When I originally posed the question about Reilly Smith/Alex Chiasson coming straight to Dallas, I was obviously wondering if Dallas would do the same thing as St. Louis with Schwartz as well as what Anaheim was attempting to do with Justin Schultz.

I realize now, after looking at Zucker's b-day and remembering he was in the same draft as Schwartz, neither Schwartz or Zucker will actually burn a year on their ELC unless they play 10 NHL games. That will not happen in Zucker's case, but Schwartz could because of the playoffs in St. Louis.

Only Smith and Schultz would have (will) burn a year on their ELC by playing a single NHL game.

Still hasn't gotten his visa worked out. They're guessing the paperwork will be finished by Thursday. I'd say we might see him in Vancouver.

He's available tomorrow.

The Stars had an optional practice on Tuesday in Calgary, and the big word is that Reilly Smith is available to play Wednesday.

He has his received his work visa, and now it's a coach's decision.

Edmonton would be the perfect game to put him in too!

I dunno, the thing that Dallas has done well this year against Edmonton (even though they've looked ugly at times doing it) is grind out games with a low chance mindset and take all the air out of those young guns' sails. I guess the conventional knowledge is to break the kid in against one of the worst teams in the league, but I wonder if the style of play on Friday night in Vancouver wouldn't be more his speed.

You get him into the earliest game possible and let the chips fall where they may. If you're going to think it down to matchups of style and personnel you may as well have not signed him right now in the first place.

Thanks. Feel free to drop by frequently throughout next season if you feel like it.

I'm very glad Dallas is going to have at least one guy with the Brotherhood next year. I haven't really looked at your draft eligible recruits yet, but maybe Dallas will take a flyer on Reilly Smith's favorite freshman setup man Austin Czarnik (2nd year of eligibility). Although, it's a bit tough to imagine GMJN using a draft pick on a 5'8"/140 lbs. player. That sorta bucks Dallas' recent trend.

I guess Smith isn't so bad. So far his production is on par with Vincour.

Actually, as it stands now, smith is a ppg player in the NHL.

IDK .... I tried asking on Twitter ... Mark (ESPN) doesn't have it either.

Austin Smith, Alex Chiasson, and I noticed this morning Matej Stransky are all up.

I don't think however that Stransky's total info is there yet. His signing bonuses are more than 10% of his salary. I think his cap hit is too low, and we'll probably see some games played bonuses add.

Based on his reported signing bonuses, I'd assume his cap hit will come in ultimately around $750K to $775K.

I know Cap Geek typically takes some time to get all the bonus info correct, but they'll post what they have before hand.

Yea, was wondering about that. I just found it strange that Smith actually played in the NHL and they didn't have anything up. I'm just using Chiasson as a substitute for now, though.

That's smart. I pretty much count on Reilly getting the max salary as well with no A and B bonuses.

Oh, the details were never released? Does that have anything to do with the work visa, or are those unrelated?

I did that more because Chiasson was a higher pick, and it's doubtful that Smith's contract would exceed his.

I doubt it has anything to do with the work visa.

For the most part, draft position is not that important outside of the 1st round. Most players are going to get salaries based on their performance in juniors and NCAA at that point.

I'd expect Chiasson and Smith to get close if not identical offers.

For example, Jamie Benn was obviously one of the better junior prospect this team had. Despite being a 5th round pick, he got a max salary contract. Same goes for Austin Smith this season. He get's a max salary contract after lighting up the NCAA.

On the other hand, Colton Sceviour, a higher pick than Jamie and Austin, signs a deal for about $100K less than max plus a significant portion of the money is tied up in games played bonuses.

Never knew that. I focus more on the first round than anything, not really much past that.

Jackson's comments on R. Smith make it sound like he's probably going to the AHL which makes the whole burning a year debacle even more mystifying, if that was possible.
