Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award

One of the best Rangers awards given annually, and a personal favorite of mine.

http://rangers.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=78169

From now through March 29th, be sure to cast your vote for the Rangers player that you feel "goes above and beyond the call of duty."

Following the 1987-88 season, the Rangers established the award dedicated to paralyzed New York City police officer Steven McDonald, who was shot in the line of duty.

Past winners:

Jan Erixon 1987-88
Tony Granato 1988-89
John Vanbiesbrouck and Kelly Kisio 1989-90
Jan Erixon 1990-91
Adam Graves 1991-92
Adam Graves 1992-93
Adam Graves 1993-94
Mark Messier 1994-95
Mark Messier 1995-96
Brian Leetch 1996-97
Wayne Gretzky 1997-98
Adam Graves 1998-99
Adam Graves 1999-00
Sandy McCarthy 2000-01
Sandy McCarthy 2001-02
Mathew Barnaby 2002-03
Jed Ortmeyer 2003-04
Henrik Lundqvist 2005-06
Jed Ortmeyer 2006-07
Brandon Dubinsky 2007-08
Ryan Callahan 2008-09
Ryan Callahan 2009-10
Brandon Prust 2010-11

edit: mods if you can, keep this open two days longer until 3/30--don't know if/how I can edit a poll.

I like seeing the five of the last six winners (and the son of a two time winner) are still with the team. And many of the other winners remain with the organization. Good job building a positive culture.

I could see Lundqvist getting it though.

Dan Girardi by a ridiculous margin.

Has been literally an All-Star this season, especially with Staal and Sauer out of the line-up. The guy has taken on huge minutes and has been an absolute stud on our blue-line.

Had to go with McD. His first full NHL season and he is asked to fill the huge void left by the Staal injury. He went way above and beyond expectations and is a major reason we are where we are IMO. Hasnt missed a game and averages almost 25 minutes a game.

Cally can win this award every year and deserve it, but I really feel this season McD has been the example of exactly what this award is all about.

S.M is extremely laughable....

anyway i say Callahan and Prust..the obvious options..id actually even say Prust. The guy plays hard in and out, defends team mates against anyone.Guy weighs about 195-200lbs drops the gloves to fight guys 240...

Not that cally doesnt play hard, the only difference is Cally scores.Prust kills penalties and blocks shots, always puts himself on the line....

Im on light duty at work now and my girlfriend tells me this morning since ill be sitting around doing nothing i can write love letters to prust,lol....so yeah Prust is my faorite ranger and callahan follows close behind.

I think Girardi gets it. He has certainly fulfills the "above and beyond the call of duty" mantra that the McDonald Extra Effort award demands.

I've been a little rough on Girardi in the past and I never thought he would play so well without Staal this season. Logging major minutes and sacrificing the body every night all while maintaining a consistent level of play is no easy task.

Despite Callahan's efforts game in and game out, I don't think he should win this. IMO it goes to either Bickel or Boyle. I know there are plenty of Bickel haters out there but the guy has really given it his all here doing everything that is asked of him and is playing well.

Boyle deserves this as well. He has busted his ass this year and many times has been a 1 man pk unit. I voted for Boyle but I think Stu Bickel deserves it as well.

The award has been split before. Would be fitting IMO for a Girardi and Mac split

Were you watching back then?

There wasn't a lot to choose from, and for a guy who was brought in to fight, he did that and chipped in double digit goals both seasons.

Sandy was a good guy for those two seasons. It was his third season that soiled his reputation here, when he decided he didn't need to play tough anymore.

Also, this is a tough yeah because EVERYONE is giving an extra effort. A great problem to have.

I give it to Boyle. There are others who work just as hard, but they tend to get their own accolades. Boyle is a little more unsung but takes just as much of a beating (if not worse) as everyone else.

Tough to choose just one, especially this year. It may be because he's so damn fast, but Hagelin is always flying out there on every shift. Went with him.

I can definitely see Girardi getting it. My personal vote would go out to Cally, but Girardi has nicely stepped up to play bigger minutes.

And until I see conclusive evidence that the puck hit Spezza, that goal is Danny's!

I think Boyle gets a lot of undeserved crap. I still would go with Girardi. Even so----Callahan 237 hits 76 blocked shots in 67 games. Boyle 211 hits and 79 blocked shots in 73 games. They are close in those categories. Brian also kills penalties well and has become maybe our best face-off guy. His offensive numbers are not what they were last year but he is a contributor--and I think when people give him **** it's not really fair.

Girardi has put in a lot of gutty performances over the last couple years for us. I think it's ****ing impressive. His time on ice--the blocked shots and hits. He plays a physical game but he hardly ever takes a penalty. That needs repeating 'he plays a physical game and he hardly ever takes a penalty.'--and a lot of people don't understand how valuable that is to a team. And he has some offense besides. Absolutely ****ing dependable--game in game out. To me he's almost like a poor man's Nicklas Lidstrom--in that he doesn't quite have that talent but he has a motor that can go all night long, he's sound positionally and he doesn't put you in man down situations. Smart player.
