We haven't even seen his best yet, he usually cranks it up a notch in the playoffs. Give him an opposing top line center to check and he will shadow that player and make his life miserable.
At 34, past his peak, but still good enough to show us what a very good checking center looks like.
The second I heard we got him, I was extremely excited. Finally. Chicago gave up a top 4 dman in Wiz to get him in 2009. 4th rounders is a pretty cheap price for a top 9 forward with cup experience.
4th rounders are cheap, how many of them do reach NHL/draft as a regular player? One, or even less?
Yeah and he should probably have had some more. Varlamov made a pretty wicked save on him last game plus he hit the empty net but O'Reilly got in front of it in time.
I wasn't a huge fan of the Pahlsson deal when it was first made, as by most accounts he was fairly unimpressive often in Columbus.
However the point was raised that his job is as a shutdown guy when your team is up by a goal going into the 3rd period or last 10 minutes. On a team like Columbus, they were rarely winning so his role was fairly irrelevant.
He's been great here. On top of that, he's been more physical than I expected. Wish he was signed for one more season instead of Malhotra, sorry Manny.
Pahlsson was one of the 2 or 3 players I really wanted to see Gillis try to get. Glad we got him for so cheap and would love it if we resigned him for another 2 years as well.
I don't mind losing the 4th round picks, especially since one of them was basically free (from trading Ehrhoff's rights). Throw in the fact that Gillis recouped the Canucks' 3rd rounder in the Booth trade and the team is actually in a better spot than they were last year at this time (basically lost a 4th but gained back a 3rd).
It's actually pretty amazing when you consider all the assets together (ignoring minor league fodder like Oberg and Ellington):
4th round pick, 48 hours of Ehrhoff's rights, Sturm, and Samuelsson -> Higgins, Booth, Pahlsson, and Reinprecht
Very smart hockey player that seems to thrive in high-pressure games. He's going to do well for us and for Taylor Ellington (not even sure 'bust' is a strong enough word) and a couple 4th rounders (NHL's equivelent of scratch tickets) it looks like a pretty damn good move for us. Seems like he fits in well and he keeps his line working and moving their feet.
So as wc was saying AV needs him to 'shoot more' so he can start piling in the goals then correct?
A lot of the shots he takes are mostly to the chest of goaltenders if you haven't noticed.
I'm not trying to make a big deal about this, I'm just saying he doesn't have this uber amazing shot wc think he has, even with that sufficient argument of a YOUTUBE video.
I'm just saying the argument was never that he had an uber amazing shot, but rather that he didn't have a non-existent one, which the Youtube video pretty much proves.
Thanks, just for clarity: I meant how many 4th rounds/batch become regular NHL players. Your example tell that they indeed are far between.
Its very low, if you go to hockeydb.com and type NHL draft, choose a year, they've columns on the right that shows each draftee's # of NHL games, goals, assists, points and PIMs
Btw, seems like the shelf life of an NHL player is getting shorter and shorter...

i dont know that the canucks would go after him next season but if he gets them a cup playing that shutdown roll , they better
wasn't the biggest fan of this trade at the deadline as i thought pahlsson had little left in the tank, but it's been pretty obvious how he's not a black hole offensively or past his prime or any of the knocks against him that were a result of playing in columbus for a few years
higgins, lapierre, pahlsson...few gm's in the league make more savvy depth additions at the deadline than mike gillis

One think I really am surprised by when watching pahlsson is his offensive ability, people were saying he was an offensive black hole when we traded for him but he actually has some great passing ability and offensive instincts. Combine that with his obvious great defensive game and playoff & cup experience, the fact that he only took two 4th rounders to get and it was a brilliant trade me thinks.
I love how Gillis gets these players at no cost. Ehrhoff, Higgins, Lapierre, and now Pahlsson. Just admire the work Gillis and his crew does every year.

Compare his TDD depth acquisitions to those of Burke and Nonis.

Obviously everyone can shoot the puck, but just to clarify he has doesn't have a accurate shot then.

Do you always have to bring up the past? Some of us were marked for life by some of those trades. In my case, Weinrich. I still have visions of him getting beat to the outside time and time again.
his work along the boards is just great to watch. 2 dallas guy couldnt even get the puck off him. and sammy passed it to hansen for a great scoring chance in the slot.

That is not the past - that is recent history to me.
