Where does Justin Schultz sign? [MOD: All Schultz Talk]
Just wondering...is there even room for him on the New York blue? Seems like they already have a deep young blueline, with good young players like Erixon on the outside still.
Honestly, if I'm him, I'm looking for the best possible situation for success. That means a team that:
a) Has a hole on Defense
b) is either a team on the rise or a team that is a perennial playoff team
c) Has cap flexibility to allow for a potential payday
d) Has quality Defensive vets that would provide a guiding hand
e) Good development coaching (strong development track record)
f) a chance to start in the NHL right away
The teams that can check all or the majority of these criteria should be the frontrunners.
The best comparable to this situation is Blake Wheeler and under a much smaller cap his contract called for a 2.825 million dollar cap hit based on the incentives.
I'm just going by the following:
"Option 1 (Sign with Anaheim immediately after the Wisconsin season)
*2011-12: Aprox. $130,000 + $87,500 signing bonus
*2012-13: $875,000, with 10% up front signing bonus
*Restricted Free Agent: Summer of 2013
Option 2 (Choose your destination this summer)
*2012-13: $925,000, with 10% up front signing bonus
*2013-14: $925,000, with 10% up front signing bonus
*Restricted Free Agent: Summer of 2014"
Those are his salaries, he'll get bonuses on top of those.
He's in a position to negotiate his performance related bonuses down to reasonable levels that he will have a legit chance to achieve so if teams want to use the "bonus cushion" (if one exists in the next CBA) with him, they will do so at their own peril (see Chicago Blackhawks and Toews/Kane).
I'm sure most teams can say this, but I would love Schultz in Philly as a Matt Carle replacement. Playoff team 16 of last 17 years. Defensive holes. Willingness to spend to compete. Need a defensive prospect or 2 to match what they have up front. Learn from Kimmo Timmonen and possibly Chris Pronger.... seems a good fit.

Fabian Brunnstrum was 2.225 million.
He's a defenseman who was picked in the 2nd round, not a big reach to assume he wont hit any of his 'B' level bonuses. So its basically just games played and anything he negotiates with the team.
Won't be anywhere close to a $4m caphit unless he absolutely sets the league on fire.

There are different B level bonuses for defencemen, he's not going to need to hit 60 pts like a forward would.
As well his draft status is irrelevant, the guy has really developped well since being a second round pick, if that draft was re-done today he'd be picked ahead of a number of guys taken before him.
As a leaf fan, hopefully he signs in T.O, but realisticly there are many very good options out there for him. Almost every team would like to sign him, but where does he end up?
I'm not upset... it was just a comment on how the Leafs are always the "frontrunner" for every high profile FA, in the minds of leaf fans anyway.
We have no hope in signing parise/suter/weber etc, we do however have Jake Gardiner, who is Schultz's d partner in Wisonsin and is his best buddy. That will play a role.

Minnesota has A, C and F on lock; as for the others, it depends on how loosely you want to interperet "team on the rise" and "defensive vets".
