The Business of HockeyDiscuss the financial and business aspects of the NHL. Franchise sales, valuations, TV contracts, ratings, expansion, relocation, the CBA and work stoppage discussion goes here.
I think a bunch of posters should create Biz Nes Ovocky Board LLC and reach out to CoG with our offer to manage the arena and book additional dates (bead selling at Westgate) just to get into the minutes of a public reading. Who's in?
Without going into details, I can say with a fair degree of confidence that this wouldn't be hard to accomplish.
What does it cost to create a Nevada LLC these days - like, twenty bucks? Sure, I'll chip in.
I know they were talking about Cactus Joe and his comments about Mayor Scruggs not running again. I thought this snippet by Concilwomen Alvarez was pretty scathing as well. Shows the deep divide that has been settled over the CoG.
Glendale City Councilwoman Norma Alvarez: "I'm very happy (that) the mayor is not running. I was not surprised by her announcement. She is too arrogant to take any more beatings. She has not been well-respected for her decisions. I am very happy that she will be gone. I don't see a legacy when we are $1.8 billion in the hole, when we have services cut. If I was her I would resign sooner."
On Mar. 1, LeBlanc sent an e-mail message to Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs, city attorney Craig Tindall and each member of city council. LeBlanc said his company, is willing to sign a long-term contract to manage the arena, try to find a minor-league team as a tenant and work to increase the events at the arena if the NHL decides to move the Coyotes. LeBlanc also wrote in the e-mail offer that he received approval from the NHL to “pursue these discussions in more detail.”
A source said the matter was discussed Mar. 6 at an executive session of council, which is not open to the public, and set aside because the Coyotes situation is not resolved.
LeBlanc said there was a partial misunderstanding with Daly about approval from the NHL. He said Daly did not tell him to proceed with attempts to get an American Hockey League or ECHL franchise or negotiate a management contract with Glendale, only that the NHL would not object if he researched the matter.
Hey, I don't blame LeBlanc at all. He most likely figures that if the CoG is willing to give the NHL $25M per year to "manage" the arena, why not try to get that cash yourself.

Yikes-sounds the sharks are coming out now-and maybe it's a bit of insight into how certain people were seen in the council chambers. Also find myself rethinking the Scruggs Beasley "Retirements"-perhaps the council members who ARE planning for re-election, or have to manage in this poisonous atmosphere, maybe jump on the "vote no" bandwagon so as to gain some favor-Beasley and Scruggs-IF they vote yes-might be the only ones who do it.
also sounds like, reading the article, the people running for the positions are of the fiscal restraint variety-to me sounding more like anyone who would vote for the 25 million, and isn't retiring, will be in some uncomfortable awkward positions come the fall...

Someone mention "sharks"?...
"Jesus!. How much more of this cheap-jack Bull$#*% can we be expected to take from that stupid Gunsel?. If there were any justice in this world at all, his rancid carcass would be somewhere down around Easter Island right now, in the belly of a Hammerhead Shark" Hunter S. Thompson on Richard Nixon
Alvarez is going to have to do a lot better than even Thompson if she expects to get re-elected.
Followed by the Interregnum between Kings Phoenix the XXXVII-th and Phoenix the XXXVIII-th:
[PYTHON]
The most interesting thing about King Charles, the first
Is that he was 5 foot 6 inches tall at the start of his reign
But only 4 foot 8 inches tall at the end of it because of
Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of England Puritan
Born in 1599 and died in 1658 September
[/PYTHON]
And now is the end near?
And do we face the final curtain
My friend I'll say it clear
I'll state my case of which I'm certain
"For what is a prat, what has he got
When he wears hats and he cannot
Say the things he truly feels
But only the words, of one who kneels
The record shows, I ****ed a bloke
And did it my way..."

Do you think Ice Edge's minor league target is really Phoenix? You would have to think they are smart enough to realize that minor league hockey has repeatedly failed in Phoenix and would end up a financial disaster in Glendale for all of the same reasons the Coyotes failed. I suspect that Ice Edge's current true target remains a Thunder Bay minor team. They want the city of Thunder Bay to build them a new arena. This might just be a ploy to put pressure on the local Thunder Bay council to get things going with the threat of moving on to Phoenix if Thunder Bay doesn't pay out. Games...Games...Games.

Alvarez ran in November 2010, she won't need to be re-elected for over 2 years. the terms in Glendale run every 4 years but tiered. 3 of the 6 councillors are up for election this year then the other 3 in 2 years time.

Huh? How does an NHL team's success relate at all to the AHL. They are completely different economically. If an AHL team in Glendale drew half as much fans as the NHL draws it would be successful.
I'm surprised that Shoaltzie approached LeBlanc got a quote from him after previously getting punkd by them with Manchester United. LeBlanc must have been chuckling and I'm sure Shoaltzie had his "early April Fools radar" up on this one for sure. Shoalts seems to have gotten confirmation from a "source" that the Ice Edge offer was discussed at the Mar 6 executive session. There are only a handful of people that know what is discussed in the executive session... They are private for a reason. So was it Lieberman or Alvarez that was the source? I'd give 50/50 odds on it being either of them based on their recent farewell wishes to Scruggs.

AHL... way less revenue than an NHL team but the same travel costs as an NHL team. If the arena is in the wrong place for hockey fans to get to for NHL hockey, it is in the wrong place for the same hockey fans to get to for AHL fans. How many times has minor league hockey failed in Phoenix? Playing in Glendale isn't going to help this time around.
Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Travel costs?? How about salary costs? Which are virtually nil compared to the NHL. They get 12,000 people out there on average. If they got that to an AHL team they'd be top of hte league in attendance. If you don't understand how vastly different the economics are between the AHL and NHL I can't help you.
The IHL's Roadrunners were successful for over a decade and folded cause the NHL came to town.

Due to the location, the best a team in Glendale could hope for is a 4,000 average; even that is a dream since that figure is from the ECHL at US Airways Center. No way a minor league team works in Glendale. Not when they mostly play on the weekends and a concert could draw three times that on a Saturday.
During the week though, I would guess most businesses close shop. Having to rely on a minor league team/1 concert on Saturdays/Fridays and the 10 Sunday Cardinals games (and 1 Fiesta Bowl) would not be enough to keep businesses afloat. Assuming Glendale could even lure a team or regular concerts to the West Side.
Nope, sadly if the Coyotes leave I could see the whole Westgate Center turning into a place like Fiesta Mall; which I am sure the Super Bowl Committee would not like.

This is the same Norma Alvarez who soon after she was sworn into office had Glendale spend some considerable dough wiring her home to the council chambers just so she could attend meetings remotely due to health issues.
