If we do suck the whole year, I do think he'll be gone by the draft worst case scenario. I'm not even sure he'd mind at that point, though he obviously won't agree to be traded just anywhere. I would hate it, he's been my favorite player. But if you can get some really good assets and a ton of cap space, it might be the best thing long term even if it hurts short term.
I agree rocky. That's why I said if they continue to suck. I'm still delusional enough to hope everyone but Jordan is close to coming back, we can make some progress while Jordan's still gone, and kill it when he gets back, until it doesn't happen. Being a fan wouldn't be much fun otherwise. But if they do suck much much later in the year, it needs to be considered at this point.
Eric Staal has the final say. Curious to how this situation will play out. We he waive without Jordan? Does he want to give this season a shot?
Like Mckenzie said, Eric is happy here. He just wants to win, and he probably holds himself most accountable for the team not winning. A few years ago it seemed pretty clear that Eric wasn't happy and didn't feel he had support. That is why JR went out and got him Jordan and Semin. Things haven't gone as expected for the fans or Eric since that happened. So maybe he is ready to move on?
I wonder if he would be willing to go home and play for Toronto. They really aren't in a much better situation than us as far as winning. I would be happy with a package of Kadri, Gardiner and a 1st though.
I wouldn't be surprised if Eric wants to move on, but I'm willing to be that Ron Francis would have to grovel at Eric's feet to get him to waive his NTC to go to Toronto. They're not much better than the 'Canes, and it's a high-intensity market. Eric would get ripped to shreds.
The worst he has had to endure here is John Forslund calling him out indirectly ("The leaders have to lead", said before the home opener). You think with his uninspired defensive play and cold streaks that he would fly under the radar in Toronto?
Plus, the 'Canes are probably going to suck enough to get a high draft pick anyway with him. If McDavid/Eichel is truly what the 'Canes are aiming for, they need to trade Eric now. By the time the deadline rolls around it will be too late.
I don't think we'd get Reilly, but Percy I think would be doable. Honestly think most Leafs fans would rather do him then Gardiner from what I can tell as well, though that might just have to do with not breaking up their current defense.
