As for today, Toronto's 5th team in Draft Lottery standings.
I know they've got 5 games left, but let's say they will be where they are today.
My question is : If Toronto won the draft lottery and got 1st overall, would they pick Grigorenko with that pick, because of need for center, even though Yakupov is BPA ???
The question is not about the certain team, it's about the fact where the need is more (probably) then BPA.
As a Pens fan I know how important is to have great centers.
I'll appreciate your meaningful opinions.
If they really wanted to do this, it'd make more sense for them to trade down 1 spot. Pick up another asset and still get their man.
Hypothetical fan reaction here if the Leafs draft 1st overall:
1.Did Bettman rig the lottery? (1 2 3 4 5 ... last page)
2.Were all the balls weighted to Toronto? (1 2 3 4 5 ... last page)
3.Bettman admits to draft weighting for Leafs (thread locked)
4.Confirmed with link: Internet sports forums melt down after Leafs draft #1.
They will draft Grigorenko or Yakupov if they get that low. They will (may?) try to trade the 5 pick, w/Schenn/Kadri/etc for Nash though..
Burke is in a position right now where it's pretty much do or die from here on out. If he was smart he would trade Kessel and ensure that the Leafs are in the running for MacKinnon next year and possibly McDavid the year after. He has a few attractive trade pieces (more than what he started with) like Kessel, Gardener but I would keep the D man. Kessel for a top 10 could be a good basis to work around. If the Leafs won the lottery this year its definitely Yaks. I would hope they would try for Galchenyuk as well if they were to acquire another pic.
If Burke does that, he almost guarantee himself getting fired and never seeing the fruits of his work.
The time for the Leafs to use that strategy was 3 years ago, not now.

This is one of the most moronic ideas that has somehow propagated itself on these boards.
Trading a 24 year old with four straight 30 goal seasons under his belt, and who will finish top 10 in goals and scoring just to get a top 10 pick?
Yeah that's a great way to start a rebuild. No rebuilds trade the old pieces that won't fit in a couple years, not the young attractive pieces.
I wouldn't trade Kessel for Yakupov straight up and anyone that would is a moron. Kessel will and should be a part of any rebuild on any team in the league because he's a piece you can build around (yes I said build around).
If this happened and I was in Burkes shoes, I would try to trade down and grab both Gally and Grigo. I think it would be a decent idea and maybe trade first overall+lupul/kadri/kulemin to a team like the blue jackets for their 1st overall and maybe try to get a 3-way deal going. Just my random input.

For one thing I can almost guarantee that no matter where the Leafs finish this season a team behind them will win the lottery and push them back a spot.
That said, if the hypothetical in the OP did occur, I think that the Leafs would take Yakupov at #1 overall.
