The "Your team has never won a cup" argument is stupid

So I was talking with this guy who decided, after I told him I was a Sens fan, that he should immediately state that we have never won the cup and that we are less of a team because the leafs got a cup way back in the 60's.

This bothers me to NO end, How can someone claim that their team is better when the team they are specifically insulting have not been around as long as they have been in a cup drought. And I see it all the time, same thing with habs fans.

The way I see it, Every damn Canadian team is even with the Sens in regards with Cups if we go solely to the new existence of the team of course with the Habs being the last to win a cup but Ottawa has had some awesome seasons and I don't believe they should get so much disrespect from other Canadian team.

Anyone else hate this?

You only think it is stupid because your team has never won a cup.

It's okay, I've been wrong before too. It happens to everyone.

Ottawa is kind of a different story because the team hasn't existed for a relatively long time.

It only matters if you are alive when it happens and you are old enough to remember it.

My buddy is 40 and he says the Habs have 24 Cups, I say he can really remember only 2 in 86 and 93.

The Cup argument is simply fan trolling. Thing is, it usually works.

How else will Calgary and Edmonton defend themselves against Canuck fans?

Our new argument is now "At least we got to the finals in the past 10 years"

Sorry Habs and Leafs.

Don't worry OP, you'll feel differently once the Senators win a cup.

Then you can pick on the Canucks fans!

Leafs fan was just glad he finally ran into somebody he could talk smack with regarding winning the Stanley Cup.

How sad is it that the Senators have won a league championship more recently than the Cubs?

You should tell him that the Senators won the cup before the Leafs ever did.

The argument expires when the team misses the playoffs.

As of right now, the only teams that can say "my team won the cup and that's why they are better than yours" is DET, PIT, CHI and BOS

Meh, whether or not those past Ottawa Cups count or not, it means nothing to me. I just want to be alive to see my team win.

My team has never won a Cup so we're irrelevant. Self-trolled.

It only makes me mad if the fan throwing the Cup win in your face wasn't alive to experience the Cup win. I think as a fan you can be proud of your team winning the Cup regardless of the year but shouldn't be able to use it in an argument. That's just my thoughts.

Well...anyone who uses it to imply that their team is inherently better is being dumb.

But when a Kings fan tries to convince me that the Kings are this long and storied franchise and the Ducks are the joke of the NHL or whatever (extreme examples) I really feel I have no choice but to say, 40 years...where's your cup?

In 40 years their team made it to the cup finals once and got trashed by Montreal and they've won their division once. Granted, Anaheim only won the division once as well, but in 15 years we won our division, made the Stanley Cup finals twice, Western conference finals 3 times and won the cup.

In a situation where my franchise is ridiculed I can't help but ask why even with Wayne Gretzky they couldn't win.

In general I never use the argument. At times I forget that we were cup winners 5 years ago. It took a whole year for it to really settle in as a fact.

It's no Billy Goat, but... http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/sh...d.php?t=329869

Pretty weird how we made the finals that season though.

Being a sens fan, I hear this constantly. But I could care less. I've seen my team make it to the SCF, I've seen them play well in a capped system.

As long as my team is exciting while I watch, I'm happy,

That's my rule too, although, being a Minnesota sports fan, it doesn't matter much.

It's a stupid argument, but it makes a lot of fans sleep better at night and it's all that matters.
