Waiving of Russell is flexibility move. Little chance he is claimed (can't play for another team this season).
Mitchell also tweeting Derek Mackenzie close to returning, so no call-up.

Yes, because getting off this wreck of a team is probably the best thing for him. It's like Steve McQueen in the Great Escape. All of us who didnt make it out of the Stalag hope Russ' motorcycle makes it over the barbed wire.
I have no use for Russell, or for that matter, Boyce, or Byers, or Gillies, etc. etc.
S**t can every one of em.
I like Gillies, would like to see him back in the bottom six next season, but the rest I agree, don't bring anything to the team. I'll say one thing for Russ, he works hard, unfortunately this team needs much more than hard work.
I like Gillies too IMo he could be a very good bottom six player or a powerforward. But dont understand why Boyce and Russell had a spot in the roster. They are absolutely useless for us. AHL players without better potential they should never play NHL.
Agree with those of you who like Gillies. I'd have no problem with him being in our bottom 6 next season.
OK, seeing as how there will probably be no way in hell we are able to get rid of all of our dead weight, than I will go along with retaining Colton. Of all of them, he probably still has more up-side.
I must be the only one who actually is pleased with Russell's game. He'll always be a borderline guy, but he's done fairly well in the time he's been given as a defensive center.
Gillies I want to like, but man, he has hands of stone...kind of reminds me a bigger, slower version of CBJ Chimera. You kind of get glimpses of why he was a high pick from time to time, but the polish isn't there...maybe it's still within him. Boyce is a good energy guy, but I think we have enough of those. Should be interesting to see who sticks.
I dont understand why Russell is waived when he isnt sent back to AHL.
To Gillies, he is an ideal powerforward for me,he isnt speed but he is tall and is good in the front of the net. More selfconfidence, work in the preseason and we get a very good player for nothing.
