office on game days. First game I went to in 1989 was against Minnesota, divisional game, and we bought good Greens about 5pm. Could have got Reds.

It's getting to that point again, with the Leafs as awful as they were during the close of the Ballard era. The Brogers folks have to be taking note of this. Really have to wonder if Burke gets canned at the end of the season. This is the worst it has been in Leafland since 1991 or so.

And it is absolutely ridiculous that so many posters here think a lottery-pick finish will be some kind of victory. ROFL Come on, guys. We're years into this supposed fast "non-rebuild" and the Leafs stink more today than they did when Burke took over.

Not allowed to call up a bunch of ECHL'ers, and only in imagination land do players try not to lose. Like it or not, the Leafs under the current roster will finish 3rd or 5th or 7th or 11th or wherever based on merit. Fans can't will them to lose just they can't will them to win.

As for the article, I'll believe fans have reached a breaking point when I see that a substantial number of season ticket holders don't renew. Until that happens, it'll be business as usual.

The problem is Burke was toeing company line from Peddie n MLSE

We never did a rebuild when we had nothing but a high pick to come Burke came in n got us kessel

High ens picks yield great firt liners..loook at landeskog, nugent hopkins, taveres, stamkos, crosby, ovechkin. Etc

Who would u rather have them or johnny pohl, hanson, crabb or bozak

Peddie hasn't been an issue since JFJ. He was muzzled when Burke was hired.

Perkins greatly underestimates the tolerance of Leafs fans. No matter how badly the Leafs play...we ain't going anywhere

i found this really funny - in the same paragraph, he rightfully points out that booing masses know nothing (Larry Murphy) but it's a good thing that we've 'reached our limit' with our playoff drought and can put pressure on MLSE? i shudder to think what the consensus of this fanbase would pressure the Leafs into doing if they were dumb enough to listen to us.

The consensus would be fire/trade everyone!

And then world peace would follow.

In terms of fans getting angry and frustrated, that is indeed happening, and rightfully so, the team is a total embarrassment.

As for what others have been discussing (not so much this article, but replies in this thread), the idea that Leafs fans could eventually stop supporting the team, I think it would take another couple years of miring near the bottom of the league (with few exciting young players to show for it) for Leafs fans to truly reach that breaking point. I do think it would happen eventually if the franchise remains on it's horrendous post-lockout track, but as a fanbase I don't think we're quite there yet, we're incredibly patient, and it would take truly epic, excruciatingly long term amounts of failure to happen.

Peddie was JFJ's puppet master...who left Burke an empty cupboard to work with when he arrived. Not making excuses for Burke, but he started with a lot less than he has now.
