#77 | SABRES at CAPITALS | TUE MAR 27 | 7:00PM ET

GDT#77: SABRES (37-29-10) at CAPITALS (38-30-8) – TUE MAR 27 – 7:00PM ET – MSG-B, CSN-MA (Full Story)

(AP) – Impressive as the Buffalo Sabres' two-month charge out of the cellar and into the playoff hunt has been,
defenseman Robyn Regehr knows their job is far from complete.

The Sabres remain on the outside looking in and now have a recharged Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals standing in
their way in a critical late-season showdown at Washington on Tuesday.

"Well, we haven't done anything yet, really," Regehr said after practice Monday. "It's another step tomorrow."

That doesn't mean he and his teammates aren't excited to be in this position after they were essentially counted out in
January. Appreciating how much adversity - questions of character, a rash of injuries, including coach Lindy Ruff's
three broken ribs, and a franchise-worst road skid - the Sabres have already overcome, Regehr had difficulty
quantifying how significant the game against the Capitals is.

"I think to call it a big game is an understatement," Regehr said. "There's just so much on the line."

The mood is no different in Washington. The Capitals were already looking ahead to facing Buffalo shortly after they
nudged the Sabres out of the Eastern Conference's eighth and final playoff spot with a 3-0 win over Minnesota on
Sunday.

"It's going to be like a playoff game," Jason Chimera said. "Both teams need it and it's going to be a fun game to play
in."

Though the two teams' playoff fates won't be decided on Tuesday, the winner will earn an edge in a race that's
expected to continue over the final 12 days of the season.

Both teams enter Tuesday with 84 points and six games left.

The Capitals (38-30-8) also find themselves in the race to win the Southeast Division title, sitting three points behind
Florida.

The Sabres (37-29-10) have much more at stake.
SABRES FACE CAPS IN BIGGEST GAME YET (Full Story)

(Buffalo News) – There are a few facts to get out of the way about the Sabres' game in Washington tonight:

* There will be other games. In fact, both Buffalo and the Capitals will have five more.

* It is not a win-or-else situation. The loser still has a chance to make the playoffs.

OK, now that the formalities are done, let's get to the hype:

* This is the most important game on the schedule for Buffalo and Washington. No other regular-season contest, past
or future, is expected to have a more tangible impact on the standings than the showdown between the teams tied for
eighth place.

* The loser's chance at the playoffs will be diminished. A loss in Verizon Center won't be a death knell by any means,
but it will feel like a karate chop to the temple.

Most of the people involved are embracing the hype side of the equation.

"To say it's a big game is an understatement," Sabres defenseman Robyn Regehr said Monday. "It's the biggest game
that we've faced all year."

"This is the biggest game there is," Buffalo blue-liner Christian Ehrhoff said. "We're both in eighth spot, and the winner
is going to have sole possession. That's where we want to be."
HOLTBY PARKED OVERTIME IN CAPS' CREASE (Full Story)

(Buffalo News) – Braden Holtby figured he'd be in Washington for only a few days. Capitals starting goaltender Tomas
Vokoun felt a twinge in his groin on St. Patrick's Day, so the team summoned Holtby from minor-league Hershey as a
precaution. Upon leaving Pennsylvania, the goalie parked his vehicle in the daily garage, eschewing the economy lot
because he'd be back to the airport soon.

Now that Holtby is parked in the Capitals' crease, his car is on its 10th day of racking up big charges. It's a price he's
willing to pay.

Holtby is 2-0-1 with a 1.30 goals-against average and .955 save percentage since the call-up, numbers that have
boosted the Capitals' confidence in the rookie. The team is expected to start him again tonight when the Buffalo
Sabres visit Verizon Center in a showdown for eighth place.

"I would anticipate we get him," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said Monday. "He's played very good for them the last two
games I've seen."

The 22-year-old blanked Minnesota on Sunday with 28 saves. Holtby is 12-3-3 with a 1.90 and .932 during his call-ups
the last two seasons.

"When I get up here it's even better because it's a playoff race," Holtby told reporters in Washington. "It's more fun to
come to the rink. It's what us hockey players live for."
ALEX OVECHKIN'S WELL-TIMED RETURN TO FORM (Full Story)

(Washington Post) – Alex Ovechkin has teased everyone before.

He’s had stretches the past two seasons in which he reminded us of the ebullient star who lit up the NHL from 2005-
2010, only to disappoint as he disappeared again.

But this feels different, doesn’t it?

For one, Ovechkin’s recent goal-scoring splurge has been sustained over the course of two weeks. It’s also coincided
with the Capitals’ struggle to secure a spot in the playoffs.

Beginning with his overtime winner against the Lightning on March 8, he's produced nine goals in seven games, or 43
percent of the team’s offensive output during that span.

The 10 goals he’s recorded in March, in fact, are the most Ovechkin has mustered in a single month since he notched
14 in Oct. 2009, while the five-game goal scoring streak is his longest since Jan. 31-Feb. 7 2010.

And although he remains on pace for the lowest point total in his career, he's reemerged on the league leaders list for
goals, vaulting into a tie for fourth place with the Maple Leafs’ Phil Kessel, just one behind the Rangers’ Marian Gaborik
for third.

Now the question is whether Ovechkin can boost the Capitals past Ryan Miller and the surging Sabres, who have won
four in a row and gained points in eight straight (6-0-2).

BUFFALO SABRES

Lineup News & Notes (News)

Above, LW1 is #82 Marcus Foligno and RW4 is #36 Patrick Kaleta. Matt Ellis (MCL), Nathan Gerbe (upper body) and
Patrick Kaleta (hand) were scratched in Buffalo's last game, a 3-1 win over Minnesota on Saturday night. Jochen
Hecht (concussion) also missed Saturday's game and remains out indefinitely along with Ellis. Gerbe and Kaleta are
game-time decisons for tonight's game. The Sabres will start Ryan Miller in goal tonight against the Caps.

Weekly Transactions

Buffalo recalled Travis Turnbull from AHL/Rochester on an emergency basis last Tuesday and was returned today.

According to the Stats

Buffalo are: 30-3-2 when allowing two or fewer goals; 28-4-4 when scoring three or more; 21-4-6 when Derek Roy
records a point; 20-4-1 when Christian Ehrhoff records a point; 13-1-5 when Tyler Ennis records a point; and 7-1-2 in
their last ten games.

WASHINGTON CAPITALS

Lineup News & Notes (News)

John Erskine (lower body), Jeff Halpern, Tomas Vokoun (groin) and Joel Ward (foot) were scratched in Washington's
last game, a 3-0 shutout win over Minnesota on Sunday. Nicklas Backstrom (concussion) and Tom Poti (groin) also
missed Sunday's game. Ward skated for the first time yesterday since brusing his foot last Thursday and is listed as
day-to-day. The Caps will start Braden Holtby in goal tonight versus the Sabres.

Weekly Transactions

Washington recalled Cody Eakin from AHL/Hershey on Friday, returning him Saturday.

According to the Stats

Washington are: 16-7-2 in their last 25 home games; and 6-2-2 in their last ten games.

This going to be a playoff-equal game, and to me, it feels like a playoff game. It's in our hands. I'm so excited.

The Sabres, who have an afternoon flight to D.C., will have wingers Nathan Gerbe (upper body) and Patrick Kaleta (thumb) at their disposal. Both have been cleared to play, and Ruff will decide Tuesday whether to use them.

Hopefully Gerbe and Kaleta are healed enough for Ruff to use them. My only gripe with the team's play the last couple of weeks has been the performance of the 4th line, which has downright sucked (in spite of Turnbull's timely goal against the Rangers).

I went to a game against the Caps a few years ago when the Sabres put up something like 6 goals in the first 11 minutes, and coasted to victory. Anyone remember that game?

That would be nice.

Typical buffalo let down game. Only question is will it be a caps blowout 5-1, a blow 3 goal lead, or a late game goal which causes us to lose.

Anyone else going tonight?

Sabres have only two regulation losses in their last EIGHTEEN games. I don't expect that to start now.

Everyone and their momma knows how important this game is. Who would've thought back in feb we would be playing for the playoffs?

Ruff wanted to win all 10. He's won 4. Keep the streak going tonight! I like our chances against washingtons 'd'.

I think they get on Miller early and the crowd takes over from there.

edit: 'Nucks fans keep saying Hodgson makes clutch goals in games like these....let's hope they are right.
