What about Gainey ? He is the perfect man for the job... He can redeem himself and fix the team he destroyed.

Same reactions when JM got fired and we bottomed out to a lottery pick.

Hard to make an opinion without knowing the replacement.

Too bad they fired him now. I would had like to see him in the post season (post-mortem) press conference trying to explain us his decisions and the awful results this year. The guy will just drive down to Vermont and hide in the woods with his family.

Imagine if Molson comes up and announces himself as the new GM

Well, Gainey's position is special adviser for the GM... I doubt any new GM would want him at that position (except maybe Brisebois, which is why I don't want him).

I'm rooting for it to be Julien Brisebois. Analytical, math-minded non-ex player with an understanding of concepts like transience and risk-reward is exactly what the club needs, not a bombastic insider who manages by cliche.

If it's true that Julien Brisebois is gonna be GM, I really dislike that. He doesn't have any experience building a NHL hockey team. It's suspicious of him being setup as a "yes man" for Molson. Hopefully it will be Gainey behind him calling the shots (unlike the herd here, I don't have a problem with Gainey, he knows hockey), not rich-kid Molson.

In all fairness, Gauthier was the guy who made that happen. At least as far as we know.

This. The next guy could very easily be much worse.

You do realize we are talking about the sport of hockey, not baseball?

Yep, we saw that with the Gomez trade and the 2009 summer mess...

Francois Gagnon ‏ @GagnonFrancois

Pour le noveau DG du Canadien, je garde ma projection initiale de Vincent Damphousse conseillé par Serge Savard...

Basically Gagnon is saying it'll be Damphousse with Serge Savard as his tutor.

That would be...horrible.

Had to be done, assuming they don't replace him with a sideshow.

Based on the timing I'd imagine Julien Brisebois is likely, considering it's been the most common name thrown around this week. Which I'd be happy about.

Most new GM's come in an clean house from top to bottom. PG sort of inherited the team (with Gainey's abrupt departure) and never really got to pick a head coach (Cunneyworth's appointment not withstanding - that was more of a urgent, need a coach now, kind of move) nor did he get to shape the administration (other than a shakeup of the scouting department, which we really can't evaluate at this time). At the same time another part of me wonders if he deserves such a chance - while there have been personal coups that have made an impact (Cole and Emelin) there are also a handful of experiences which I'm not sure should be made by anyone claiming to be an NHL GM. Pearn's firing hours before a game. Martin's firing without a replacement. PG's failure to prepare for the possibility of a season without Markov and the last minute desperation moves made to hide that, the Squid's mid-game trade to Calgary - they all smack of someone who is not quite comfortable in such an important role. His time as a pro-scout also does him no favours - Samsonov, Niinimaa and Pouliot (although the latter might also reflect poorly on Timmins) as well as Latendresse, Ribeiro and Kostitsyn the Younger all suggest that PG wasn't that great a pro-scout either.

Right now I hope whoever the new guy is he cleans up the house. From hockey operations the only guys I think are worth keeping around are Timmins (and I think I'd let Timmins identify the guys from his team who are worth keeping on - they've earned some protection) and Rynbend (and I only say this because I am woefully unqualified to say anything about a sports therapist). Everyone else - you might not have strictly earned dismissal, but this team needs a new direction and a GM who is providing that needs to make sure everyone buys in to the new plan.
Gauthier's situation wasn't like most new GMs. He was hired and held key managerial roles (Assistant GM and Director of Pro Scouting) under Gainey's 7 year tenure. He then moved in as GM when Bob stepped aside voluntarily and gave him his blessings. To make it even weirder, Bob stayed on as adviser and was even with Gauthier during the trade deadline.

Hopefully the new GM is actually someone new.
