The Donbass hockey club has announced it will build a modern multipurpose sports arena, the Kalmius Arena, in Donetsk ahead of the EuroBasket 2015 European Basketball Championship in Ukraine.

"The main play area will be capable of hosting basketball and hockey games. It will also be possible to hold boxing fights, athletics events and concerts on it," the club's press service reported on Saturday.

The arena will seat 13,145 spectators during basketball games, 12,800 people during hockey games and 14,305 spectators during boxing matches.

As reported, Donbass Hockey Club Ltd. (Donetsk), Donetsk-Basket Ltd. (Donetsk) and United Basketball Investments Ltd. (Kyiv) were declared the winners of a tender for the construction of basketball facilities in cities that can host the European basketball championship in 2015.

Donbass Hockey Club won the right to build a multipurpose arena for at least 15,000 seats in Donetsk.

Donetsk-Basket will build a multipurpose sports arena in Donetsk for at least 6,000 seats.

United Basketball Investments got the right to build multipurpose sports arenas in Kyiv for at least 15,000 spectators, in Odesa for at least 10,000 spectators, in Dnipropetrovsk for at least 10,000 spectators, in Lviv for at least 10,000 spectators and in Ivano-Frankivsk for at least 6,000 seats. President of the Basketball Federation of Ukraine Oleksandr Volkov said that the owners of United Basketball Investments are companies owned by entrepreneurs Ihor Kolomoisky and Dmytro Buriak.

Ukraine won the right to host the first European Championships Men's Basketball teams in 2015, in December 2011. Bid to host the matches of the tournament served Kyiv, Odessa, Dnepropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk.

On December 18, 2011 Ukraine received the right to host the European Basketball Championship in 2015. Ukraine proposed hosting the championship in its largest cities, including Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Lviv, Kharkiv and Ivano-Frankivsk.
Good for Donetsk but mostly good for the rest of the country. Setting up big arenas for the basketball tournament will mean legit arenas for Berkut in Kiev for their KHL push, and setting up PHL teams in Lviv, Odessa, Dnipropetrovsk, and Ivano

Well that KHL push sentence looks dodgy on a day when rumours are spreading about unpaid salary at Berkut and possible cancellation of PHL playoffs.

Yeah, a league that shut down around Christmas because 7/8 clubs owed league fees and backed player wages. Now we have forfeits, Kharkiv players refuse to play until being paid, Berkut owes around 3 months of wages, Sokil has been rumoured to die soon and the only club who hasnt been in trouble this year has been eliminated from the second phase for awhile now.

Good for Donbass however Ukraine is a mess, attempting to run before you can even walk. Terrible because the PHL should be doing wonders for the country, unfortunately, too many near sighted people in charge.

Donbass will build Donbass Forum for cca 20 000 after 2015 as I know. So two modern arenas in the city.

i dont think they've been too ambitious. all the teams are very low level and full of locals. berkut was the only one that tried running....but seriously, at that low level, get your finances in check first
