He's a FA, and last I heard they are going to let him walk.

Here is the most recent update. It seems he is waiting on ownership to resolve itself.

Didn't realize. He could wind up in any of those places you mentioned.

He and Backstrom are the big fishes in a very weak UFA goalie market this summer.

Other free agent goalies:
Thomas
Nabokov
Khabibulin
Mason
Theodore
Emery
A lot of backup garbage that nobody really wants

Smith and Backstrom will each go to one of the teams mentioned, or with their current teams. Pittsburgh will gut it out with Fleury. I suspect Edmonton will stick with Dubnyk considering the year he just had. I doubt Tampa makes a big goalie move after dealing Conacher to get the one they wanted.

That leaves 3 teams. Luongo will certainly go to one of those. It would not be a shock if Pittsburgh deals Vokoun to another. And St. Louis still has an extra goalie.

Basically the market for goalies consists of one or two rebuilding teams. It's probably the worst year in recent memory to attempt a goalie trade.

I want him to stay in Phoenix. He's an uber talented goaltender who is up and down. Playing in a defensive system like Phoenix brings out the best in him.

Tarheel, what's the latest on the Phoenix situation?

Imagine it was 2011 and you were asking that same question.

Looking at that list it makes me wonder if Ellis would be the right move for us at this stage. With all those capable hands seeking jobs, in a buyer's market no less, it seems like it might be more prudent to give it a whirl in free agency. Who knows though.

All it does is give JR a chance to use his pimp hand to save 50-100k of what Ellis is asking.

Collin Olson among the 4 goalies invited to the US WJC camp

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=673975

There's really no clear cut #1 for this year among this group, unlike prior years where we've had Gibson and Campbell in the mix. Gillies is the likely #1, but I wouldn't be shocked to see Stolarz or Olson beat him out.

Gillies is a world beater, man. I feel like Olson has an uphill climb ahead of him. I would love for him to make the squad and potentially get some starts against weaker countries, but I feel like Gillies is the man here.

I was sky high Gillies heading into the draft last year (thought it was an exceptional US class for goalies) so I know what you mean in terms of his ability. It's just an interesting situation where you have a non-NTDP guy as the favorite. If there's one thing the US teams have shown over the years it's that their guys tend to get the best looks. Might be over-estimating that tendency and it could really be a battle for the backup between Olson and Stolarz at this point with Olson having that NTDP edge.

I really like Gibson, I wouldn't mind trying to get him from Ana, they have a back up of Goalies it seems.

Ain't gonna come cheap. He's their goalie of the future.

Hiller, Fasth, Andersen, Gibson and a couple others.

Maybe we can get Andersen.

Hiller will likely be traded, Fasth is already getting up there in age, Andersen has looked good no doubt, who knows what will happen with Bobkov. Gibson is their goalie of the future for sure. He'll take over in a few years if all goes as planned. I think any ducks fan would probably say the same.

I don't know if I would agree with saying Fasth is "getting up there in age". He's going to turn 31 in August. That's only about a year or more older than Cam Ward. Goaltenders can play at a high level for a long time and Fasth doesn't have a lot of miles on him. It reminds me of Tim Thomas in a way. He's roughly the same age as Hiller and the only reason they're probably moving away from Hiller is salary demands. I could see Fasth starting in Anaheim for the next three or four years if he can maintain the level of play he exhibited this season.

Gibson is going to need some time. 3 or 4 seasons more than likely. If you're bringing in a goaltender before 20, you're either a terrible rebuilding team or you don't care much for the confidence of the player. In almost every scenario it's a terrible idea. Dan Blackburn, Rick DiPietro, Marc-Andre Fleury.... quite a few others. You just never can go wrong with waiting until a player is ripe at that position.

I wouldn't say "let him walk", but would say the ownership saga which directly effects Coach Tippet re-signing and Smith re-signing.

I can see the Coyotes being interested in Peters as a replacement for LaBarbera.

You can find the archive of that hour HERE. It's free and won't download anything, just click the link on that page and it will open in your media player or you can find it at iTunes.

Carolina has invited some HIGHLY interesting names to their prospect camp this year:

Sergei Tolchinsky - http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=108653

http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/sh....php?t=1092531

The most notable in my estimation being this player. He was expected to go anywhere between the 3rd and 4th round but went undrafted likely due to the "Russian factor", we have come to know and love. Pure. Skill.

Brandon Shea

http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=114802

Don't know a lot about him other than he was once a high draft pick in the Q. Seems like injuries derailed him a bit for this draft year?

Mike Chiasson

http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=37884

Son of Steve, will wear 33 in development camp. Nice story for the Michigan defender. Likely noticed while scouting DiGu......vowels.

Hopefully something can come of one of these guys and we can gain another good prospect. Kinda sucked to see Torey Krug on our radar only for him to go to Boston and look good in his time there so far.

Could the Canes sign either of the 18 year olds, or do they have to go back into the draft?

There is a window to sign them.
