Lets Play a Game...

The rules are simple

No trade proposals
No Kessel VS Seguin rants
No mention of Burke, regardless of your opinion of the job he's done.

Part 1
Give us 5 names you want to see in a Leafs uni come training camp, and why.
Part 2
Give us a (the) name(s) of the guy(s) who get(s) replaced.

1. Vokoun
2. Parise
3. Hartnell
4. JVR
5. Kyle Beach

1. We need a veteran goalie. Without a reliable backstop, we go nowhere. Would have preferred Nabokov, but he's locked up. No more young guys assuming the number one spot. I want to see Reimer force the issue and steal starts from a veteran. Gus out, Vokoun in. We play with confidence when we believe the guy in goal can give you a chance to win.

2. I don't think you can get what you paid for Kessel. So you have to maximize the asset and make him more effective. He and Parise could be nearly as dynamic as the Sedins, Kane and Toews, etc. Its either a matter of getting Kessel the guy he needs to win with or flip him to the highest bidder. He doesn't really replace anyone, because theres nobody deserving of the title at this time. Bozak gets reassigned. For Parise, I make the exception and give him the big money, long term deal he warrants, before your competition does. 7 mil, 7 years. His natural position may be wing, but I think he's likely a better 1C option than anyone currently in the lineup...

3. We will never get him, but you need a guy with some piss and vinegar, some courage, and some top 6 skills. I don't see anyone showing the kind of pride or swagger this guy brings, every night. We need a fan favourite who can piss off the opposition, and put the puck in the net. Above all, we need some real character. Kulemin, Cmac, Colby all become trade bait...

4. JVR. We need to get our hands on another big body who can play with courage in a top 6 role. Someone who can do some damage in front of the net and outwork guys down low, and then FINISH. I love the effort by guys like Crabb, Frattin, Steckel, Ashton, etc. And clearly, Carlyle does. But we need someone to put the puck in with more regularity, and create some serious traffic down low. JVR doesn't mind going to the net, and he's got hands. Paired with Colborne at some point in the next season or two, they could be hard to contain, with a nice mix of size and soft hands. Kulemin, Cmac are spare parts the minute we see a player like JVR in blue and white.

5. Kyle Beach might be had for cheap. High end skills, size, and attitude. Not a lock to ever live up to the hype but he's worth taking a flier on. He could be a Bertuzzi or he could be a bigger Steve Downie. Or he could be a guy that pushes the likes of Biggs, Broll, Ross and Ashton to compete harder for a spot. The shoulder surgery knocked his stock down a peg or two on CHI's depth charts, meaning he might be a guy we could use, and pick up.

To summarize, we need a real goalie. Someone to do what Cujo and Belfour once did. We need a legit 1C that maximizes the investment made in Kessel, and a guy with Parise's skills doesn't need to be 6'5. He's gutsy, and he can fly. We need a character leader fan favourite type guy to rally the troops and keep the opposition honest. A high end young power forward with soft hands is even better than a high draft pick for me, as he has all the attributes and fewer rough edges. A player like that also knows the requirements of NHL level competition, and stands a better chance of being an impact player sooner than later. finally, we need another skilled shift disturber to bring out the worst and the best in similarly skilled players. Its not all X's and 0's; and its not just a matter of padding the lineup with first rounders. You need character, attitude and pride. And we are lacking in all three it seems.

I wonder if we can get Matt Duchene out of Colorado? He's having a hell of a time with injuries and subpar production and the Avs have Gabriel Landeskog lighting it up. Think of him as the new Paul Stastny target, if you will.

Get a goalie? How about Jose Theodore? Let's say Florida makes room for Markstrom, he'd be a nice temporary veteran number one, and he's used to big market pressures, coming from Montreal and whatnot.

I think Stastny would be the one they'd be looking to move if anyone. Duchene isn't having a great year but he's still so young and has so much potential. O'Reilly and Duchene is a great 1-2 punch to go forward with into the future.

No way we're getting Duchene, he's their future #1 C; Landeskog is a winger I believe. Paul Stastny is still a possibility and for much cheaper compared to what we would have to give up for Duchene.

Theodore aint a bad option at all, and you're right on about handling the pressure. Duchene and Landeskog are pretty much the future of that club, but I think it behooves Burke to try every available option in the off season, even the unlikely ones.

How about Kari Lehtonen? Absolute backbone in Dallas, always liked his athleticism and potential, though he was frustrating in Atlanta. He's only 29, so barely older than Gustavsson, who is still considered 'young'. He's a free agent at the end of next season and Dallas seems kind of broke ass these days. I'd look into giving them a Colborne + type package if we can get Galchenyuk or Grigorenko at the draft, and Jumbo Joe doesn't look so promising anymore.

If I were to make 5 substitutions that did not involve the loss of valuable assets:

Drop Gustavsson, sign Vokoun/Harding
Trade Lombardi, sign Parise
Trade Connolly, promote Kadri
Trade Komisarek, sign Suter
Trade Armstrong, sign Tootoo

Losing those 5 players would free up $17.1M, if my mental math is correct. It would take $7.5M (Parise), $7M (Suter), $1.5M (Tootoo) and $1M-$2M (Vokoun/Harding) to sign the replacements, at a cost of approximately $17-$17.5M.

I realize how difficult it will be to rid us of those latter 4 contracts. So bury a few.

Also: sign UFA Justin Schultz

Lupul - Parise - Kessel
Kulemin - Grabo - MacA
Frattin - Bozak - Kadri
Brown - Steckel - Tootoo

Phaneuf - Suter
Gardiner - Schultz
Schenn - Liles
Franson

Reimer
Vokoun/Harding

1) Tomas Vokoun
2) Zach Parise
3) Ryan Suter
4) David Clarkson
5) Nazem Kadri

1) As was said above, a veteran goalie (heck, a veteran, period) would greatly help this team. Vokoun has shown flashes of his regular self in Washington, but I think he would thrive on this team, with the defense-first system Carlyle is implementing.

2) Any explanation required? It's Zach Parise. He would take an enormous amount of pressure off of Phil Kessel, allowing both of them to do what they do best: burn the opposing team.

3) Ryan Suter is tailor made for Randy Carlyle's defensive system. He instantly becomes the #1 defenseman on the team, taking a lot of pressure off Phaneuf. He also allows Phaneuf to play in a 3-4 role, which I think is what Phaneuf is best suited for.

4) I have wanted David Clarkson on this team for years. He'd be a solid 3rd line contributor who can chip in offensively. Instantly makes Toronto's checking line one of the best.

5) I think this is the year where Nazem Kadri breaks into the lineup full time. His promotion might end up being the best thing to happen to Toronto this summer, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Trade or bury Lombardi, Armstrong, Connolly and Komisarek.

Lupul-Parise-Kessel
MacA-Grabo-Kadri
Clarkson-Bozak-Kulemin
Brown-Steckel-Frattin

Suter-Schenn
Phaneuf-Gunnarsson
Liles-Gardiner
Franson

Vokoun
Reimer

Can I do it a bit different...

We need to Sign PArise...

Then we trade Kessel for MAtt Duchene or a different young talented Center

Then we sign Justin Schultz

Then we trade Luke Schenn our 1st and Colborne for Rick Nash

Sign Paul Gaustad

Trade Cmac Connolly Bozak for picks
Demote - Lombardi

Nash - Duchene - Parise
Lupul - Grabbo - KAdri
Frattin - Gaustad - Kulemin
Brown - Steckel - Army

Phaneuf - Gunnar
Gardiner - Liles
Franson - Komi
Schultz if he impresses at camp.

Then I honestly have no idea what to do about a goalie..lol

I always knew Parise to be a winger.

Why are ppl putting him as a center in their future line ups?

Realistically... Here's a few free agents I was thinking Burke shoudl go after.

Suter
Barrett Jackman/Brad Stuart/Matt Carle
PA Parenteau
Paul Gaustad/Travis Moen
George Parros -Only to be paired with Brown so we have the best mustache line ever
Josh Harding/Tomas Vokoun

As for a trade! I wouldn't mind a Stastny or JVR or Dustin Brown

Edit: Forgot that Burke shoudl go hard for Justin Schultz

J. Staal - apparently with his contract expiring at the same time as Crosby's next year, they are going to have a tough time signing him.
R. Getzlaf - Anaheim is going to need to shake things up.
D. Brown - apparently available
J. Bernier - picked up along with Brown
J. Shultz - great yound D as UFA

Bonus: F. Forseberg from the draft

Out:

Komisarek - moved to a team trying to hit the cap floor
Connelly - with only one year left on his deal, he's a legit top 6 option for teams once the UFA market dries up
Lombardi - if he can rebound next year, he could have decent value to a team looking for speed in their top 9
Gustavsson - walks as a UFA
MacArther - just don't see him fitting in to the team long term

We'd also have to trade a bunch of assets like Grabovski, Bozak, Phanuef, Kadri, and Colborne plus much more to acquire those guys

Then you'd have a lineup of:

Kessel Getzlaf Lupul
Frattin Staal D. Brown
Kulemin UFA Ashton
UFA/ Prospect Steckle M. Brown

Gardiner Shultz
Schenn Gunnarson
Franson Liles
Holzer

Bernier
Reimier

............... and then I woke up

Realistically though - if we could bring in one of Getzlaf / Staal, plus Brown + Shultz - I'd be though the moon!

I like where you went with that but that is an incredibly young defensive corps. I'm thinking we need a little more of a veteran presence on the back end!
