The groups in WC D1 - what went wrong with the seeding?
The groups for the World Championship Division I have been shown on the IIHF website for some months. The problem with them is that they're totally insane. The groups is seperated into one containing the six highest teams and the other with the six lowest.
This was the case for a while, but as we came closer to the tournaments, the original groups were changed into two others using a classic seeding system based on the world ranking.
With just two weeks left until the first faceoff, nothing has happened, and the ticket sale confirms that these are the groups for Division 1 this year:
Group A (the numbers are the nations' current world ranking)
21. Great Britain
31. South Korea
How is this possible? Will the group winner in group B no longer be promoted to top division? The IIHF must have changed something, but I can't find any information about it.
