Pominville was the right choice for captain

Just giving a little to Ruff for his decision on this one and Pominville for living up to it. Poms has been the heart and soul of the team, their best player by a country mile, a guy who leads by example and always says the right things. On his way to an incredibly consistent 30 goals and 70 points. And what he did tonight against Ovechkin reminded me of all those big goals our last full-time offensive captains scored in their time here.

Regardless of what happens the rest of the season, I'm eminently impressed. Well done, Jason.

He hasn't let it go to his head, and he's one of the most consistent players in the league. And we are talking about a job that is one of the hardest in the world to be consistent at. The competition is grueling, punishing, and mentally draining but he's there every day to be lighthouse of positive examples. I had my doubts (let's face it, I doubt EVERYTHING), but today I'm proud to call him my teams Captain.

It's really pushed his performance individually, which is something that we saw happen when he'd get the C when it was rotated. I had my doubts about his ability to drive others, but it seems like he's grown into it.

Here to eat a little bit of crow. Poms has definitely elevated his game, and I'd like to think that part of the turnaround this season is due to his influence.

Save a little for me, please.

Yeah, I was very wrong about Poms. And happily so.

Pommers is great...probably the most underrated player in the league.

Poms has been a rock this year. The only consistent player this whole year and he plays hard every night. I'll remember his short hander vs Ovi for a while, that was nice.

He does with respect and class. He carries himself like a Sakic or Lidstrom type of captain.

Poms has usually done quite well when given a letter and when it counts. I'm not shocked but pleasantly surprised at the same time.

He's developing into a really good captain. As far as I'm concerned, he had better be captain next season as well.

Only Pomminville doesn't shoot at players during the playoffs at the end of a period...

...until the next slump.

Seriously though, I have no issue with a captain who leads by example and hard work. He clearly takes the letter with a great deal of commitment and professionalism in his play as his production has born out while wearing it.

Only problem I got with Pommer is that I wish he was more physical, just throw a check occasionally!!!

I can't imagine this team with Vanek as captain. I'm glad Ruff chose Pommer, he is calm collected and CLUTCH. I was fine with either Pommer or Vanek, but Pommer is the clear consensus now. Where all the people who were ragging on Pommer saying he's a bad captain cause he's not physical??

no question about it. funny (sad?) part is - there really were no other viable candidates.

i can't even imagine what would have been said about captain tom vanish during his latest slump.

I wouldn't have had a problem with Vanek as captain. I don't see any problem at all with a skill player going through slumps, especially when it's injury induced for a player that regularly pays the price for getting dirty around the crease. Vanek is all heart, a Paul O'Niell type that wears his heart on his sleave and that doesn't bother me one bit. Some people complain because the team seems to have a lack of passion. Nobody can accuse Vanek of that.

That said, I knew all along it would be Pominville because he's the "consumate professional", plays the smartest two way game, and can be on the ice in any game situation. He might speak as blandly as cardboard box, but just because that's not my style doesn't mean it can't work for him. Who knows how he speaks with the team behind closed doors anyway? He's been a solid/great teammate by all accounts, so I don't see any reason he shouldn't be a good captain for the duration of his contract and probably longer.

Pomminville is easily the most likeable guy on the team.

Still, he's so nice though it seems, how effective can he possibly be in the lockeroom? Love to be a fly on the wall for heated moments in there.

Is there a chance he turns into Moose Messier when the press is gone and the door is closed---and he shoves Mike Webers head in the toilet for a turnover?

Whenever he's in the middle of a scrum, like last night, I always wonder WTF he is saying to the other team! Do you think he uses the "F" word? I just can't see it!

Man, I like Pommers, but Alfie is money. He is super clutch. Can't tell you how many times I've been watching a Sens game where they were down a goal and needed a last-minute score to stay alive or win...and this friggin Alfie nails it. It's happened time and time and time again.

One time there was 11 secons left and a faceoff in the offensive zone. Sens needed a goal to stay alive. Right before the drop, I told my son "Alfie is gonna score here"...and sure enough, BAM...in the net. Unreal.

Still, whenever we're playing hockey and one of us gets a goal immediately in response to being scored on, we call it a "Pomminville".
