Oiler's Current Winning Ways

So here is a question for everyone. Would you rather have the Oilers continue their current streak and move up in the standings, most likely out of the lottery. Or have them suck for the last remaining games and try to secure 2nd overall?

Ending the season on a winning note could do a lot for this teams confidence going into next year, but adding another potential elite star could benefit the team just as much.

What do you think?

P.S. Not sure how to turn this into a poll, please help.

Personally I like it when I see guys talking about how they are trying to win and want to finish strong. Sure a pick could be better, but this team needs to start showing improvements in the standings. I can't see morale being good when you lose out.

Keep winning, IMO everyone after Yakupov has minute flaws and everyone won't come to a collective decision.

CBJ locked it (1st).

The more I look at it, we're picking Ryan Murray.

I've decided I support wins, since the draftees 2-5 are such a toss up anyway. If you look at the players as opposed to the number of the draft position... There's nothing really selecting 2 gets you except extra pressure.

keep winning, if other teams around us keep winning too fine, don't care about the standings, it's just good to see the team picking up points.

Too bad that they didnt start playing better sooner, then we could have finished in 9th or 10th and got an even worse pick, and still not made the playoffs.

I want a top 5 pick, I didnt watch every meaningless game from January on just to see them win a few games and fall out of the lottery.

The love affair with draft picks needs to stop. Sure it's nice to have em but we had two first overalls in the last two years...that should at least give indication that this team needs to start making progress. I'm more worried about the progress of the team than a draft pick that may or may not pan out.

Us moving out of the lottery position and ending the season on a high note would get the team into a positive frame of mind and into next season. I would much rather see that than the team rolling on the floor and die like a wilted feather.

Hockey is a cerebral sport as much as physical sport. I hope the Oilers keep winning and finish strong and salvage pride in their season. Leave the tanking to the Toronto Maple Losers!

Poll is added, I think reflects the OP's intent well.

Frankly, if the Oilers continue to player hard and find a way to .500, that would mean more to the team then picks 3 through 6

I want wins. Always. As far as placement I'd be surprised if they finished better than 27-28th. There's not enough games left and we've got the Stars, Canucks, Kings x 2, Ducks x 2. I think we'll be lucky to go .500.

Personally I'd love to see us drafting 2nd. The problem is that you can't ask the players to tank and the only way to try to slow them down is by poor coaching decisions. Renney is a lame duck according to what has been reported lately so I don't think that he'd be down with that beyond his usual crappy coaching. I'm hoping that we just had a hot stretch and that we will crash back donw to earth a bit the rest of the way and that the guys duking it out for that spot go on big time winning streaks

I don't mind either way.. if they keep winning and end up with a 3rd or 4th pick overall.. that isn't so bad considering we can still get Dumba or Murray with that pick. Although getting Grigorenko would be nice, having a strong finish to the season and letting the players go into the offseason on a positive note could be great for the team heading into next year.

Does anybody know what the Oilers record is this season with a full to pretty much full healthy lineup?

Lose and lose often.

Winning the last five games makes absolutely no difference for next season. I don't believe in this karma crap or "good feeling" for next season. Historically there's a huge difference in the quality of player drafting #2 overall versus #6.

I think creating a winning attitude will do more for this team than the difference between the second and fifth overall picks will.

winning 5 more games at the end of a 3 year drought will do less for this team in the future than the huge difference between the #2 and #5-6 pick.

Sure, but I don't believe that creating a winning attitude is dependent on whether you win or lose the last five games of the season.

But losing the last five games won't do us any better.

Getting points in each of our last 12 games of the season would do tons towards creating a positive attitude around the team and instilling confidence in our players for next year. No one wants to end the year on a five game losing streak.

I would argue that continuing this streak might help us in the free agent market as well.

Oh but it does. Winners win and losers lose - if you think you stink, you will.

nope. I don't believe that one second.

AS IF...

Shea Weber: Oh, but the Oilers got points in their last ten games, so I should really sign there instead of Detroit.

No. I don't think so.

Right. So you're suggesting that the oilers being 26th in the league clearly means they are a "winner"? And if the oilers place 29th in the league clearly means they are a "loser"?

Um.... no. The Oilers had a "loser" season regardless of finishing in the 26th or the 29th position.

I think we both know you picked an unecessarily extreme example here.

I'm not saying finishing the season on a strong note will make one of the best players in the game pick us over a perennial contender.

I'm saying it might make a smaller free agent, like a Rozsival, Carle or a Stuart, pick us over a middle of the pack team.

2011 draft. #2 - Gabriel Landeskog. #5 - Ryan Strome.
2010 draft. #2 - Tyler Seguin. #5 - Nino Neiderreiter.
2009 draft. #2 - Victor Hedman. #5 - Brayden Schenn.
2008 draft. #2 - Drew Doughty. #5 - Luke Schenn.
2007 draft. #2 - James van Reimsdyk. #5 - Karl Alzner.
2006 draft. #2 - Jordan Staal. #5 - Phil Kessel.

In every single time, I would rather have the #2 overall player.
