This happens all the time in hockey, remember when Sergei Gonchar signed a minute into free agency last season. I wonder how they got a deal done so quick

And with on 1 year to learn a new system, adjust to the NHL and work his way up the team D chart to put up quality numbers that show deserves a big contract. Tough if you can't show it was a repeated season not a fluke and terrible if you have a slow season.

a slow season

I guess Yzerman will be on this, just like he was on JT Brown

So if he as going to sign with the Ducks I don't see why he wouldn't have already.

Now he has all the reason to not sign before July 1st is because if he does, the max he can sign for is $875,000. If he signs July 1st or after he gets a max of 925,000.
Ducks fans will now be hoping that it's Schultz's intention to remain in college for his final year and that's why he's not signed. Their next target date will be June 1st - by when he has to declare whether he's returning to college or turning pro... until then, they still won't be convinced that he's going elsewhere.

Give it a rest. Most of us expect him to leave.

Bob McKenzie had something about it and he's a very reputable reporter.

But I've heard that NYR might be the favorites.

Because they have a young core of star forwards in the same age group and a number of spots available to earn in their starting line-up. He has an opportunity to grow with an up and coming franchise. They don't think he'll sign in Edmonton. They think that it's probably the best fit for him. Hopefully he and his agent see it that way too.

Maybe because of @UWChuckSchwartz Tweet

Can you imagine the Oilers roster next year if they can add Justin Schultz along with Nail Yakupov? Very scary future in Edmonton.

I tell you the growth the Oilers forwards will be a challenge. How can/will they afford this core? I can not imagine the CAP going up. So to resign them will not be the issue but how do you fill your holes? The first impressions I have about Edmonton is scoring 3-4 goals because of the offensive power but getting 4-5 with the defense they have. Honestly I can not see the Oilers winning the cup until the salary preassure begins.

Anyway. Based on your argument the Ducks are also a interessting team. They have a better core and beside the stardom they are in transition mode. With Palmeri, Holland, Etem, DSP, Vatanen and Vatanen there are strong young players in his age coming up. The big advantage here would be that Justin does not have to be the star at D. Looking at the one in Edmonton I think he has to.

Overall as a Ducks fan and a huge admirer of Justin over the years I'm really upset if he leaves and most of the sign lead to this direction. I think he fits perfectly here. The team even made room for him. He can player here now. When a canadian media states "they build a dynasty defense there" and you can be a big part of it it's really a strong point IMO. Well Justin seems to have other ones.

It goes on to talk about the Oilers' chances at him, but that's not too surprising since its an Edmonton paper. They also mixed up Schultz's first name.

Wow, I didn't know that their were so many MBAs on this forum. When, in the post-lockout era, has one of the wealthiest NHL teams have to let go of a young star due to cap reasons?

when you have way too much of them you can not hold all of them.

McKenzie said it as part of The Quiz, where he had to pick from four destinations for Schultz (Oilers, Wings, Leafs and one more).

So McKenzie didn't say Edmonton are the favorite to sign him. Just that if he had to pick one of those four teams, he would guess Oilers.

I suspect the usual teams will get a good crack at him, aka LA, NYR, Detroit, and Vancouver. However, Edmonton is in the position to offer him lots of money, ice-time, and the hopefully a promising future.

What exactly is the difference to the Ducks? They can offer him the same!

And the Penguins arguably the best group of all. All mystery for now, Schultz is giving nothing away.

I don't get why the pens aren't in the running except for family or personal reasons. Fantastic forwards and goalie... decent defense, but definitely a spot available. Seems like a great fit to me.

You could make a case for any team in the league. Quite honestly it's dumbfounding why/if he doesn't want to sign in Anaheim. People keep saying "he could play big mins right now". He could do that here. We have a great young core with one of the best prospect groups in the league, and we drafted him. The only team that makes more sense then us is Vancover, due to family reasons.

Money is limited since it will be an ELC.
Ice-time will probably be the same in Vancouver, Anaheim and Toronto.

I read that an NHL agent said if Schultz was his client he would be advising him to sign with the Oilers because of all the talent up front. He would be playing prime PP minutes and would rack up the points leading to a nice contract.

I don't have a link, I can't remember where I read that.
