Leafs need a #1 goalie in the off season

What would it take to get Luongo if he doesn't bring the Cup to Van City this year?

MacArthur + Schenn + ????

What more would it take?

I doubt Burke adds a 1st nor do I feel Luongo would warrant one with the above mentioned package (starter) and his cap hit. Not many teams could take his contract on.

Thoughts?

edit: there's already a thread about Schneider/Tor.

Khabi, Vokoun, Elliot, Schneider, UFA/AHL seem like your only options

This one is for Luongo....

I believe Vancouver would rather hold onto Schneider as he's a heck of a lot cheaper than Luongo and putting up great numbers. I think if they could find a suitor willing to take on Luongo's cap hit and his short comings they'd send him packing.

His caphit at 5.3 is a steal for a top-5 goalie in the league and Vezina finalist last year.

Add Gardiner and your 2012 first to that package and you may start to come close in value.

He isn't being traded, period.

Schneider with term (4 or 5 years) will be looking at probably 4M - 5M so even best case scenario you're only saving around $1M over Luongo.

Even if they wanted to make this trade, wouldn't Luongo have to waive his NTC to make it happen?

I could see the Sharks moving Niemi if they don't win the cup again (which is unlikely at this point).

Not saying he's the 'best' option, but he's stable and reliable (and young and healthy).

Sharks have a backlog of goalies at the moment too.

Blues not going to trade Elliott w/o getting a quality backup in return. Seeing as it is highly doubtful one will do what Elliott has done, and the importance of Goaltending to the Blues, it is highly unlikely that Elliott is traded.

Ahh, so his cap hit is 5.3, but he's actually being paid 6.714. Gotcha.

Well the length of his contract and his inconsistent play are a huge concern. Let's see how he fares in this years playoffs. That will go a long way to telling if Luongo is top 5 or too inconsistent to be trusted.

Niemi may be available if he falters in the playoffs again. Cap hit 3.8 for 3 more years. Not a great goalie but a decent option.

If Gardiner and out 2012 1st is going, Kesler and Edler are coming back in a package. We are not adding too much.

I can see the Leafs signing Harding or Vokoun this summer

Loungo would never waive for Toronto anyways. If he thinks there is pressure in Van, then the toronto media would wreck him. Plus he wants to play for a contender not a pretender...

that 5.3 means NOTHING considering he's signed on until 2022!
i flipping hate those types of contracts. so stupid.

i wouldnt touch him and CERTAINLY not for the package you want.
sounds like both sides say no deal

Considering the money payment of his deal, who honestly thinks he honors his entire deal? Not to mention the changes to his NTC later on in his deal are designed so that even if he doesn't retire he can be traded or demoted to the minors if his play doesn't justify his cap hit. Everyone talks about the term of the deal, etc but its NOT a 35+ deal where the cap hit stays even if he retires/is in the minors/etc.

As far as package is concern, expect the asking price to be higher than Cory. There's a reason he's currently the #1 here. Also note that MG has NEVER asked anyone on the team to waive his NTC and has being on record saying he wouldn't because he has been on the other side. Meaning odds of Luongo getting moved (unless he wants to) is very unlikely until the first window in his contract (which is summer of uhhh... i think 2014? don't remember).

Basically if Luongo gets traded, its likely because he wants out due to either media pressure or being closer to his family. Either case, it wouldn't be to Tor but rather Tampa or Florida.

If Calgary misses the playoffs(almost a a sure thing), Feaster will probably look to move out another core member and so Kipper could be available for much less than Luo.

the problem is the price it would take for Kipper ... but he's still a top goalie imho ... but i dont see why we would get a 36 year old goalie when we arent even close to being a contender yet

He has a few years left and I don't think his value is as high as fellow flame fans believe.

I doubt Gillis will help Burke out, those two don't like each other much. I wouldn't mind a deal around Ashton + for Luongo but I really doubt Gillis will help Toronto make the playoffs.

In terms of value I think they would want more than they gave up for him.

Edit: I don't think he was signed when they traded for him so a **** ton.

Trust me, there is no trade Leafs fans would make that brings back Halak.
