What are the first FIVE things you would do as the new GM?
If you were name the new GM and were reporting to Geoff Molson and Serge Savard, what are the first FIVE things you would do as the new GM between now and training camp in September?
Example: Who would be your coach, who would you draft and who is traded etc.
I would...
1) Hire the best head coach for the job regardless of language, ethnic background or skin colour.
2) Draft Grigorenko or Galchenyuk in June and start a marketing campaign around them.
3) Buy out Gomez and Kaberle, trade Weber and Diaz for a player than can help right away and a draft pick etc.
4) Attempt to sign Semin to play on Plekanec wing, Gaustad or Prust as the 4th line centre and Suter as the 2nd/3rd defenseman with Markov, Gorges and Subban as the top 4.
5) BAN Media and fans from all practices in Montreal!
What would you do?

Honestly i like what you've said there...i wouldn't change much.
1) It would be Roy's job to lose but i'd be open to others
2) I'm leaning towards Galchenyuk but i'd be very happy with either. Not sure i'd build them up more than i had to though...they'll have enough pressure as it is.
3) I'd put Molson's commitment to winning to a test. Bury Gomez in the minors. That would allow us to sign another top 9 forward with the money saved from the buyout. I'd keep Kaberle. I wish we hadn't traded for him in the first place but i'd rather keep him than buy him out at this point. I'd keep one of Diaz/Weber and move the other for a more physical borderline NHL ready d-man (a Nick Petrecki type would be ideal).
4) Habs need a game breaker...Semin could potentially be that. I'd probably roll the dice on him if it made sense. I can't see us being able to land either one of Parise or Suter. I also agree we need to improve our 4th line...Gaustad or Prust would be excellent signings.
5) That's definitely fantasy talk! haha...would love to see the media contained a little better but i doubt that will happen anytime soon.
1) hire roy
2)send gomez to dogs
3)draft yakupov/grig/galchenyuk
4)win
5)profit
5) should be ????
and 6) profit...common knowledge you cant profit without the ????
I would assuming owenership has given me carte blance:
1) Bring in some habs alumn in advisory/assistant type positions
2)hire best coach available
3) Bury Gomez and Kabarle
4) Sign PK Max and Price to long term deals and Emelin to a 2yr
5) Listen for any interesting trade proposals for 1st round draft pick, and if nothing draft BPA
6) Go after Gaustad and Sutter hard at free agency
1. Extend Timmins' contract – and, maybe, reinforce his Quebec scouting department. When everything else is equal, the Canadiens (or any other organisations) should go with the local boy... French or English! Scouting their own back yard have not been Montreal forte since many years.
2. Hire the best available coach with bilingualism as one of the prerequisites. Not "THE" prerequisite... one of them.
4. Change the organisational culture - Stability, Imputability and Passion as the cornerstones. Enough with the former Sens!
5. No buyout... but I would be willing to ship Gomez and a 3rd/4th round pick away for futures considerations! If it does not work (or, if you prefer, if Gainey does not find a new job as someone else GM!), send him to the AHL.

If all this happened, buy some popcorn, because some things pop and some things implode.
1- Hire patrick roy
2- Draft grigorenko
3- Send gomez and Kab to hamilton
4- Offer radulove 5 years at 5.5 million, which will cost our 2013 first second and third
5- Give the world to either weber or suter from nashville
Don't have much to add but I would definitely hire Andy Murray as Head of Professional Scouting. He did a marvelous job when he was here before and the team went into a free fall after he left to coach St. Louis. We need to have smart hockey men from top to bottom.
A marketing campaign putting more pressure than needed on an 18-year-old? This isn't ****ing Columbus. The seats will be sold out regardless and the added pressure is ridiculous. The media will market him enough.
1) Have some beers. I'm working for Molson after all.
2) Have a Guiness, to remove the bad taste in my mouth.
3) Brush my teeth to remove the alcohol scent. I don't want the staff to think that I'm an alcoholic.
4) Take a nap in my office... I'm feeling kind of dizzy right now.
5) Going back home... tough day at work.
1. Get a good coaching staff (by the way i don't like the idea of P.Roy)
2.bury Gomez
3.draft top available forward (ideally Yakupov)...........what!? you never know
4.Get a legit veteran 4th line center (ideally Gaustad), resign Moen+White(RFA), get a decent top9 fwd if our 1st pick isn't ready, get a good solid defensiveD
5. sit back and enjoy a great season

2. Trade Gomez for a 7th, if no team want him I will bury him to Hamilton, try to trade Kaberle and Bourque for the best pick/prospect available... they are tradeable compared to Gomez.
3. Draft the BPA in 1st round, Malcolm Subban in 2nd round if available, keep an eye on QMJHL remaining players to not miss a possible hidden gem and get blamed after... hire more scouts in QMJHL for next season.
4. Hunt for Free agents like Parise and Suter, staying away from Semin (not the kind of player I want on my team) and extend Price, Subban 3-4 years
5. Not rushing the Hamilton newcomers to the NHL (Tinordi, Beaulieu, Bournival, Gallagher...), might even think about not playing the player we picked 1st this draft in the NHL right away. Getting the best hockey teacher-coach and put him in Hamilton to enhance progression faster and better.

Buying out Gomez is a fire-able offense. We can not afford to have Approx 2 million on our cap for the next few years when we could easily send him to the AHAL and have nothing on our cap. The Habs have money, they can afford to burry his salry in the AHL.
lol at bury out Kaberle. At 4,5M$ on a 63M$ cap limit he is overpaid but he's nowhere near a problem for the Habs.
1) Hire the best coach
2) Bury out Gomez
3) Sign PK+ Price long term
4) Let Timmins draft the BPA
5) Find a top 6 winger to play with Plekanec and Gionta ( UFA or trade )
1- Trade Gomez and Kaberle. Because fans cant stand them anymore. And I'm sure I'll find a way to move 'em.
2- Speak with Timmins and scouts about draft day. Tank as much as possible.
3- Start negociation with RFAs and UFAs I want to keep.
4- Make an offer to C.Kelly or P.Gaustad. Make an offer to Jagr. Make an offer to Sutter.
5- Trade Weber or Diaz for a Stay at home D (same age/potential).
6- Hire Patrick Roy with the assistants of his choice.
Pacioretty - DD - Cole
(DRAFTPICK) - Plekanec - Jagr
Bourque - Eller - Gionta
Moen - Kelly/Gaustad - White
Suter - Markov
Gorges - Subban
Emelin - Diaz/Weber
+Stay at home D.
Plekanec and Jagr have chemistry, and I'm sure they'll fit well with Forsberg, Galchenyuk or Grigorenko. And they could remove some pressure off DD's line. Then you have Bourque/Eller/Gionta. Another line that can contribute and score goals. And last line is the Densive line. Kelly or Gaustad could keep pressure off Plekanec.
1) Hire the new coach
2) sign Pac, Subban, Eller, Price, Emelin etc.
3) Draft to best foward available
4) Burry Gomez
5) Look for the best stay at home def available + a big foward
1) Take Gomez on a "fishing trip"
2) Find a mate for Youppi, he looks so lonely. Perhaps Bruce Vilanch could fit the bill.
3) Send Campoli to find Gomez
4) Convince Geoff Molson to only sell Molson 67 @ the ACC.
5) Trade for Nielsen & Bodker. Form the ultra-Dane line, then wait for hilarious jokes from Glen Healy.
1. I would hire the coach that I have the best feeling about after numerous interviews. If a candidates stands out by a lot and does't speak french I would hire him anyways and provide an interpreter to the stupid media. If it is a toss and one of them speaks French I'd hire him.
2. I would ask Timmins what I can do to support him long term in continuing his great work but would ad resources on the team for player development.. I would ask Timmins for as much information as possible on Yakupov, Grigorenko and Galchenyuk and trust him 100% on his judgement. If he thinks Yakupov is slightly better than both others and it is a toss between Grigs and Galch then I take which ever one is available at my pick. If he is pushing a specific pick BY A LOT than I trade up offering assets which can include several of: Weber, Kristo, Palushaj, Avtsin, Enqvist and even one of our second round picks..
3. If there is a free buyout in the new CBA I use it on Gomez and if not I burry him in the minors.. I feel like his horrible performances are so documented that it won't affect our reputation with players in the league.. I was totally against that for the longest time but now it is necessary if Molson approves.
4. I change the direction of our D:
If Markov proves to remain ok until the end of this year, I put Kaberle on the block.. I think people on this board do not realize that he has done much better in Montreal than in Boston or Carolina where he was totally out of shape.. 22 points with the Habs in 41 games (coming in to the worst PP in the league is not bad at all). Granted he is overpaid but if a team desperately needs a PP QB I believe they would take a chance on him based on his improvement in Montreal. I don't think we can get anything substantial in return but I believe we could get a 5th round pick or a depth physical D or F. The only reason why I don't keep him is because I don't believe you can have a winning team with a PP specialist that is horrible 5 on 5 that will be a second PP player.. I would replace him by trading for a LH D with a booming precise shot because this formula has proven to be the one that allows Markov to QB a top 5 PP EVERY YEAR. I do not believe that Subban with Markov is a top 5 PP combination.. I believe it is a top 15 combination and that is not enough for the tabs to improve..
My D would be (in no order and no L or R specification)
Markov, Subban, Emelin, Gorges, Diaz, (LH booming precise shot), PHYSICAL STAY AT HOME D, St-Denis
5. I sign Price and Subban long term
the next thing would be to build a real 4th line and to contemplate options of adding a top 6 F.. I feel like our base is solid.. Just like we weren't a first place team the year we finished 1st in the east, we aren't a last place team right now..
I would surround myself with a quality staff of guys who have WON at the NHL level.
No more time my amateur hour. We want pros. And more than one.
A real amateur scouting staff. Timmons is welcome to stay, even head it.
A real pro scouting staff. Full time guys.
A real European scouting staff.
A coach who can get the best out of the type of players that exist now, not in the 80's.
Pay them all double what they currently get.
Speak with scouting staff at least bi-monthly, coaches, daily.
Set targets that they must meet monthly. Hold them to it.
Trade/bury Weber, Kaberle, Gomez.
Resign Moen and Staubitz.
Draft a center, and cultivate him. If he can play in the NHL, make sure he lives with Gionta, or another veteran. If he plays in Hamilton, make sure he gets top minutes and is closely followed on and off the ice.
