Trust me, Alex Galchenyuk would want to be there for sure. He's a competitor and loves to win.
He was either not picked by USA Hockey or was advised not to play and risk re-injury. But, as a player (especially one that missed the season with injury) Alex would love to play more hockey
Not going for the chance at hurting his draft stock doesn't make sense. That's not a concern for a player like Galchenyuk.
I'm really starting to think Galchenyuk's ineligible to play for the US.
Isn't this like the 2nd or 3rd IIHF tournament he's been surprisingly omitted from? Yet the one he played in was non-IIHF sanctioned Ivan Hlinka.
It's not a surprise at all to see Mantha named. I'm a bit shocked no one was expecting him, to be honest. 6'3 power forward who went PPG in a 4 game series (for the losing team). He started the season slowly but has been absolutely on fire, producing at a 2PPG pace over the last 13 games of the year (13gp; 14g-12a-26p). It would take quite a bit to compile stats, but I'm pretty sure he's been in the top 5 in Q scoring over that stretch. Not bad for a kid only eligible in 2013 (Missed this year's draft by a day)

28 points in his last 16 games, I'd have to compute the rest of the league though to make the comparison
sorry, didn't notice you put his stats for the last 13gp there

It's been said by more than one source from USA Hockey on multiple occasions that Galchenyuk is eligible to compete for the U.S. in IIHF sanctioned events. Either he declined an invite or USA Hockey declined to invite him.
how often does the usa draw players from outside the NTDP for the u-18s? i thought this tournament was just for them and they used the ivan hlinka for other players.

They sometimes do it. Two years ago they had Austin Watson, who at the time was playing for Peterborough. There were a couple of other non-NTDP players on that team as well I believe, Connor Brickley was another.
Last year it was all U18 and U17 NTDP guys. I would consider it another year of all NTDP guys because O'Regan has already played seven games for the NTDP.

The only way that would be possible is if he found out he was IIHF ineligible after the Ivan Hlinka but as Rabid points out, multiple sources within USA Hockey have confirmed that he is indeed IIHF eligible for Team USA. There's zero chance he would bother representing Team USA in the meaningless Ivan Hlinka knowing he couldn't represent them going forward. He would have just played for Russia if that was his only option.
This is realistically the 1st IIHF tournament he's been passed over for. You could say 2 if you counted last year's tournament as well but it's an extreme stretch to consider last year a snub. If I remember correctly, USA Hockey has only added an underage player for this tournament, from outside the NTDP, once in its history and that was Patrick O'Sullivan from Mississauga for the 2002 tournament - and he had been with the NTDP U17 team the year before as an underage player.
If Galchenyuk wanted to play and they didn't take him, it's idiotic. I get that they're also rewarding guys for their commitment but that doesn't stop them from shipping guys that have been there for 2 years like Miles Koules, Brendan Silk, and Gavin Stoick to the U17 team to miss the tournament.
You don't add a Danny O'Regan to your team a few weeks ago when you could possibly have Galchenyuk later on. O'Regan would have joined them now had Alex not been available. Especially on a team that's struggled to score all year. For the sake of my opinion of those in charge at USA Hockey, I really hope they pursued him but Galchenyuk declined to not risk injury or something tied to that.

Canada is starting to take form. Obviously Bourke, Mantha and Carrier are on the team. So is goaltender Brandon Whitney.
Quote:
Brandon Whitney has been the first goaltender named that will represent Canada at the World Under-18 Championship in the Czech Republic later this month.

For NA hockey fans Blugers is the main star of the team, but the first 4 MHL-A forwards on the list are very talented as well, probably have a chance at being late NHL draft picks. Merzlikins is the frontrunner for #1 GK job and may steal a game against the Swiss or Germans. D is our weak spot, I have no idea how good Kalvitis & Bazevichs are.
