Even if they pick second I can't imagine the Oilers picking Grigorenko.
Agreed, but I wouldn't rule out Galchenyuk with the #2.
Let me preface by saying I still think Murray is the favorite to be drafted by us, but Galchenyuk is a really nice contrast to RNH and gives us a really good 1-2 punch down the middle. In addition, from what we've heard of his character, he would fit in really well with the group we already have.
With this being a deep draft for D-man, the possibility to drafting a #2-3 potential type guy with our 2nd round pick isn't that much of reach.
Interesting times ahead for the draft.

So I was curious about the History of the Draft Lottery and which teams jumped up to win it.. here is the results.
1995 - LA (7th) won the lottery
1996 - Ottawa retained 1st
1997 - Boston retained 1st
1998 - Tampa Bay retained 1st
1999 - Chicago (6th) won the lottery
2000 - NY Islanders (3rd) won the lottery
2001 - Atlanta (3rd) won the lottery
2002 - Florida (3rd) won the lottery
2003 - Florida (4th) won the lottery
2004 - Washington (3rd) won the lottery
2006 - St.Louis retained 1st
2007 - Chicago (5th) won the lottery
2008 - Tampa Bay retained 1st
2009 - NY Islanders retained 1st
2010 - Edmonton retained 1st
2011 - New Jersey (8th) won the lottery
So the 2nd last team has never actually won the lottery. Time for a change?
Playoffs are over for Galchenyuk and Yakupov as Sarnia lost in 6 to Sagnaw.
Nail Yakupov RW 6 2 3 5 -7
Alex Galchenyuk C 6 2 2 4 -6
Not particularly impressive stats for either. I think that playoff result might hurt Galchenyuk a little as some were probably looking (hoping) for a big playoffs from him. I don't know what type of impact that will have on the scouts but I'm sure they would feel more confident in assessing him if he'd have had a longer run in the playoffs after coming off his season long injury.
Galchenyuk could go anywhere from probably 3rd to ~10th.
When Round 2 of the QMJHL playoffs starts the matchup I'll be keeping an eye on is Quebec vs Halifax... Grigorenko vs MacKinnon. Should be an interesting head to head battle to see who steps up the most when the chips are down.

Oh man, if we won the lottery, could you imagine the **** storm that would ensue?
Would be one hell of a top six as we'd be able to effectively seperate our 4 best offensive talents onto two lines and really cause match-up headaches for the first time since the 1980s.
Get that Justin Schultz thing sewn up Tambo, then move Gagner for another young d-man like Ellis or Rundblad or Schenn.
Now you should be set up front and on the back end instead of our slow motion rebuild where we add like one good piece every year and that's it.

That's gonna be awesome. I think MacKinnon will probably win that head to head match up fairly resoundingly though, he just seems a lot better than anyone in this draft with maybe the exception of Yakupov.

I've been drooling over Yakupov all year and have said all along he's the clear #1 in this draft, that said I'd take MacKinnon instantly over Yakupov. I think MacKinnon will be EXTREMELY good. I think he's a player that has another level or two when he turns it on and can carry a team on his back.
That said... next year is a very deep draft and guys like Barkov, Shinkaruk, Monahan and Pulock/Jones are in the mix as well.
When the Oilers get another lotto pick next year there will another tough set of choices to make.
-Sign Schultz June 1st.
-Trade Gagner to Phoenix for Gormley.
-Draft Grigorenko. or Galchenyuk. I don't claim to have a clue who's better. Heck if they really believe Murray or Dumba are heads and shoulders better then draft one of them instead I guess.
I think d-men are really hard to gauge and predict development. Maybe just get a whack of them and hope some blossom hehe
What will probably happen is.
Draft Ryan Murray
The first situation definitely makes for more excitement. Second one you never know may turn out the best. Starting to think Gagner will never really turn into that elite 2nd line center though.

I really think the combine is going to be a deciding factor if we take Grigorenko or not. The Russian factor, rumored bad work ethic etc.. The Oilers will get an idea of how he really is and if he wants to stay here.
I agree that Schultz could be a factor too. But Murray, Schultz, Klefbom, Petry is a helluva future top 4.

Hypothetically though I think I'd rather have this ...
MPS RNH Eberle
Hall Grigorenko Reider
Hartikanen Lander Pitlick

Yup will definately need to get a good batch of truth serum for Grigorenko's interview. I've read so many different things about him I don't know what to believe at all.
-Roy say's he's got a great attitude and work ethic. Can't get him off the ice.
- Scouts say he's lazy when he doesn't have the puck, lacks intensity.
I didn't watch much of Russia at the WJC but wasn't Grigorenko the most effective draft eligible player there?
I heard he didn't speak a lick of English before coming over and is now virtually fluent. I consider that and the fact he's integrating into NA in his draft year pretty impressive.
Perhaps I'm a softie but I think these kids that come over that young must have a certain fortitude to come over and succeed away from family, friends, and culture at such a young age.
-I guess it's up the Edmonton Scouts to determine if his game is just cerebral and smooth (which could make poor scouts call him lazy I think)

Yeah, the first part of your post, what you would do, is like a bizarro-Tambo.
There are question mark surrounding both Grigorenko and Galchenyuk, which means Tambo won't go anywhere near them. Sign Schultz? Yeah, that'll be the day! I'm sure there's a Potter 2.0 that Tambo has been eying for months now.
Even if EDM drafts #2 and MTL #3, you'll still get Grigorenko (which I believe is who your fans want anyway). I just have the feeling that's the way things are going to shake out...

Not for me. I'm still looking forward to Lotto Day. I don't even want to consider the possibility of winning the lottery though, because the idea of stealing Nail is just too hilarious. Not to mention awesome!

Yea that's definitely true. Although we don't really know who we're going to draft this year whereas the past two years it's been pretty obvious. Makes it a little more exciting near the draft IMO.
