Ya it's exciting times with so many quality arms coming thru the system and you didnt even mention either Justin Nicolino or Aaron Sanchez who both have crazy high ceilings. I was watching the Rays game today and Hellickson is a pitcher who I think Hutchison could be similar too. They are about the same size and have somewhat similar stats in the minors. If Drabek can figure his ***** out this rotation going forward will be very very good.
Just limited eyeballing I dont understand the hype. Pinpoint command but that's about it.
It was low A-ball but still.... seen much stronger arms roll through Vancouver.
I was going to, and then I applied for a passport renewal (since I want to go to London for the Olympics) and I am now unable to leave the country until April 16th. Ah well.
I accidently washed my passport so now its invalid. brutal.
He threw as hard as Brandon Morrow and regularly hit 94-96. Highest I saw him hit was 97 last year.
Really, hmm most games I saw him he was throwing an easy 91-92 with some good movement, if he can consistently throw around 95 with his movement on his fastball thats almost unfair for hitters
He was cut. Stole home on a throwback to the pitcher. Bold move. ??
No I'm talking about the part where it makes Lawrie look like a *****. Not sure where your going with that. They don't even play in same part of the field let alone the right position.

Easily sits above that with similar K rates but obviously against lesser competition.

Weird because every game, it seemed like he was sitting 93-94 and consistently hitting 95-96. It's why I am so high on him despite the lack of strikeouts. A 2-seamer/sinking hard fastball with tons of fastball is going to be great for him if he can maintain his velocity. If his slider improves, he could take it up a notch.

They need to let him off the leash a bit this year.... his k-rate & oOPS took a decent hit once he hit the majors so not much to lose IMHO.

K rate and oOPS are expected to take a hit once you get to the big leagues and I don't think he was on any sort of leash. Maybe they watched his pitch counts and innings a little bit but that's expected for a really young starter.

Not usual to lose 5-7mph on your fastball unless its as per the coach's instruction.

How did he lose 5-7 mph on his fasbtall? He threw in the mid 90's and threw that in the big leagues. He might have touched 101 once but nobody is sure that radar gun was 100% right.
Highest I saw him throw was 98/99 in that future's game as a reliever.

He threw 3 pitches at 101 over 2 separate outings and probably loads more at 100mph even.
He threw 93 last year with the Jays, he sat at 97-98 in the same season in New Hampshire.
anyone from Toronto making the trip to Cleveland over Easter? me and some friends got seats like 20 rows behind the Jays dugout for $35. i'm dying waiting for this.
I'm thinking about it - Will be a last minute thing. It's only 4 hours away, but I'm heading to Quebec for the leafs game thursday night so it would mean going straight from cleveland all the way there...
Also, not sure why it hasn't been mentioned by Alvarez pitched in a minor league game against Yankees high A team.
Mike Wilner @Wilnerness590
Alvarez is done after 7 innings, allowed 2 hits, no runs, no walks, 4 Ks. 72p/57 strikes, topped out at 95. Saw 1 over min. #bluejays #jays
I saw that he was pitching an odd one today. Great numbers for him although it was against a pretty weak opponent compared to what he's use to now.
So on that espn ranking of the top 500 players they have Ricky Romero at 77. Behind pitchers like Mat Latos, Yu Darvish and Michael Pineda. What a joke
And Lawrie at 83. I know he's not proven yet, but I wouldn't trade him for a single bat I saw listed 50-82.

That's not a mandate from the coaching staff?
I seriously doubt it. Radar guns in minor league games are always a little bit juiced and I don't think I've seen guys like Keith Law, Goldstein, Callis, Sickels say he can occasionally hit 100+ or even touched 100+. He might have but it was probably just once.
And he never sat 97-98 in NH. That's like Strasburg level and everybody would be going bonkers over him if this was true. He averaged 93.3 on his fastball which is exactly as hard as Felix Hernandez and just below guys like Kershaw, Morrow, CC, Garza etc... With the exception of Strasburg who averaged 95.8, Verlander and Ogando were the hardest throwers at exactly 95.0.
He was never a guy that could sit in high 90's and I think I remember Law or Goldstein saying specifically he doesn't sit in high 90's but he does sit in mid 90's and can touch upper 90's occasionally.
Also, there would be no point in holding him back if he could throw as hard as you say.

LOL. So did he hit 101 3 times or are the radar guns 'juiced'? Can't have it both ways

Fisher Cats pitching coach Pete Walker said Alvarez has touched 101 mph this year and sits at 96-100, a significant improvement from the 92-94 he was throwing in high Class A Dunedin last season.
"He has a 98 mph fastball with depth," Walker said. "It's pretty fun to watch. Standing behind him in the bullpen watching his stuff, you know it's special.

Verlander and Ogando arent even close to the hardest throwers in MLB.

Sitting that high is like Strasburg and I just don't think he throws that hard. He could do it as a reliever though which he showed in future's game as he was routinely throwing 96-99. He's not going to sit in the high 90's as a starter.
And there is just no reason why mlb coaches would tell him to take off 5 miles on his fastball.

Aroldis Chapman alone throws 99+ on average.
I was talking among starters. Chapman could still be the hardest thrower as a starter though.
