It's a little sad considering the suspension is going to do nothing but give Keith 5 days of rest before the playoffs while at the same time Daniel could miss the playoffs alltogether.
Many have probably heard this suggestion before, but a penalty for a hit like Keith's might be as follows: He stays out of the game as long as Daniel, and then once Daniel returns Keith would have to sit out a further 5 games.
There is no question that would take head shots out of the game.
Whether one would apply this to only head shots, or to any injury would be open to debate.
I'm mad that Keith isn't a repeat offender. 3rd flying elbow on record should have been a good 20 games, but for some reason he got a free pass on his earlier offenses. At least he will have to keep the bows down from now on.
Seriously though, with this ruling who doesn't get a first time non essential player to take Crosby out in a playoff series? And why in the world are playoff suspensions less? It just promotes players to take out stars to better there chance at winning the series. Should be a worse suspension in the playoffs in my opinion.

That's not really true considering it also cost him $500,000. He'll now be classified as a repeat offender, you can bet that he's going to watch himself because next time that could be $1m or more.

This is what i would like to see as well, the suspension matches the time lost to injury..but we all know the NHL would never do anything this radical.

I agree. They care more about the bottom line than player safety. The NHLPA and the Bettmanites ... er, owners.

That will never fly. What happens if a star player nails a plug just up from the AHL and the team milks the player's injury? What happens if that occurs in the playoffs?

I agree with this if there is a clear intent to inure - I believe that to be the case here. Also I think the NHL should follow the nba's lead and state clearly that the rules will protect all stars.
So hypothetically what would happen if Crosby got a similar elbow to the heading ending his career. Are they going to suspend some scrub 5 games for ending the career of the best player in the world? NHL has no understanding of how to protect its players. Absolutely no understanding in the slightest - guess they are just hoping that doesn't happen. Wish I had as much faith in the world as the NHL.
Next time the Hawks and Canucks play in the regular season, you can be pretty sure Keith is going to get absolutely run -- probably legally by someone like Kassian or Lapierre. They're going to hound him and make his life miserable. As long as they don't do anything stupid, I look forward to it.
I'd be fine seeing someone drop the gloves and force him to defend himself, too. Take the 2 and a game. Make sure everyone else in the league knows if you run the Sedins, you'll get yours too.

Excellent in theory but I'd be shocked and pleased if that happens.
Take away fighting rules. It won't stop it but it will help. Enforcers are needed.
Good point, just say hypothetically that Keith nailed Gretzky the way he did Daniel..Keith would be out longer then Gretz after Semenko got finished with him.
I was just over at the Hawks board checking out the comments and man, for a team that is missing their top player and captain to concussion issues, they just do not get it! It reminds me of the Boston mantra of "oh yeah, well at least we won the cup" to everything!
I think it's time to move on, send all positive vibes to Daniel, and focus on the task at hand. It's obvious that the Canucks will get nothing but hate from the League, the Media and other teams. "Circle the wagon" mentality and "Embrace the Hate" from me going forward! I didn't care about the President's Cup before this but now...

It was done with Bertuzzi (indefinite suspension and needed to apply to the Commish to be allowed back into the NHL)... and remember the howls of outrage from Canucks fans?
@walsha : Just heard story at my 9 yr old sons hockey practice, a player skated towards an opponent, gave him a chicken wing elbow to the front of his cage and said, "Look at me, I'm Duncan Keith."
