His contract is only really 6 more seasons after the current one and then you feel comfortable burying him in the AHL if he falls off a cliff. (3.4M, 1.6M, then 2 seasons at $1M each)
Wow, so how much in actual dollars is he getting? I know the cap hit is 5.3 but he must be getting close to 9 a year in actual cash for the next 6
I agree completely, which is exactly why Burke should offer sheet him. But will he? Oh no, of coure not. That would be *sniffle* underhanded and immoral.
We'd have to give up a first, could be another top 5 pick next year. No thanks.
I live in Vancouver so there are two things I'd like to address here:
1. Luongo - sucks guys. I've seen him get pulled 7 times this year already. He's not the second coming of Eddie Belfour. He'd be more like a bit of an upgrade on Giguere.
2. Nonis - what's with people loving Nonis on here? He absolutely sucked in Vancouver and missed the playoffs with Luongo/Sedins/Kesler/Burrows and co. He brought in the likes of Ritchie, Isbister, and a few other fails. Traded Mat Cooke away for Pettinger (a life long AHLer).... He's brutal. He's a bit of an upgrade on JFJ.
So when it comes to Vancouver - Canuck fans must be stoked when they read our board because we are willing to take on all of their garbage and suggest trading the likes of kadri..or even firing burke for nonis. ALL DOWNGRADES
How did Sean Burke turn Mike Smith into one of the best goalies in the league?
Maybe Leafs need to find a goalie coach?

using his big frame to create space and his skating ability to find open lanes to drive the net. He stands 6-3 and is a natural goal scorer with plenty of confidence.
He's a scout's dream in the way he prepares himself and plays an unselfish game, making smart decisions with the puck. With his bloodlines, he certainly understands what it will take to make it at the next level.
A better question is, if there is an 'amnesty' clause in the new CBA, would Vancouver use it to free themselves of Luongo's contract if Schneider continues to impress? 10 years seems like a long time with Cory in the wings.
That would be the most insane buyout ever! They still owe Luongo $60+ mil in salary and that $ amount would be INSANE!
Better to just trade him for picks and keep your money?
Not a chance Luongo is bought out.....so one of the two are traded likely around draft or July 1. If Vancouver only makes it a few rounds in the playoffs that will expedite matters
It's worth repeating guys, slow and steady build from within. Quick fixes are long shots at best. We've been about quick fixes for decades. I may have to bring out the old definition of insanity sig.
they can keep him. there's no need for the Leafs to chain themselves to a contract like that, even if Burke were willing to have them on his team which he isn't.
besides, why would Luongo want to come to a losing franchise?

Mike Smith was already a solid goalie. i watch 50+ Yotes games a season. they're my favourite team other than the Leafs and i can confidently say that the team system and head coach are the biggest reason for goaltending success in Phoenix.
the Flyers are clearly a WAY better team than the Coyotes...yet Bryz consistently had a better SV% in Phoenix than he does so far in Philly. the system the team plays is really impressive...and while the goalie still has to make the saves, the system they play makes it much easier for the goalies.
i'm not taking credit away from Smith or Bryzgalov...but the players in Phoenix have completely bought into what the coach is teaching, and they do it as well as any.

But who wants a 32 year old goalie for 10 more years on their payroll.

LOL. Not in a derogatory manner ...
Coaching making a difference? Not around here, it is only about the players.
Hitchcock in St. Louis didn't make any difference.
