after watching him in the one game vs minn this year i thought this kid was great. Showed speed and skill... Stuff we need... Bjugstad could use another year or 2 at minn. I'd rather see Bjug get stronger and more trusting of his skills... Now Rau!! love that we drafted this kid.. I feel he is future captain material.

co-insides with us starting a new quarter here at DU. I'm disappointed he won't finish his senior season. Really nice kid even though I like his brother better

Good signing, good player, very nice kid.

Good luck Drew

This is excellent excellent news! I thought that the "knows everything" Canadian media said that this definitely wasn't going to happen I think the kid's going to be great in Florida and be a real impact player on the horizon for us.

Great signing and thank god he decided to forgo his senior season, if he plays well in Sa this season he could have a shot at the roster next year

Just out of curiosity, can someone tell me about our prospects? I know who they are but if you had to compare them to current NHL players, who would they remind you of?? Is there anyone who can be as dynamic as a Crosby or Ovy? Is there anyone who could be a 40-50 goal scorer?
Thanks

No one near Crosby or Ovy.

Drew Shore projects to be a strong two way #2 center that can do it all. Score, pass, backcheck and isn't soft.

We don't have too many scorers on our prospect list.

Rocco might be a 30/35+Goal player, but he has a long road ahead of him.

I'm hoping Huberdeau can be a Giroux type player, but I haven't watched him play a lot.

Well, it's good to get him in the fold. There probably wasn't much benefit to him playing another season in college. And now this will force him to play a more pro-style game, which he needs to do. This will probably speed up his development and soften up the edges in his game faster.

There is no one in the Florida system that looks elite right now, at least not in the Crosby/Ovechkin sense (keep in mind that there is maybe one or two players in the world now that would qualify). I don't like to do comparisons to NHLers, primarily because you can pick out one aspect of the player and compare, but that leaves too many comparisons that fail, and it gets messy really fast.

Huberdeau easily has the best offensive potential in the Florida pipeline. Based on rudimentary statistical projections, you could assume 25-30 goals, 35-40 assists from Huberdeau. I think he scoring will be based more on what he's asked to do. If he's on the wing and told to fill the net, he can. If he's at center and told to distribute, he can. With the Panthers system and current roster, I'd have to believe that they'll want him shooting.

The next best goal scorer is probably Grimaldi, but as mentioned, we'll all have to wait another year to see.

After Rocco, Bjugstad is the most likely goal scorer. He's so big and strong on his skates, and has a variety of shots (though I'd like to see him with a quicker release on his snap shot). He's been effective along the left-wing circle where he typically plays on the Minny powerplay, but most of his NHL goals will likely come in front of the net. The thing I think Bjugstad does really well is use his body to make space, create turnovers, or protect the puck. He has great positional awareness and sense of the physical space his body occupies, and uses that well. It is really hard to get the puck away from him, and his board play is solid.

Drew Shore can score, but I see him more as a guy who changes the speed of the game. He is the guy who looks for opportunities, either offensively, defensively, or in the neutral zone, and plays a good transitional game. He doesn't have a world-class shot, but it's deceptive, and he seems really adept at collecting rebounds and spotting his shots well. I think his best attribute is his hockey sense, which I think might make him a really good 3rd-line center in the NHL. If he can develop his offense a bit more in the pro ranks, he could be a good 2nd-line center.

Although we'll have to be patient, I think Yaroslav Kosov is another guy that could become a legitimate threat in the NHL. I keep hearing really good things about him. I know his totals don't look all that good right now (4 goals and 5 assists in 27 games) but the truth is that he's young and playing in the KHL for a team with Hall of Famers in the lineup.

Anyway, that was a quick snapshot. My review of the college and European players should be up on the HF Panthers site soon (maybe today). You can read more there, and I'm always available for questions, comments, etc.

Its funny that you pick these two (Im guessing its from the post you replied to). Crosby might be a hit away from going the way of the Lindros and Ovechkin has been streaky. Id pick Stamkos as the new elite myself.

I was referring back to the original post, but as long as Sid is putting on skates, he is the benchmark player in the NHL.

Stamkos is great, don't get me wrong, but Sid is in a different class.
