How long will Boyle play? (+future of SJ D)

Obviously he's getting older. How long will Dan Boyle play?
How long can he be the cornerstone of the Sharks' defense?
Could he stick around like Lidstrom? Or might he regress in
these last years? When his contract ends, do you think he
would take a discount?

Also, with the recent development of Justin Braun, what are
your thoughts on the teams ability to make up for Boyle once
he's gone? Braun could essentially bump Demers to 3D, and
Burns to 1D. Does Burns have the potential to fill Boyle's skates?

As for the shut down guys on our roster. Vlasic is immensely
talented, and still young. No doubt an integral part of SJ's
future defensive corps. Murray is a very solid veteran, though
some feel he would be expendable if the Brad Stuart rumors
come true. But what about our 3rd pairing? Vandermeer, and
white were brought in to anchor that down, but both have been
disappointing. Could the answer be in house? How close are guys
like Petrecki, or Doherty to making the big club?

Sorry, that's a lot I just threw out. Just some things I was thinking
about, and I know people here know a lot more about the game than I do.

Boyle is still a force but at his age you can expect a decline soon. His status will depend on the teams playoff performance. if we chunk it, again, I could see them moving him to free up cap space to make more changes.

Brad Stuart would not replace boyle. If anything he would replace Murray or push murray to 3rd pair.
Then we'd be looking at our options of
Vlasic-Boyle/burns
Murray/Stuart-burns/demers
Murray/ufa-demers/Braun

Boyle is still beasting it up out there and it amazes me. I thought like a lot of people at the beginning of the season that his struggle were signs of the end. But ever since his foot healed, he's back to doing his thing. I can see him playing as long as Lidstrom, his skills just haven't seemed to age much at all.

If we want to keep our pairs as one offensive defenseman paired with one defensive defenseman on each pair I think we'll be fine.

Boyle, Burns, Braun all add offense ( I think Braun has serious offensive upside in there)
Vlasic, Murray (Stuart?), Demers (or another Veteran addition)

Not to mention we have several defensive prospects that could come in and challenge for a spot.

We seem to be good on defense surprisingly...

As long as Boyle's skating holds up, he will be dangerous. He is having a down season and is still looking at 50 points and top minutes on the team. I think he stays around and Burns takes over top minutes, but he will continue to be deadly for us for a while. I would not like to see him go, he is a guy you can count on to bring it every night.

I hope Boyle continues to stay with the Sharks after his current contract is up. He's still an upper-tier offensive defenseman in the league, and I don't think he's going to fall off a cliff production-wise. Besides, he's my favorite current Shark.

I would not be surprised to see him traded in July though. His full NTC expires on June 30th, so there's a window to trade him while he still has a lot of value. I don't think it will happen though.

i think we have around an 8% chance at ryan suter (pavelski and gary suter connections) if that happens, bye bye boyle. suters an essential guy aa we need to be able to puck move on the left side. my ideal pairins for next year would be:

vlasic-burns
suter-demers
stuart-braun
petrecki/vandy/irwin

this works but switch Braun and Demers. I really think Braun is going to be a lot better than Demers on both sides of the puck.

If DW can't get some awesome crazy return for Boyle (young top-6 winger, potential top-3, high 1st/good forward prospect), I'd rather he stay. Even when his contract is up, I'd love him to re-sign on the cheap as a #4/5 PPQB.

Future of the Sharks D looks very good (can't say the same for the forward corps...). We have Burns, Vlasic, Braun, and Demers already on the roster and 27 or younger. If Demers and Braun hit their potential, they could definitely fill out our top-4 for a while. And then we have tons of prospects on D like Doherty, Petrecki, Abeltshauser, Wrenn, etc. I'm fairly confident that two of those guys could become bottom-6ers, and I'd feel comfortable saying that there's a good chance one of them becomes top-4.

Basically, I'm not remotely worried about the future of our defense. But we need young top-6 wingers bad.
